We are planning a really long-haul flight soon and I wanted to replace both of my 'Walkman'-type CD players which have gone u/s. I thought I'd get one in 'Duty Free' at T5 Heathrow - but NO - "there's no call for them now" - I was told. Then over the weekend I tried the full length of Tottenham Court Road including the Sony Centre, and places like John Lewis, HMV, Maplins, Dixons, Currys, etc. But No - "they don't make them any more" I was told every time I asked. So I said "look - HMV are FULL of CDs of all types of music etc., how do I transfer any CDs I buy onto an MP3 player." "Er with a CD player I guess - but we don't sell them any more." All I could find were boom-buster CD / MP3 music centres - 100 times the size of a Walkman. There's no way I'd even be allowed on an aircraft with one of those. So guys and guyesses - folk singers, musicians and storytellers - oh and indeed archivists - beware that CDs (or players) like the proverbial Monty Python parrot - are gone, deceased, exist no more. As a corollary I ask what's the point in financing, recording and trying to sell a CD any more if the customers can't play them? |

If you are flying you set your phone to flightmode and you can listen to all your music in flight. Who wants a CD player anymore, smartphones or Iphones are the way forward. The iTunes software, which you are pretty much forced to use if you want to sync music onto your iPod, will convert Windows Media .wma files to the iTunes .aac format on the fly when you import the Windows Media files into iTunes. I don't use Realplayer files myself but understand that they, too, are converted on the fly. Mp3 files are understood natively by iPods and iTunes. Great rant by Charlie Booker about iTunes etc. in the Guardian yesterday, Apple zealots should look away now. |

Unless you have Senuti software, there's no way of retrieving your music from an iPod and putting it back on your (say) Apple Mac Book. Senuti is a convenient way of transferring from iPod to Mac - but why can't iTunes simply allow it in the first place? Anyway, CDs and vinyl are still being produced and are still playable. Books are being printed in greater quantities than ever (in the UK, at any rate) and the jolly old Kindle is also taking off. I shall buy a Kindle when I can take it into a charity shop and upload a s/h book for 50p... Mind you, if you're on holiday in some exotic place for a fortnight or so, I suppose a Kindle saves weight. |

I saw an elderly woman buying 3 VHS tapes in the CVS drugstore yesterday. I myself was buying CDs on which to burn, and next to them were audio cassette tapes. They sell CD player walkmans and other kinds of cheap electronics. Their headphones are usually better (at least on a cost versus quality basis) than, say, at RadioShack. Now, what I am in the market for (if I had money) is a CD turntable. These are full-feature CD players that can be manipulated similarly to a phonograph. You touch the surface, like a DJ would touch a record, to spin it forward or back, adjust pitch, etc. Good ones can also be used to manipulate mp3 off a flash drive in the same way. |

It was great because it read CD RW discs, but after dropping it one day it would not close properly and was therefore useless. The volume was also insufficient for use in a plane - even though I have 112db headphones. Then I discovered the Sansa Clip music player, which reads FLAC lossless files as well as the usual mp3 and other lossy formats. I mostly listen to downloaded live music in FLAC format so for stuff that I am going to listen to on a plane, I use Adobe Audition to increase the volume of the music as high as possible - this can also be done in Audacity which is freeware. I also boost all frequency bands to maximum on the Sansa Clip equaliser which gives enough volume to be heard above the usual in flight noise. My Sansa Clip holds 8gb but I believe the latest model has a slot for a memory card. |

Miskin Man - you didn't mention the artefacts induced by noise - recordings from (say) cassette or anything via the microphone input of your PC will beat with the music and generally muddy the waters - particularly nearing the 22.05KHz Nyquist frequency and to a lesser degree the sub-multiples thereof. But as I always say to people who are nerdy about oxygen free copper and all that twaddle. "How near the road are you, how many adjoining domiciles have you, and how tolerant and church mousey is your partner". That's before we mention cars and road noise. And volume - AND THAT'S ANOTHER THING! Z ro content is zero quality. |

IT and media gurus have been predicting the death of the book for over 20 years, and we're printing more than ever, even with the growing popularity of the Kindle and Sony Reader devices. There was the same certainty about the death of vinyl - a medium which has never gone away - on which some artists are now doing simultaneous CD/download/vinyl releases. The CD itself is not as visually or tactilely as pleasant to look at and handle as a vinyl album, but it's certainly more marketable than a flash drive. |

From: Gurney Currently I'm using a DVD player deck as a CD player deck, because dedicated CD players are very expensive here. Not all DVD players will do CDs, though. Cheap ones often do. I have two MP3 player 'walkman' things, though like Kendal I'm not delighted with the quality. I can plug them into the lounge Amp, which makes them louder, but not higher quality. OK if you are not 'listening,' though. Recorded/converted from CDs on the computer. If you are going to buy one, look to the batteries. One of mine takes replaceables, the other charges through a USB port. Flying Auckland to London means 24hrs away from a mains supply. The car radio is new (The old one died) and it also plays MP3s/CDs/CDRs, and I'm playing CDRs of MP3s on that, copies of my disk-backup MP3s that are on the MP3 players. Recorded using Nero as Data, because you seem to get more tracks on that way. I am also turning my LPs into CDRs, but slowly, it is a tedious process. I'm not delighted about the longevity of CDRs, though, and have them backed up twice. It is all possible, even by me. |

As a matter of fact that's the way I usually listen to music, and I like the liner notes, booklets etc. that come with them. I also appreciate the fact that a CD is usually put together with a lot of thought about track placement, varying tempos, keys, etc. which is why I rarely use the "shuffle" feature (although I do use "repeat" sometimes when I want to listen to a favorite song over and over so I can appreciate all the nuances). But the younger folks are not buying them, and more and more music is being downloaded and listened to on MP3 players or similar devices that are even more portable. I do think that this trend is the way it's going - like it or not, just as newspapers are going to be replaced by digital news. I don't necessarily like the trend, mind you! This is just anecdotal, and with the limited sales of my CD probably doesn't indicate much, but I have a CD available on CD Baby. I recently got the rare announcement that somebody had ordered one of my CDs, and I'd reached the magic amount (over $25) and they'd send me a payment. I looked at the accounting and there was the CD sale, along with a lot of downloads for which I received anywhere between $.69 and $.03 each. I've done a lot of (legal) downloading too, and the advantage is I can download only the song I want for my $.99. I've often in the past purchased entire CDs because I really wanted one or two songs. Of course, I often discovered that there were I lot of other songs on the CD that I liked also, and wouldn't have even known about if I hadn't bought it. The young guys at the office definitely think of CDs as outmoded technology. They download and listen on their ipods. |

No Alia Vox, Harmonia Mundi, etc. for download. My library of cds continues to grow. Excellent sound equipment is available, and I have recently bought new speaker systems. Downloaded material is poor in frequency range, but I suppose OK for popular and folk music (also have a fair collection of the latter on cd). Some excellent re-mastered old jazz albums being issued on cds. "The young guys at the office ...." New iphones and such have excellent frequency response, but I prefer to listen comfortably ensconced in my body-friendly armchair, across the room from the best speakers that I can afford. |

From: Genie Methinks there will always be a market for gizmos that allow us out-of-the-loop "oldsters" to convert our 'archaic' technology (vinyl, cassette, CD) to the newest flavor-of-the-month. CDs may not have the fidelity of vinyl or even of tape, but they take up very little space & aren't as vulnerable to damage. I imagine it will be a while before our CDs are really obsolete. That said, I welcome the ability to buy individual songs when all you really want off an album is a few tracks. And I'm really glad my procrastinator tendencies have resulted in my still having most of my vinyl. |

We've had three in our house and all three bit the dust fairly swiftly for assorted reasons. But the CD format itself is great. Stick a good CD in a good player, turn on a good amplifier and sit in front of good speakers and you have the recipe for good listening. I suppose if you pay thousands you can get equivalent results from vinyl, but there is always the cat fur/inebriated friend/senior moment which will ruin a vinyl disc. Tape - oh my God. Reel to reel is OK but cassette was always an unreliable joke unless you owned a Nakamichi. Downloads, what a great trick by Apple etc - they sell you a piece of music compressed to within an inch of its life, with no need to spend their money on sleeeve notes, cases, pictures etc. Then a manufacturer can sell you an iPod dock to make an inadequate product sound spuriously "better". Yes I know you can buy less compressed tracks but they still aren't of CD quality. Bah, humbug. |

I copied cassettes and vinyl onto this medium 10 years ago, and have stuck with it. I can't be bothered to re-copy to CD, and the audio quality's not noticeably worse, certainly it's as good as the originals and it's definitely better than mp3. But I'm having to look out for a couple of spare MD decks, against the eventual but ultimately inevitable time when the present ones expire - fortunately there's no shortage of 'em on e-Bay. |

From: treewind I was a huge supporter of minidisc in its day, but when your last MD player finally bites the dust and you find there's no replacement available, you'd better have a backup on some other medium! A second hand MD player off eBay is all very well, but it will be used and still have a limited life. "definitely better than mp3" Standard MD is 292k bits/second, LP mode is 132k, LP4 is 66k. MP3 has standard rates including 64k, 128k, 160k, 192k, 156k and 320k If you compare the two at similar rates, you'll find less difference. The basic compression method is the same, though not identical. If I ever get around to digitizing or copying my recorded music collection, it will be to hard disk. When storage technology changes (from IDE to SATA, or from HD to SSD) I'll get a new drive and copy it all. |

My older daughter's friend's band, for instance, who get a fair bit of Radio 1 airplay, released their last 3 singles on vinyl, with a single-use download key coming with the record. My younger daughter got me Arcade Fire's latest album "The Suburbs" for Christmas, which came as either just download, a CD with download code or a 12 inch vinyl record with download code. My kids all specified quality tunrtables as being the prime consideration when they were getting music systems! They use iPods, of course, for evryday "background" but when listening seriously they use vinyl or CD, as do most of their friends. |

From: GUEST,Patsy I still like to buy CDs for the booklet, cover and background info, I remember complaints when vinyl was coming to an end that the 'new' CD covers disappointingly didn't show the artwork so well as on the sleeve of an album. The reduction in the sale of vinyl in main record shops was no surprise but despite the downloading reducing sales my guess is that the people who are more likely to browse along the aisles of the record shops are going to be of a certain age and those who like to take their time to make a selection especially on a chilled Sunday afternoon. My son used to download music for me and he has made a good compilation of most things that I've wanted which has been great but there is no way that I am going to get a laptop or pc just to store music. |

From: Q (Frank Staplin) I have a fairly good JVC turntable for my old lps, well weighted and strobe- an oldie I got for $10 at a goodwill store- and have looked at some of the fancy turntables, but not all that interested. The old lps are not tops in shape (many bought used at goodwill and used lp specialists). The classic material is not being put on vinyl anyhow. BBC Music Magazine this month has an article on Allegri and some other great composers of choral music. Only on cd. I will re-listen tonight to those I have. The same issue reviews over 100 new cds. I will probably buy a couple. |

From: GUEST,glueman As a chronically late adopter I have maybe fifteen pre-recorded CDs, most of which came stuck to magazine covers. However I'm beginning to warm to them in their death throes and have begun putting music onto CD. Mini DVDs are another short-lived format I've recently discovered, the cameras to take them are available for buttons and provide perfectly good reproduction. Unfortunately everyone is catching onto film cameras again and the price is rising - I never stopped using the stuff. Ditto cassette tape. Big supermarket chains like Tesco are good for buying tape, CD, mini DVD and so. I recently bought a digital camera, mainly for its film capability I still use older formats alongside. There was a radio programme last year on the revival of analogue cassette tape in experimental music. |

Assuming sales figures continue on their current trajectory, CDs will constitute less than 50% of music sales within 4 or 5 years, and will have gone the way of the cassette within a decade. Of course, there is probably a point at which the decline of CD sales will plateau (at least until all the people who grew up buying CDs have died). Equally, while vinyl sales are going up, it's from a miniscule floor to a very very low ceiling (when compared to downloads, paid-for or otherwise). |
