BS: Things I appreciate- or ought to

It occurred to me this morning that we don't/can't appreciate things we are not aware of.

For instance, the last few days in Juneau, Alaska have been bitterly cold. Strong winds on top of low temperatures.

I've been taking care of two small dogs in addition to my own dog while their owner is out of town. It has been so cold that they make short work of their 'business' and then they're ready to dash back inside.

This morning the wind had mostly died down, except for gusts, so I took them on their normal walk. And although I was wearing gloves my fingers got so cold that I had to look at my hands to see if I was holding all the leashes.

When I got back to the apartment my fingers hurt badly; I tucked them in my armpits (brrrrr) and eventually they warmed up.

And you know what? As soon as they no longer hurt I forgot about them. A 'normal' condition to my brain didn't call for attention.

I want to learn to be appreciative of normal things.

We've been house bound due to the weather for the last 5 days. But it means I have a roof over my head. A lot of folks don't. I sure appreciate that.

I appreciate that the temperature inside the dogs remained viable anyway.

Hmmmmm. Amos, what do that mean?

For the record, both of my friend's dogs wear a coat outdoors and the last couple of days I've put a second coat on them. And my dog- well, my new little dog is a Chinese Crested. Hairless, you know, and he wears a sweater indoors. To go outdoors in this weather I put two overcoats over his sweater.

he is a rescued dog. Personally I would never bring a hairless dog into a far northern climate.

But "viable"?

I appreciate the mild winter we are having so far. But, I now would appreciate the usual deep freeze with lots of fluffy snow because I was just up and down a ladder shovelling trenches every several feet along the eave of Mum's house and applying de-icer in an attempt to vent the ice damming that is backing water up and forming small shingles on the soffit return. So if it gets REALLY cold, I shall appreciate it.

Oh, and I appreciate not slipping on the ladder after the snow got on the rungs.

Ebbie... that was my first thought... a hairless dog in Alaska? Do you have a bug jacket for it in summer?

I very often stop and give thanks for the 'normal'. I think it's the best defense against depression. But as Ebbie pointed out, what really brings it home and sharpens your appreciation is a bout with adversity, even if it is a little thing like being outside and getting really chilled, and coming into your warm house. I was sick with a bad cold and bronchitis. It has made me feel so grateful for my health, now that I'm much better, and even when I had bronchitis I was thankful it wasn't something worse. Also, adversity sharpens your sense of empathy. If you've been uncomfortably cold, and you are able to come home to a warm shelter, it makes you think about those who can't do this, and you can imagine how they must feel, and it might motivate you to help. Ditto with illness. I've made a conscious effort to focus on the positive, and most of the time I succeed.

At the moment, I am really grateful for the electricity which helps to heat our home and keeps me connected with you all.:-)

" As soon as they no longer hurt I forgot about them. A 'normal' condition to my brain didn't call for attention."

Yep...thats how it works, thank goodness. If we normally 'remembered' and dwelled on all the sad & uncomfortable & frustrating things that have happened, it would be quite a mental turmoil.

I just recently repaired a toilet downstairs that had leaked and not refilled properly for several years...(obsolete parts were found on the WWW)...and now I'm 'almost' used to just flushing it without having to monitor the process and open & close the valve at the wall. It is really nice occasionally glance at some former problem and realize it IS now 'normal'.

A dog's natural temperature is 100 degrees
Many people don't know that when they leave Rover in a car in the summer.

Little things...when we were in NC I didn't have any Yogurt, so my lovely hostess, Dani, went out and bought some for me!

Jacqui is always doing little things that please me.

Gnu, you can buy a long handled "roof rake" to make that easier.

BTW, you could also install these:
roof-de-icing-cables

My parents-in-law installed those quite a few years back.

Luckily, when it hit the fan, the firemen (are you still allowed to call them that?) got there very quickly, and the insurance company covered what damage had already occurred, so everything ended well.

Ed T... wouldn't be worth a shit with what is on the roof. Trust me. I are a injunear and I know what is wrong. And, I have all the papers from 12 years ago when the roof was "re-roofed". On Monday, and, if necessary, in the spring, I shall procede with exacting remedial measures from the roofing company.

My old company's slogan was, "Don't expect. Inspect." I shall be inspecting and then expecting, sooner or later.

(In other words, they fucked up on the eave protection and they will pay if they are still in business in the spring. I have pics. I have a video camera. I have the knowledge. Unfortunate that many others do not.)

Having had a colonoscopy, I now really appreciate eating solid food, eating and drinking things that aren't clear, sleeping at least a little at night, and crap with lumps in it.

Jeri... have you met a mucil?

Meeting mucils was not allowed 5 days prior to the butt-scope, and afterwards, food worked. Lumps in/lumps out, that's what they say.

Jeri, several years ago, Little Neophyte aka Banjo Bonnie, a nutritionist, told me a couple of dried figs per day in a smoothie would keep thing m o v i n g - never had a problem since.

Small package sent to you a couple of days, ago...made me appreciate friends to dump junk on.**bg**

The colonoscopy was last month, folks, and everything went according to plan. I mean, it was planned, and it all went. Like, a gallon's worth went. Here's a tip: the stuff tastes vile. If you add lemon-flavored Crystal Lite, it turns things a day-glo yellow. More than you wanted to know. (I actually wrote a bunch on this, and you can thank me for not posting that.)

Ebbie:

In the context "viable" means warm enough to keep the dogs workin and alive.

The inside temperature of a dog being one of the many things we often fail to appreciate.

"Outside of a dog, a good book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read anyway." Groucho

Ebbie,

If the internal temperature of the dogs had dropped below a viable level, the wee things would have "expired."

Actually, I'm pretty sure viable means that it can survive. So you're saying you hope the temperature inside a dog will live, not the dog. (Yeah, I know: picky.)

Can I eat the figs without the smoothie and get the same results? I like the figs, but don't have time to make smoothies. Maybe the lesson is that I need to slow down and take the time to make smoothies....

Yeah, Joe, you can, but a smoothie with almond milk, blueberries, and banana tastes yummy and satisfies more, imo! It only takes about two minutes. Make it easy with ONE OF THESE.

Jeri, I was just following the lead.:-)

If a dog's body temperature is "viable" it means it (the dog, silly) can keep on living. You literalist....

'Course, tacit or implicit grammar is one of them things we should appreciate but often fail to.

Woken up out of a warm bed at 4:30 by a tenant's reporting that the heat was off and re-starting the furnace in the basement, I now sit at the computer while I wait to see if the furnace contunes to run. Not sure what I can appreciate about the situation- except it could be/could have been: if the furnace had not restarted, if it had gone off earlier in the night...

It isn't all that cold in here (51 degrees) but I hope it warms up a good bit before people start rising. Good thing it is Saturday.

Well, it is now after 7 o'clock. After another crisis, I am thinking about climbing back into bed. Start my day over. :)
