John Ross' discography of Ewan MacColl

Subject: John Ross' discography of Ewan MacColl
From: GUEST,freebornman

Hello!

This page existed for many years and is well-known to anyone who like Ewan MacColl's music.

This one:
http://www.well.com/~johnross/discographies/ewanmaccoll.htm

The discography created by John Ross who has passed away a year ago.

The page is unavailable now. Does anybody know what happened to it?

The second thing. If this page is not going to be online anymore in its original location - I thought I can put it up at my site (http://ewan-maccoll.info/). I have this page saved on my PC. So I can kind of "restore" it. Though I'm not sure it is a correct thing to do as it is not mine. Any thoughts on that subject?

Thank you VERY MUCH for saving it and posting this thread. John was a long time friend of Ewan and Peggy, as well as being a strong resource for all things related to traditional folk music. I, for one, think you should make his work available for everyone. Bob(deckman)Nelson

As the pages were published (on the internet) one would expect that the rights associated with that work would have passed to the heirs of the authors estate. Therefore technically, you would be asking permission of those heirs (if indeed there are any).
If you were to publish it in its orginal form you might be breaching copyright. But then, exactly who might sue you. There appears to be no financial gain involved in this endeavour. So who was it who said "Publish and be damned!"

Of cousre, you might edit/modify some aspects of the webpages, then they would be yours wouldn't they!

My memory tells me that John Ross had virtually no heirs, excepting two distant cousins on the East Coast of America. As there is obviously NO MONEY, or any obvious financial gain from publishing this work of John's, I again, suggest you post it. bob(deckman)nelson

I agree with Bob. John Ross seemed to be an incredibly isolated man, as we learned when he died and we discussed the collection he had amassed.

He created intellectual property that he published online. He wanted people to have access to it.

Based upon this, I'd say go ahead and publish it and credit it to John Ross, with his birth and death dates and a link to the discussion here at Mudcat. There is a photo of John in my photos here at Mudcat; he went with several of us on a ferry in Puget Sound to scatter my father's ashes. If you'd like, I can crop the original photo and send you an isolated shot. (It might take a little while to find the original, which I think is a print, but you could link to that mudcat photo in the meantime.)

Hi, bradfordian!

Sure, it's not an issue with the copyright law. Still I felt a bit uncomfortable about publishing other person's work without any permission.

So, I think (reading comments here) that I'll publish this page then (I'll give the link here later, in a couple of days).

Stilly River Sage, it's a good idea about John's photo. But... can you please give me the link to it? I can't find it - maybe because I'm not a member of mudcat, but just a "guest".

Thank you!
Alex.

OK, it took me less time than I thought.
Here it goes: http://ewan-maccoll.info/JohnRossList.aspx

I've made no changes to the original file, so it looks the same as it was, except for one thing: I've added links to detailed information for each album. (Not all of them - some releases are absent on my site - some compilations and 78rpms). So John Ross' discography is now "clickable" :-)

See if this will get you there: John is the second from the left in the photo, and if the link hits the whole page, it's the top photo.

You should join Mudcat. As the link says, Membership Has Its Privileges.

Yes, thank you, SRS! I will crop it and add it to my site.

I once joined mudcat, but now I've forgot my password. Very stupid. And I don't see any password recovery feature here. Of course I can join again, using different e-mail address, but chances are high that I shall forget the new password also. Which will be even more stupid. :-)
I have e-mailed your password to the e-mail on your registration. -Joe, the semi-automatic password sender- (joe@mudcat.org)

Joe Offer ... might you be able to archive this treasure? bob(deckman)nelson

If there's a need, we can probably work out an arrangement with Max - with permission from the person who collected the information. We have a number of significant folkie treasures archived - check the QuickLinks dropdown menu.

Best you can do is get tacit approval from the people who knew John Ross and who knew he would have wanted his research to stick around for a while.

I don't know Peggy - I met John Ross only a couple of times, mostly we had email conversations about his work and the work I need to do.

Someone sent a PM explaining that this might be Peggy Seeger. But as much as she has an interest in it, it doesn't impact whether the work of someone else is published or not, though a vote of approval would be nice. Kind of along the lines of "unauthorized" biographies are still published, etc.

This is going to be my last posting to this thread: John Ross assembled a discography of Ewan MacColl's work. That's all he did. POST IT ... MAKE IT AVAILABLE TO TO WORLD. What's the problem ... DO IT! bob(deckman)nelson
