The Claque blends four voices of depth & maturity with serious folk pedigrees: Tom Addison, Barry Lister, Dave Lowry & Sean O'Shea. All have been in one or more of the legendary groups The Songwainers, Hollinmor & Isca Fayre. They sing mainly traditional songs in rich, striking, inventive harmonies which vary from sweet & solemn through bright & cheery to dark & dangerous.

Tom, Barry & Sean are also distinguished & well-informed solo singers of ballads. Barry's solo CD Ghosts & Greasepaint features several classics. (Unfortunately Dave cannot be with us on this occasion.) In the forum they will sing & discuss some of their choice.

You are invited to bring at least one traditional ballad to sing & talk about. To avoid clashes with other contributors, please state your preferred ballad in advance. If your choice has already been taken we will let you know so that you can choose another. If in doubt about what counts as a ballad, please use the contact email or phone to ask.

Vic, I don't know where you found that secret message, but our cryptography department has conceived the suspicion that this might be from Russia (KGB? Putin?), translating something like "I am looking forward to a long-term cooperation with you. Thanks in advance for your letter of terms and conditions."

We are still investigating. CIA

Jackie Oates described The Claque as the boy band from whom she'd collected one of the songs she sang at Haddenham last Saturday...!

Hmmm ... sounds as though she's using that line a fair bit - she used it in Guildford on Friday, and I think I had heard it once before ! :-)

Jackie also said at Arundel Folk Club last week that 'Sean O'Shea passes her all his girlie songs' and then did Here's A Letter to You, Madam, which I hadn't heard since my student days in London. Delightful.

Well, as long as it's not up and crowing while we eat, I suppose? Re Richie's Lady - I've been singing that one myself since the 70's but haven't yet sung it in public. About time, Ireckon (I've got a verse that Jackie hasn't ...)

My cheque is in the post (and I've sent you an email about it!)

I love Richie's Lady on Jackie's album THE VIOLET HOUR.
When Sean O'Shea joins her on the last half of the song,my knees tingle. He is such a lovely singer.

Tingling knees guaranteed on 9th. April, then. I heard Sean do a superb and very unusual ballad at Chippenham Festival last year; possibly a variant on Prince Robert, but with an Irish female name as the title. It was stunning.

The list of ballads is now:

The Great Silkie of Sule Skerry
The Carnal and the Crane
The Outlandish Knight

I have just noticed the label on a bottle of Lea & Perrin's Worcester Sauce which says 'Brings Food to Life!'

This could explain what happened to King Herod's roast chicken, as told in The Carnal and The Crane.

Valmai -- a great list and the promise of a great day! Wish it wasn't hundreds of miles away, or I'd be down at the toot.
Hope you'll report back, if it's not too much trouble.

Thanks, Anne! I will do my best; it may be necessary to start a new thread after the event as this one has been attracting a lot of spam.

Here's a link to the Claque performing the hunting song Me Brave Boys. The sound quality isn't great, but you get a feel of the energy and power of the harmonies.
