15 Jan 11 - 08:42 AM (#3075069) Subject: RE: Origins: Songs from the Luddite Period From: Bob the Postman I spent much of October and November of last year producing four 20 minute radio essays on Luddism and its songs for the labour issues show on our local co-op station. This thread is a good place to start. The link in the second post is particularly fertile ground. |

Episode 4 of my Luddism opus airs on January 19 and 26 sometime between 13h00 and 14h00 Pacific Standard Time, which in the UK would be past most sensible people's bedtime, I should think. The other episodes have vanished into the ether. |

16 Jan 11 - 06:45 AM (#3075571) Subject: RE: Origins: Songs from the Luddite Period From: The Doctor You could also have a look at the Folmk Leads site: http://www.folkleads.org.uk/songs_a-d/croppers_songs/cropper_lads_music.html There's a couple of songs there as well as an article written by my wife, mainly about Yorkshire, but you might find something. She studied the Luddites as part of a local history course, so she may have more information. |

17 Jan 11 - 09:05 AM (#3076332) Subject: RE: Origins: Songs from the Luddite Period From: Brian Peters Roy Palmer's new book 'Working Songs' includes tunes and texts for Cropper Lads, Foster's Mill, General Ludd's Triumph, and The Owselbury Lads (from the Captain Swing riots), plus much interesting discussion. |
17 Jan 11 - 09:16 AM (#3076342) Subject: RE: Origins: Songs from the Luddite Period From: Brian Peters I should add the 'General Ludd's Triumph' describes the general as "the hero of Nottinghamshire", and the broadside turned up in Nottingham itself, so right up Hazel's street I should think. 'Working Songs' also includes words and music for the Nottingham broadside 'The Tear of Pity' apparently written by a framework knitter from Sutton. |
