Obit: Actor Pete Postlethwaite (1946 – 2011)

Actor Pete Postlethwaite has died aged 64. He passed away peacefully in hospital in Shropshire yesterday following a lengthy battle against cancer.

Born in Warrington, he had originally planned to be a priest. He later became a teacher but eventually followed his passion for the stage, beginning his career at the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool.

Rest in Peace

One of the best we had. From Sharpe to The Usual Suspects to Brassed off et al.
RIP Mr. P

I admired him as an actor and as a man.

I've always admired Pete Postlethwaite - the phrase ' a lived-in face' could have been invented for him. What a shame that he's gone from us.

Great actor and advert for the 'better' end of British actors.

I'll miss his 'lived-in' face.

RIP Pete and thanks for all your great films

His potrayal of the dying brass band conductor, in Brassed Off, actually managed to change the minds of several politicians of the time about coal field regeneration projects. Anyone who has seen his speech at the Albert Hall, at the end of that film, could not but be moved by the whole sentiment of what he said and did.

Sadly I missed the opportunity of seeing him play Prospero in Shakespeare's "Tempest" in Manchester a couple of years ago. I now will always regret not having seen him in live theatre.

One film that has not been mentioned, thus far, here is "In the Name of the Father", about the Guildford Four, where he played the part of Giuseppe Conlon.

There was something about his style of acting that was faciniating. His intensity and loyalty to a part gave his performance something of an edge I always found.

A sad loss to his Family of course but also to theatre and a public who revered him. The flag should be at half mast in Warrington today... they have lost a rather special son

May he rest in peace, though I suspect if heaven has a theatre he will be treading the boards again soon enough. Can you imagine him meeting with Shakespeare? No doubt there would be great mutuality of respect between them.

Yet another of my favourites gone. I, too, admired his acting ability - if he was in the cast of a film I reckoned it was worth watching.

RIP Pete.

He came to prominence after I had left the UK. I did get to see his fine performance in "Brassed Off". He was obviously a fine actor and a good bloke.

Not one on my radar for some reason, at least not a name with the face. I'll look back and see what he was in and I'm sure there will be an "aha!" moment. His IMDb page.

They're replaying an interview with him on Fresh Air (NPR in the US) today.

When he was young he taught for a while in the late 1960s at my old school in Manchester. When I found out, I was gutted rhat I'd missed him, as I moved away from there aged 14, just a few years before he came!

One of my daughter's friends has posted on FB that she is so glad now that, while she was at drama school, she snuck off from her own work to watch him rehearse at the Royal Exchange in Manchester a few years ago.

It's a huge loss.

Sad news indeed. I often thought that in another ten or fifteen years it would be a real privilege to see his version of King Lear -he was a mesmerising actor.

I watched him a few weeks ago in Ben Affleck's film "The Town". He played a great part in it. Sadly it was clear to see he wasn't in health.

Here's a link to the NPR/Fresh Air obituary and 1997 interview.

He was a wonderful and versatile actor -- the last thing I saw him in was Rat.

Very sad.

If his name was on a cast list you knew the production/film/play was worth watching, if only for his performance.

Very sad and a great loss, for me his name on the cast list was always the deciding factor to go and see a film. He is irreplaceable.

RIP Pete. Sadly the great ones are gradually going. What amazes me is the number of film actors and actresses who have died of cancer. There must be some hazard in filming.

Ironically, one of his last film performances ("Inception") was to die in a hospital bed... RIP.

I remember him in a TV series about a Robin Hood bar in Nottingham, run on the lines of Nick's bar in Casablanca...

Very sad loss to stage and screen.
