2011 illness: McGrath of Harlow

08 Jan 11 - 07:45 AM (#3069748)
Subject: McGrath of Harlow: message from his son
From: McGrath of Harlow

My Dad's asked me to post this as he is presently unable to get to a computer.

On December 19 he suffered a cardiac arrest after quite a long walk through the snow. Initially, two first aiders gave him CPR before the arrival of the paramedics. He was admitted to hospital and resuscitated for forty minutes.

Eventually he was transferred to intensive care, where he remained for three days. For much of this period he was sedated and on life support.

Since then he seems to be making a good recovery. My mother and I visit him every day and he's fairly jolly given what has happened to him. He has written two letters to the The Guardian newspaper and has made friends with his fellow patients.

It's been a pretty grim Christmas but he wanted to let everyone on here know what's been going on and has vowed to get back to posting as soon as possible.

Ciaran

Best wishes to your Dad, Ciaran: that is some tribute to the medical services, and hope he continues to make good progress.
I am sure many of us have enjoyed his postings on here, even if we didn't always agree with him! I must have met him at Sidmouth too.

Thank you very much for letting us know, Ciaran. Please tell your dad there are many Mudcat friends who will be watching for updates. If he would enjoy hearing from us in the form of cards, you could either send that information to one of his close friends here by using the PM link that will show next to their names (and those who want to send a card could contact that designated person), or if it is appropriate you could post an address here when he's ready for that.

I look forward to hearing of your progress and improved health, McGrath. I enjoy your posts.

Thanks for posting Ciaran. Kevin McGrath is one of the reasons why I got interested in Mudcat in the first place. I have always enjoyed his humane, dignified responses to threads here - and on occasion been cracked up by his subtlety and wit. Get well soon Kevin. We look forward to having you back.

And I raised my eyes in anguish, called to heaven for some sign,
for some hint that there's a meaning in this world in which we pine.
And a voice from heaven answered, saying "The Master has a Plan -
.....the Bovril's with the Gravy, but the Marmite's with the Jam,
.....the Bovril's with the Gravy, but the Marmite's with the Jam."

Says it so much better than I ever could

From Anne (Mrs McG of H)

Thanks to everyone for all the kind wishes.

Yesterday evening I printed the first forty messages and took them to Kevin. I'll take the rest this afternoon. He was delighted to be in contact with the Mudcat again and has written a reply which I'll collect this afternoon.

He continues to make good progress and expects to have some further tests on his heart next week. Meanwhile (despite having rather bad asthma at present) he seems to be gathering material for songs - the ward is full of small adventures.

Soon after leaving Intensive Care, Kevin experienced wild hallucinations. (The outreach nurse from the ICU explained that these were not uncommon among their patients.) Kevin (typically) rather enjoyed these - and was happy to inhabit an alternative universe. He could project imaginary films onto the wall opposite his bed and got very absorbed in them. He watched his own version of the sinking of the Titanic and the coronation of an English monarch - though he can't remember which.

For a while his perceptions were heightened. He asked me to read The Hobbit to him, but he found it much too exciting and I had to stop. My suggestion that we try The Little House on the Prairie was rejected.

Gradually the hallucinations came to an end and Kevin perhaps a little reluctantly returned to the real world - though not without some discussion on the meaning of "real". All the language skills returned to normal, which was an immense relief.

I'm going to ask today if he is allowed to have his laptop in the hospital. If so, he'll soon be posting himself.

With good wishes to all the Mudcat friends,

Anne

Kevin McGrath is one of those Mudcatters that when I think of him, it startles me to realize that we've never met. He is such a real presence everywhere hs shows up. Glad to hear that he is recuperating nicely.

Kevin, at one point my mother 'suffered' hallucinations- actually, she didn't suffer at all, she enjoyed them hugely.

One day she told my brother that her bed was floating on a lake and it was very pretty. He said, Hey, Mom, you know, don't you, that you are lying in bed in your bedroom, don't you?

She shook her head. Scooping her hand and arm over the edge of the bed, she flung imaginary water all around. Ask 'Ebbie', she said. I splashed her!

Kevin has now had some tests on his heart. He'll be having an angiogram some time this week.

Here is a message from him:

Thanks for all the messages of support. The Mudcat really is a fantastic place to hang out in. And I always love the different ways we express that kind of thing round the world.

Everybody needs to learn how to do CPR. If I'd gone down five minutes before, by the side of the road, I'd have had it. As it is I'd just arrived at our church for Mass and there were people who knew what to do. Stained glass and all, good place to go, but a better place not to go. I don't know if the people working on me sang "Nellie the Elephant" which is the approved song in this country for keeping the rhythm of the compressions. I gather that Americans use "Staying Alive", but that's a bit literal I feel.

I'll be in touch again. I can't use a laptop in here.

KEVIN! and family...

Been away from the Mcat a few... well, what a shock mate!!!

Look here Kev... START TAKING CARE OF YERSELF!!!!!!!!!

Eat those crispy veggies! Take the skin of the chicken... get in training for the best sport of all... a good long life.

I say this, overweight - high blood pressure and a ton of dayly stress working seven days a week on often three hours of sleep... but, hell man, what do I work like the devil for, if not for a world with great fellows like you, Kevin in it.

Here is an idea for a thread... let's take a handful of the best and least health of us... and start a mudcat challenge... encouragement to live healthy and long - keep the music going. You and Spaw, and ... weellll, before I go on must check in on a few I worry about... and offer encouragement, team McGrath, team Spaw... let's see which of you can beat the other to cheat the grim fellow...

There are things you need to do, ol' friend... get well and fit to come to NYC for the opening of my pub, for example, when the State Liquor Athourity decides to love me...

Well, stick some carrots, parsley, raw garlic, tomato and a few lovely spices in the blender, and go out for an accompanied briskish walk soon, dear fellow... you are in training to be the host of thy hunderth birthday.

Get well, stay well... make music and keep making us all happy.
Love to thee and thine (Lucky to have you...)
Thy friend and Friend

From Anne

Kevin's finding it difficult to cope with his stone age hospital computer so I'm writing for him.

The tests he's had on his heart to date look ok. Tomorrow morning he's going to have an angiogram. I spoke to his doctor today. He told me that it's perfectly possible for cardiac arrest to be caused by external circumstances such as exertion and extreme cold and that cardiac arrest does not necessarily damage the heart. So I'm waiting in hope.

Perhaps he'll be home soon. He misses the cats.

Thanks to everyone for the kind wishes. Kevin has loved reading all the posts.

After hours of waiting, Kevin had the angiogram. It showed that he has some clogged arteries and is going to need bypass surgery. Tonight he's been moved (after more than three weeks in a general ward) to the cardiac ward, where to his delight he has a private room with his own bathroom.

I don't know how long he'll remain here, because the intention is that he should have surgery at the cardiac centre for this area, which is in Basildon. We're glad that things have started to move, though it's good that he's had time to get stronger before having an operation.

We hope to speak to his doctor tomorrow to find out in more detail what is wrong and what the surgery will involve.

Kevin would be glad to hear from anyone who's had bypass surgery.

There is a recent thread, started by C-flat, just prior to his own bypass surgery to which a number of veterans of the procedure posted.

While it is likely at some of those folks will see the inquiry and respond either here or via pm, Kevin could also check out the thread and pm C-flat and others who are veterans of the procedure.

Still sending good mojo.

Hi Kevin and Anne

Kendall had bypass surgery in early 2004 and now has no problems at all. His was a three way bypass - his brother had a five way bypass a couple of years later and, again, that solved the problem.

I'm so glad that the problem has been found and that Kevin will be getting the proper treatment in due course.

Good thoughts still coming from Maine.

From Anne

A big thankyou to everyone for all the support and kindness.

Yesterday we met the ward manager for the cardiac unit here and were given more detailed information. Kevin will stay in this ward for another week so that further tests can be carried out. At the start of the following week he'll go to the cardiothoracic centre in Basildon. He needs triple bypass surgery (so not as bad as Bill D's doctor!). After two days he'll have the operation and should come straight home within five days to a week, which seems rather soon though there'll still be lots of support. We have a named cardiac rehabilitation nurse and can contact her whenever we want to.

Ciaran took Kevin's guitar to the ward - which really pleased him. He's reading Alexander McCall-Smith's Mma Ramotswe books again and also The Complete Nigel Molesworth. Wonderful stuff!

Kevin misses the Mudcat very much.

Here on the clunky bedside machine again. it has a will of its own and it doesnt like me much.

Thanks everyone for this thread. A sense of solidarity is what you need in any crisis and that is what this has given me and Anne and Ciaran.

15 January: After HALO jumping into Afghanistan (had to pop the 'chute 10 feet above ground) I proceeded to gather the intelligence I was sent in to get. Had to fight my way out through hordes of angry Taliban using nought but my bare hands, but that was nothing unusual. Kevin, old friend never met, you gave me a fright! As I am working on a building project (barn style building to house my woodshop downstairs and music den upstairs) my computer time comes in snippets and I missed this. Over the many years that I have loved this place, your posts have had much to do with that. Lord knows we have debated some issues mightily, but you (unlike me, at times) have always demonstrated that you are a gentleman and a gentle man. I cannot imagine our cyber village without you in it, so please take good care and tip the medical staff well!!

Though the circumstances are not pleasant, still what a delight it is to hear from Anne and Ciaran! I can "hear" in their posts their love for you and the vibrancy of your family. You are a lucky man, Kevin McGrath. I hope we can all sing together one day.

All the best,

Kevin is going to the Cardiothoracic Centre on Sunday afternoon and will have the operation on Tuesday. I'll be staying in a hotel nearby with friends.

Meanwhile, he is re-reading the Mma Ramotswe books. I've just bought him the latest - The Double Comfort Safari Club. Mma Ramotswe is a comforting person to have around.

Yesterday one of our neighbours, a good friend, was admitted to the cardiac ward here, and has the room next to Kevin. He has to have the same operation. They can visit each other!

I spoke again today to the young couple who gave Kevin CPR when he collapsed. They're going to come and see us when Kevin is better.

Thanks again to everyone for all the kind messages. Kevin has given up on the clanky hospital computer.

Today my dad went over to the cardiothoracic unit (aka Thoracic Park) in Basildon, which is a pretty spectacular £60 million facility next to the main hospital.

He has his own very large room with a magnificent view across bleak, rather beautiful fields straight out of a Thomas Hardy novel. He is in excellent spirits which were buoyed still further when a large plate of fish and chips turned up just before we left him.

In fact by this time he was rather more interested in reading The Observer than talking to either of us! He has three Mma Ramotswe books to read between now and then.

He's due to have his operation on Tuesday morning at 8.

Thank you to everyone for all the messages.

Dad had his operation yesterday. We got the call to say he was back on the ward at 1.45pm, just as we were watching the finale of The King's Speech at the Empire Cinema in Basildon. (It's very good so we are going back to see it tomorrow morning so that we can give it our full attention. Visiting at Thoracic Park doesn't start till 2pm.)

We saw the surgeon later on and he told us it had gone very well. Dad was pretty groggy yesterday but was sitting up and talking by the time we visited today. He's feeling pretty uncomfortable now the morphine's worn off but that's understandable in the circumstances. He actually had a quadruple bypass rather than a triple.

Our neighbour is now in the same ward and is having his bypass operation in the morning. His wife is at our hotel so we can all help each other.

Internet access is limited where we are staying at the Premier Inn, but we will do our best to keep you posted. Thank you all very much for your kind messages.

I'm gritting my teeth a little on Kevin's behalf right now because it's about this time that the nurses will be encouraging him out of bed and up on to his feet.
The memories of my own recent experience are still fresh and I know just how strong the desire to curl up in a ball and pull the covers over your head is at this time. Either through Kevin's superhuman willpower or the sheer persistance of our wonderful nursing staff, Kevin will be upright and walking to the shower-room.
Anyone who has been through this, and there are plenty here, will remember these early days of recovery. The chest-clearing (huff, huff!), armchair physio, wobbly legs along the corridoor, and will remember how fragile and grateful and often tearful these days are.
Hopefully Anne and Ciaran take some encouragement from reading these messages to Kevin. Right now they too need all the support they can get.

Dad was discharged today and arrived home a couple of hours ago. It's been a long and arduous journey back since that day, exactly six weeks ago, when he walked up the hill to church, but he is very pleased and relieved.

He's also very tired and is now in bed but wants to say thanks to everyone who has taken such an interest in his progress. I would imagine he will post something on here himself in the next day or two.

Our priority now is to ensure that he regains his customary vigour and for us all to try and get back to normal - as far as possible at least.

We've had amazing support from our friends. It was so strange that Dad and our neighbour were in the hospital together comparing notes. Four of us stayed in the hotel in Basildon, visiting the hospital each day. In the end we settled into something of a routine and once Dad started to recover from the surgery we had quite good fun really.

Just popped into the Mudcat after a long absence, and was shocked to read this thread.

My very best wishes to Kevin, with whom I have PM'd in the past during some flame war or other, because I found him to be a kindred spirit and a rock of common sense.

Coincidentally, the occasion of my visit today was the poem An Bunnán Buí, which is a warning of the danger of adopting too healthy a lifestyle, especially during winter weather.

McGrath himself. Back home properly, touch wood.

This is an amazing thread. I read bits of it Ciaran printed out for me, but when I've got the energy I'll read the whole thing. Right now I'm still pretty bushed.

Thanks for all the good wishes and good thoughts.

Actually going back in our local hospital was quite good and strange, because the Accident and Emergency rooms were full of people who'd worked to save me back on 19th December, when my heart just stopped in church, and caused general consternation, and the swimming pool couple stepped in and did CPR on a real person for the first time.

Anyway the A & E people were excited and pleased, because most stories like mine don't end too well - a nurse said maybe one in 50...

I felt a bit like Harry Potter, "the boy who didn't die". I hadn't realised it was that close. I think the Mudcat good wishes must have been backdated to help out.

Incidentally here is a set of photos of the church it all happened in. Great setting for a final curtain - but I'm glad it wasn't.

I was wiser than I knew when I wrote:

Well I try to explain, and you might understand,
it's a fine place to go to when you're feeling grand -
but when your heart's heavy, and you're shackled and pinned,
you can reach out for help with the Blue Clicky Thing

It is an amazing stained glass interior - and no one seems to know about it. They should be beating their way to see it. A hidden jewel.

It was made by monks at Buckfast Abbey in Devon, and here's a picture of a remarkable window from the same people, which is at the Abbey itself.
