Have I been out to lunch? Just noticed this today at the top of the threads to the right a little bit. Kinda neat!

current visitors to mudcat.org are: 27 / reading / 7 writing / 90 idle

Interesting. I don't see it being of any immediate use for those of us not involved with running the show, but doubtless someone more ingenious than I will find a way to incorporate it into one of those odd games we indulge in on here.

I will admit to wondering how it distinguishes "reading" from "idle" though.

In my last 7 or 8 page flips here, I've seen the new thing twice.

I suspect it's a feature still under development(?).

"current visitors to mudcat.org are:
30 reading / 2 writing / 80 idle
powered by chartbeat"

It appears sporadically in the Random Link area; roughly to the right of the Mudcat Cafe logo. I reckon that "Reading" means a person has clicked on a link. As for "Idle"... humph!

What's the difference between reading and idle? And - I've just checked the writing bit. No change - and I'm writing...

Just what I was wondering, Gnomad. How do they know whether I am reading slowly or being 'idle' (leaving aside the possibility that I might be very busy nearby while they think I am doing nothing).

Or can they tell when my computer is switched off? I turned it off last night with the mudcat page in place, which was still up when I turned it on again this morning. Is that what 'idle' means?

Reading and writing refer to accessing files. Idle would be logged in and not logged out.

Will, when I am reading and I refresh the page the tally does change.

O dear... secret's out... now everybody'll KNOW...

I just stay logged in, and tend to leave the Mudcat page open in my browser as one of several tabs, which makes me "idle" 99% of the time.

The stats keep dis-&-reappearing on my screen too. They're out to lunch at the moment so I can't check (which I just tried to do) but are there really only 86 - or whatever it was - people who stay logged in all the time?

If it only counts 'logged in' or 'logged out' as idle, does that mean it only counts members, and not guests? That would make the stats pretty meaningless.

I see it occasionally, but not constantly. Sometimes on the home page, sometimes on the threads I'm perusing. But it's too obtrusive, IMO. If one has to have it, why not just confine it to the home page?

Well I seem to be in the minority, as I think it's quite interesting to know what the volume of traffic is.

But if I'm editing a response to a post in one Chrome tab, whilst I've got three other threads open in other tabs that I've either read or am about to read ... am I recorded as one visitor or four? And (as others have mentioned) how long does a page sit open befoire it becomes idle?

I'm currently composing a thread simultaneously praising fRoots, Bellowhead, Show Of Hands, Mike Harding's radio programme, and the 1953 definition, just to see if the usage spike is noticeable :)

And +1 for the idea of distinguishing between logged-in users and guests.

Looks like the stats are displayed in the yellow "news" box that has been at Mudcat for a long time. I didn't see the stats box yesterday, but I'm seeing it quite frequently today. I don't know if it's set to display constantly, or intermittently. I think the latter.

we have it on another site & it's fun to realise that someone, somewhere is also looking at stuff when I am!

Are they in my time zone, are they half the world away, are they on the opposite side of the world ...

wot fun!

If you go to "messages since last visit" you can pretty well judge who the counter...counts... as active. I suppose there's a time past which if you are still logged in but not posting, it calls you 'idle'.

Reload the page if you don't see the stats in the random link window. They turn up often.

Is this why that web site (can't remember the name, but I see it on the bottom of the page) regularly pings the page? I looked it up a while back, one time when I caught the name. Better Privacy notices cookies from it in Firefox.

Here's the Chartbeat web site. I figure the answers to most of our questions—like what's the difference between "reading" and "idle"—must be there someplace, but I haven't found them yet.

"idle" are probably those who have left their computer screen keyed to Mudcat but have gone to the bathroom, are walking the dog, answering their cellphone, dozed off, or all the range of things one can do rather than access a thread to read or compose a witty post.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Here's a page called Understanding what chartbeat is measuring.

Here is a quote from Chartbeat's FAQ page:

How are reading and writing measured?

Chartbeat is able to measure not just when someone clicks on and off your page but also what they are doing on that page.

'Reading' means that the user is actively engaging with your content and this is calculated by using a combination of metrics including scrolling and mouse movement.

'Writing' takes those visitors that fall into the 'reading' category of those actively engaged with the content of your site and measures whether they are using their keyboard (for example to write a comment or search for something).

'Idle' visitors comprise the remainder of your visitors, they might have opened your page in a tab but be working on something else right now.

Seeing as how they ping you all the time and I block all that stuff, I will not register according to their system, but just stuff up the figures.
