BS: ...looks like snow for many

This time the Wash DC area has only a light dusting, and has missed the nastiness that hit Georgia and the Carolinas and is heading for Boston, New York and environs!

You all up there please take care and stay IN.... this stuff is gonna blow & drift..

Thanks, Bill. This will trap us in the camper and delay our yurt building.

I hope everyone else can stay reasonably safe and warm.

It's snowing here. Must be a bad storm - the Pleasant Street Bingo in Lewiston closed.

Normally I would say that this is Maine and we'll deal with it but after Monday night's fiasco (2+ hours commute home that is normally ten minutes) I don't know.

Be safe all.

We're under a blizzard warning, with 12 - 18" predicted. The stuff that's coming down now is powder, and it's blowing around. With any luck, the wind will clean off some places. With a TON of luck, it will blow the snow off the right places. I'm glad I don't have to go anywhere, though, as the roads are going to be difficult.

We're also under a blizzard warning in Somerset county, NJ. We've gotten about 6" of dry snow so far since noon.

As we are not allowed to have bird feeders in our condo, I've been putting out oats and other grains a handful at a time on our porch. Remember, if they can't see it, they can't find it.

12".... 18"? Pfffft. Don't get excited. It's just a snowstorm. If it does get to 18" and it get's really windy, it's a pain. But it's just a snowstorm. It's not a "monster storm". It's not a "weather bomb". I don't get pissed off until it's at least twice as much. On accounta it's what we Canucks call "winter".

Of course, if Pleasant Street Bingo in Lewiston closed, well, that is bad. But, there will be more bingo.

We don't usually worry about blizzards either, gnu. We usually would have plenty of fuel, water, and food.

This one is significant for us. I hope you're correct, and our expectations are not.

Janie... because the birds shit everywhere, especially on laundry on the clothesline, and peck the gravel off the roof shingles and the neighbours that feed the rats with wings get upset when ya shoot the vermin.

I'm just guessing.

Well, m... here, it's expected to be over and done with by tomorrow afternoon, so I hope you have enough supplies to get you through the next 12 to 18 hours.

Or is your weather expected to last longer?

Subject: RE: BS: ...looks like snow for many
From: maeve

Our high winds are to continue well into Tuesday, gnu. We are vulnerable, that's all. It's just our problem.

I'm sure others will find it just another storm, so no worries.

Subject: RE: BS: ...looks like snow for many
From: Jeri

Gnu, I expect their home is fairly light and moves a lot in the wind.
The main problem I've encountered with 18" of snow and high winds is the drifts get way higher. This is mostly a driving hazard, except when they drift onto your mailbox and become camouflage to snow plows.

I have food, water and heat, and since it's cold and the snow isn't the sticky kind, I'll likely not lose power. Not for very long, anyway.

It's a suburban condo development. The guess above is probably accurate. Frankly, most of the time it does not seem to matter as we have deer, vultures and turkeys in the neighborhood. That means that there is plenty of food around for the wilds. When the ground is covered, however, the little ones need some help and the rules are pretty much irrelevant to their needs.

Our forecast is about the same as yours for snow accumulation. the winds were strong enough that Bubba tolerated a sweatshirt going out tonight.

We are already drifting at close to 2 feet and there have been many emergency vehicles on the road tonight. Jersey driver really don't know basic snow etiquette. The storm has stalled is circling in our blizzard warning zone.

but I bought paint for the family room and put the crew to work .... seemed like a good plan when no one could get out of the house. Hopefully photos tomorrow

As the storm has moved north, the same can not be said. Stay sheltered and warm, 'ya'll, and pull on the wooly hats and socks. The itch is worth the body warmth.

It was spitting light stuff when I left work Sunday at 5, but more and bigger flakes as I headed west towards Nottingham. Enough idiots on the road plus decreased visibility from swirling snow that I went straight home without stopping for an errand that wasn't a necessity.

Must be the atmospheric pressure that's causing my knee (whole damned leg!) to just ache despite Rx topical meds, ingested analgesics, etcet etcet.

Bed at 9. Woke up at 11. Woke up at 12:30. Still awake. Raging blizzard out there -- wind howling. I'm here at the computer with an extra shirt thrown over my nightgown and a thick flannel sheet wrapped around my feet, legs and lap. It's pretty damned windy HERE, too!

Tom curmudged when he came to bed. I reminded him: It's the end of December, almost January. This IS New England, you know. Snow and blizzards are what happens in winter in New Hampshuh. (We were lucky last year.) Snow, however, is over rated, I think.

Was joined in my lying in bed wakefulness by a very needy, purring cat. She'll probably be there vibrating and insisting on petting when I return. Wish me luck on getting back to sleep!

How goes the battle?

We got about 6" before it turned to heavy mist mid morn. Wind gusts about 40mph. Snowing again and expecting another 6 to 10". Miserable stuff because it's heavy. Had about 8000 without power in Moncton this morn because the stuff is sticking to everything.

All in all, not much of a storm, unless you listen the news... we are getting slammed by a monster/major/massive storm.

It's been snowing since late in the afternoon yesterday, with no signs of stopping yet. The mail was delivered, the plows have ground by, but very little traffic otherwise. We are still snowed in due to the wind and drifting snow. No idea what the snowfall is so far due to drifting, but I pushed through 2-3 foot drifts to get to the chickens.

In a house with food, with water, with dependable warmth; in a house where there are enough warm clothes and a way to keep them clean; in a house with a connection to the earth, this is your basic Maine winter storm. For us right now it's one more danger, one more barrier. There are many in similar situations. We're fortunate in that we have a chance of emerging into better times.

It's COLD and the snow is blowing around but it's finally stopped, here in southwestern New Hampshire. The wind has blown it around so much that it's hard to judge, but when the pup galumphed off the plowed driveway on to the yard it was up to her shoulders, which are about 14" high. She was very startled and galumphed right back to the driveway! Poor thing, she was born in The Turks, Bahamas and does NOT approve of this weather!

But we are cozy by the fireplace, and like Jeri we have warmth, shelter, water and food, so will fare fine (we still have power, though it's still blowing a gale out there!).

My thoughts go out to all who are not so well off, starting with those who have snowdrifts in the porta-potty!

I can't even tell if it's snowing. The wind is stronger and more persistent than last night. My driveway and car are cleared off, so if I HAVE to get out, I can. I'm not going outside on purpose though.

I've been places with winter-use out-houses, and I remember it was pretty hard to use them while shivering hard. This won't last.

We are listening to the blizzard's big gusts rolling across the hayfield and through our young orchard, before it slams against the front of the camper. It's very like a huge breaker rolling into a bay and crashing against the shore. We can hear each one coming; then the camper shudders when the wind hits it. The wind gusts have been described by a good local weatherman as being comparable to a Category 2 hurricane.

The 3 gallon water container was just knocked from the counter to the floor. The spout end was shoved well in; fortunately, it didn't burst.

Just came back in. The plowboy lads have hit my driveway--two of them, and I shoveled, and shoveled, and... you know. 10 to 18", my ass. It was up to the top of my boots, and that's at least 2'. Maybe it blew in from across the street, I don't know. And then I fell on my ass. (I don't think anybody saw.) You can't carry a shovel with the scoop side facing you, step on the end and keep walking. No way you can do that. Slow motion, semi-padded flop on right side.

I hope that the storms will end soon for those of you who are trying to dig out. We expect to have snow on the ground here six months of the year. Our town has the equipment to deal with it in a timely manner, but we seldom get the magnitude of snowfalls you people in the east are reporting.

It's snowing lightly now. Living in a redneck village has it's perks. We're the only family on our street of about 50 houses that doesn't have a pickup truck or a 4x4 SUV. By the time those vehicles have all passed by on their way to work, the snow is well packed on the road for our low passenger cars to manage.

This photo was taken on Sunday. http://www.flickr.com/photos/diffuse/5341922119/ The snow removal crews clear the roads and create walls with the snow along the roads, in front of the houses.

Nice photo as usual, rags. Looks like Maine and New Hampshire to me. We throw the snow back as far from the road as we can, and we regularly cut down the level of the plow piles along the road, but by the time the "snaws they melt the soonest", we can't see past the snow to get safely out the driveway onto the road.

And our 15 inches is on top of the compressed couple of feet of old snow below today's drifts.

Evidently my previous post got lost in a whiteout!

Here in Richmond< Maine, I find that as fast as I clear the entry walks and driveway, the wind fills them in. We've got about a foot and a half of light fluffy stuff blowing around. The person who plows our driveway was about half an hour late. So I and the resident tenant spent the extra time meditating in our cars. Then Judy showed up from work (they let her out two hours early) and decided to park out front rather than trying to jump the snowbank with her Camry. When the plow did show up everything worked out well. He plowed an escape route for our embedded cars and we sped out and then he cleared the whole driveway. Probably by tomorrow morning it will be filled in again.

The resident cats are not amused. "Where is that door that opens to spring?"

Nova Scotia was supposed to get the same storm as New Ebgland. As it looks now, they must have taken most of the snow out of the system? We only received about 1 inch so far (started at 3 pm), and the night is now...It looks like it may rain? Thanks for taking the hit eastern USA.

You may be correct, Ed T. We ended up with 20 inches on top of the old snow.

I went out with a yardstick this morning. Relatively level, unobstructed area: 14" (in several different spots), blown up next to plow leavings, but not actual plow poo: 28". I actually hated messing up the pristine snow with my feet, but I had to know. Took a couple photos, then went to the gym. Epiphanized that if one had shoveled a significant amount of snow the day before, one might not enjoy the gym quite as much as if one's muscles weren't considering defecting to a sedentary 90-year old in Boca Raton.

Could have sworn that I've posted twice on this thread. Maybe the snow covered my post!

We got about a foot and a half of light fluffy stuff.

Looks real pretty but it tends to blow around and fill in as fast as one can shovel!

All joking aside I hope it does ease up for you. For some reason we have not had any of this past week's weather that you folks have been experiencing. It has literally gone around us. I certainly don't mine, but hay!. February and march can be bitches and we may end up with lots of the white stuff. It is not the white stuff that bothers me about winter. Lots of it against your house is actually a good insulator. What I don't like is when it gets around 25/35 Celsius. I forget what that is in Fahrenheit.

-7F/-22C outside this morning. Inside, we have a heat wave of 35F/2C.

The entire perimeter of the camper is now banked with snow, thanks to Truelove and the most recent blizzard. I cringe to think what our inside temperature would be without that protection.

The stars are glorious.

We have an additional 6 inches of snow from yesterday's storm, with 8-12 inches of snow expected to fall tonight and tomorrow. It's becoming hard to see over the banks.

Sunday into Monday we are looking at temperatures dropping to -18 to -20F (-28 to -29C.)

When I was a lad, Mum let me stay home from svhool when it was -20F or below. Still, there were many days that the wind blew so hard that my forehead would be so cold that I had a headache by the time I was a hundred yards from the house. Maybe that's why my brain doesn't work well anymore.

In the camp described in Solzhenitsin's "One Day...", IIRC, the prisoners did not have to work if the temperature was below -40 (F or C), but they had to make it up the following Sunday.

We're up to our ears in the white fluffy stuff today here in Maine. We cancelled this evening's Coffee House at the Sidedoor.

Judy got to work after driving through the early morning snow but she's just learned that they're closing her office at 3 pm. Of course I'm not planning to have the driveway plowed until 4 pm which could leave her grinding gears out front.

Got to love this white fluffy stuff!

Got to send another box full to Brett in Guam.

Parking lot's just been plowed and I've re-shoveled the walks. Judy got back minutes after the plow truck left. So we're all hunkered down, Judy with a glass of wine and I with a bottle of beer.

There's about a foot of new snow out there. Not much more coming down but a lot blowing around.

The cats are not happy.

*sigh*...look's like it's our turn in the Wash DC area... they are predicting 5-10" of heavy, wet stuff tonight. It likely won't last for weeks, as it's barely at freezing, but it will be a MESS. Glad I went to the store yesterday.

Wiener dogs have difficulty in heavy snow, but if they're young and active they will charge out into it and do the "submarine" routine, vanishing under the surface and burrowing forward. you can spot their position by the "periscope" (raised tail). It's quite dramatic when they suddenly surface, and I usually yell "Thar she blows!!!" to encourage them to even more heroic endeavours.

Old Dachshunds, however, regard heavy snow with loathing, respond with weary sighs and groans when you try to shove them outside, and look for a chance to pee on the rug instead.

It is snowing...and it is heavy...and it is nasty. I can deal with that, but this is the kind of glop that breaks limbs and knocks down wires....and I can't shovel in heat. 3-4" so far, and worst to come.

Just got in from shoveling ... we got 19 inches last night. and unusually for New Jersey nothing is melting !!

The banks on the sides of the driveway are now over my head.

Bubba went out this morning to shoulder high new snow and was not amused. His old man hips are now requiring that we shovel an area out, because if the gets too big a chill he has difficulty getting back up the stairs.

They are saying snow showers the next two days and a clipper headed our way with 1 to as much as 6 inches on Tuesday....

I've had enough.

We have over a foot... started around 6AM and it's 4:45 now. Just a few more inches to come. The wind is the worst part of it. Snow off a bear's back for me but I did have to go sit with Mum for an hour when it was at it's worst as she gets nervous. She remembers the REAL storms of years ago (3+ days of this) and does not believe I can watch the storm in almost real time on the internut radar sites.

Sheet fire!!!

9-10 inches, a half mile long drive way that goes straight up one way and straight down another and so yesterday afternoon about 4;00 pm with about 4 inches on the ground and comin' down fast I decided I'd drive the Kabota down to the mailbox... Only problem was that I found it to have a flat right front tire???

"This ain't good" I was thinkin' so I cranked the tractor up and used the bucket to life the front tires off the floor of the equipment shed, they it in the back of mt Toyota 4WD truck and headed down to Reed's tire, got there okey, got a new tube and headed back dodgin' three stuck folks on the side of Pine Grove Holler Road but kept movin' until turnin' in my drive way (straight up) and just laid into her and we fishtailed all the way up the 1/2 mile long driveway, used the ehadlights on the truck to find all the lug nuts and got the tire back on just in time for Beer O'Clock...

Spent 4 hours this morning plowing and pushing snow but the driveway is passable long as you ain't an a Chevy Impala 'er a pickup truck without 4 WD...

Grrrrrrrrr... I hate snow... I hate it, I hate it, I hate it!!!

I hate the damn stuff too. With a passion. Do you realize that we never got snow at all back in the "old country" (West Central Africa)? Never! Hell, you have to go climb to the top of Kilimanjaro to find any snow, fer Chrissake! The worst thing about livin' in the Land of the Free, the good ol' USA, is this goddam white shit that comes down out of the sky every winter. It gets in yer face, it gets down the back of yer neck, it gets on yer shoes and on yer hat, it gets tracked inside. It turns to ice and makes drivin' real hazardous. Old people slip on it and get their hips broke. There is nothin' good whatsoever to say about snow, and it oughta be made illegal. That is one of the first things I am gonna look into after I am elected in 2012.

Snow ain't shit. It's the wind what messes shit up. We only got about 14" of snow. That ain't shit. But the wind piled over four feet of that snow on Mum's walkway three times today... that's shit for a nearly 54 year old man with a bad back, bad knees, arthritis and a bad attitude. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Better'n earthquakes, hurricanes and stupidcide bombers though. I guess I am just lucky to live in God's Country.

But never mind '54 and bad back and arthritis and gout and cooties... Let's get down the the real deal...

Chongz, while he ain't exactly presidential material, has it nailed: snow sucks!!! I mean, it's alot like fallin in the sewage treatment plant... It gets all over you... It sucks... And here the kicker... Ya' know they used to tell ya' that white meant pure and all that... They lied and they knew they were liein'... They just wanted to see this white shit all over you like it had been all over them... Kinda like miserable parents telling the newly weds to have some kids... I mean, misery loves company...

Snow sucks... If you could package it up as a vacuum cleaner it would wipe out the entire industry... That's how bad (good) it sucks... I mean, it would not only take up the carpet and the floor but about 10 feet of dirt under the house...

Snow sucks...

I SAID it was nasty... we had hundreds of thousands in this area without power, and some will be off until the weekend. I had 'only' 23½ hrs. of dark & cold. Fortunately, I am on a fairly well-maintained street that gets plowed early, but 8" of heavy is hard to shovel.
I still feel lucky compared to you folks in Jersey, Delaware, N. York, Maine...etc...etc.... I think we all need a break. Let's protest and march to...ummmm... hmmm? Oh, too deep to march? Well, let's all sing "Sumer ist incomin in"
