article - Rudd's stimulus package is far from perfect, by Sinclair Davidson

Sinclair Davidson is a professor in the School of Economics, Finance and Marketing at RMIT University and a senior Fellow at the Institute of Public Affairs.

Economic stimulus package under senate scrutiny Program on Australian Broadcasting Commission evening news program - PM covers a broad spectrum of issues relevant to all sections of Australia's geographically and culturally diverse community.

The Business Council on the Rudd Stimulus Package - An association of chief executives of leading Australian corporations that aims to build a better and more prosperous Australian society.

The IPA supports the free market of ideas, the free flow of capital, a limited and efficient government, evidence-based public policy, the rule of law, and representative democracy.

I thought the money was only for low incomes (ie. government support & the very low paid) & got a shock to see the money in my account! I'm retired on a good private superannuation pension & don't need a top up.

I was planning to buy some new shoes (always expensive for the types I wear) so used part of the money to buy 2 pairs. The rest disappeared into my account & paid for whatever I bought next!

I have a friend on a disability pension who found the money very useful.

it seems to me like a sensible way to stimulate an economy, pity the irish politicians are so clue less, they dont seem to understand how to manage capitalism successfully.

One of the world's leading economists, the Nobel Prize winner Joseph Stiglitz, says no country implemented a better or more effective stimulus package than Australia. The stimulus worked and Australia beat the global recession, and kept people in jobs.

Over Fifty Australian Economists Agree Fiscal Stimulus Prevented A Major Recessi

Nobel Laureate Professor Joseph Stiglitz stated publicly that the Australian Fiscal Stimulus was a well designed package that saved the Australian economy from a major recession that has hit almost all the other OECD economies. He argued that the Australian package was a model for other economies facing similar problems.

After the stimulus package, the Australian economy avoided recession and survived the Global Financial Crisis in surprisingly good shape.

I note that Sinclair Davidson is a member of the Institute of Public Affairs (IPA, a right-wing, corporate funded think tank based in Melbourne). It has close links to the Liberal Party of Australia, with its Executive Director John Roskam having run for Liberal Party preselection for a number of elections. (In Australia, the Liberal party is a conservative pro-business party). The IPA key policy positions include: pro privatisation and deregulation; pro-nuclear power; attacks on unions and non-government organisations; support of assimilationist Indigenous policy (cf. the Bennelong Society) and anti-science skepticism of climate change.

Well done Freda

You have nailed the IPA well

Gerard Henderson is one of their supporters and apologists I believe

Nothing changes in OZ...Like the Bourbons they have learnt nothing and fogotten nothing

The flooding is expected to do a hit of at least 1% GDP (national!) - but then as people replace lost items, there may be a slight boom.
