Origins of The Trampwoman's Tragedy

Does anyone know the true story behind Thomas Hardy's poem 'The Trampwoman's Tragedy', excellently recorded by Phil Callery, among others?
I seem to remember it was based on a murder case in the 1830s, and concerned a woman called Mary Ann Taylor. Being a curious chap, I'd love to find out the true story.

There's a reference to the possible Mary Ann Taylor origin HERE

Most of his sources seem to be detailed in THIS BOOK of which GoogleBooks will show part.

The tune was written by Tim Laycock, on a bus!!
While riding to a gig somewhere in the south of England.
I love this song, but it is so long and complex I don't think I could ever sing it from memory
completely.
If you like this, you should definitely read other Thomas Hardy poems, they are better than his novels.
