Songbook- Uncommon Sailor Songs (Ipcar)

Most folks on this forum probably already know that I have an avid interest in sea songs, traditional as well as contemporary. There's another set of sea songs that's somewhere in between, those which have been adapted for singing from poets who lived or worked during the Great Age of Sail. There are the poems of Cicely Fox Smith and a sampling of what I and others have done with her work is represented in the Sea Songs of C. Fox Smith. My new songbook titled Uncommon Sailor-Songs primarily includes the poems of old sailor-poets whose songs have been adapted for singing, plus a sampling of original songs, and a few neglected vintage songs.

Poets include Bill Adams, Edwin J. Brady, Lincoln Colcord, Burt Franklin Jenness, Harry Kemp, Henry Lawson, Hamish Maclaren, John Masefield, William McFee, Angus Cameron Robertson, and Robert Louis Stevenson; most of these poets had actual experience as sailors. Other songs are newly composed in the tradition of older sea songs, and are testament to the continuation and revitalization of nautical singing: Ron Baxter, Jon Campbell, Amos Jessup, Joe McGrath, Vince Morash, Rudy Sunde, and Bob Watson. And some are parodies of traditional sea songs: Talitha MacKenzie, and Micki Perry. Many of my own original songs as well as adaptations of old poems are included in this collection.

Here's a link to where you can download a sample of the Songbook: click here for website

All songs have full musical notation, chords, lyrics and background notes. All have been recorded by the editor as CDs or as MP3 samples; the CDs may be purchased from his website: http://www.charlieipcar.com/ and the MP3 samples downloaded for free. Each song is illustrated with at least one appropriate graphic.

This Songbook may be ordered from the above website above for $35, which includes shipping and handling within the States.

I posted some comments re. this book some weeks or months ago on a different thread, but it might be worth mentioning here as well.

A fine book of sea songs is "Songs of the Sea: The Tales and Tunes of Sailors and Sailing Ships," by Stan Hugill, published by McGraw-Hill Book Co., UK, 1977. It's a fine resource for anyone interested in this genre of folk songs. It's hardbound, 8"X10" and when I bought it [some years ago] sold for $17.50. Probably double that by now. Words, melody score, history and background of over 100 sea songs from a half-dozen countries, plus several pages of background information on "the age of sail" including the types of ships and types of songs, along with a great many illustrations and drawings.

Peter-

That's what it's for.

I'm hoping we can provoke a few more songbooks by other songwriters such as Bob Watson, Ron Baxter, Andrew McKay and of course Jon Campbell.
