When the no-smoking ban took effect in the UK, I stopped both as, for me, smoking a pipe or cigar in the open air took away the enjoyment of the flavour. It was fun, but I don't miss it. |

A couple of years ago I went up to Scotland and took some tobacco to deter the midges. The guy I went with had just been told by his doctor to give up smoking as he had had some health problems and was heading for trouble if he didn't. He was obviously craving a bit. I hadn't the heart to smoke so I still have the tobacco. |

To begin with it smelled really nice - a kind of rich honey smell - but after a few days it smelled absolutely FOUL. I suspect he wasn't cleaning it properly but he wouldn't be told. |

My Granddad, my Uncle, even my own Dad for some time. I am never offended by pipesmoke. I am sure men have affairs with their pipes. They caress them, mould them, hold them, cleam with such care and tenderness. I do not believe this is some oral fixation however, as has been suggested some time past, but a genuine love affair. They are are so very very different - men and pipes - with not one being the same. Romantic? Maybe. But I'll leave it for the pipesmokers to tell it how it really is. I am convinced, however, that a man who smokes a pipe is not just a smoker (and I recall, when I was younger, quite a few women who smoked pipes back then too). Pipesmoking men of my acquaintance seem to have something more about them. Intangible... but there.Have any other women felt that? (I NEVER tried a cigarette) I used to carry one around and forget to use it. I thing I liked collecting pipes and comparing tobaccos more than actually smoking...and when I married 30 years ago, she was a bit allergic to smoke, so that was it.. ..anyone want to buy 3-4 interesting pipes? |

I guess it was an attempt at trying to emulate my father who smoked a maple blend. I preferred a cherry blend, myself. But what I ultimately came to realize was that pipe smoke invariably smelled way better than it tasted. Not only that, but the room in which the smoking took place smelled nice for only a short time, after which it simply stank. |

It's the smoldering with restricted air that makes the "flavor" different than either a cigar or cigarette, and it's really tough to "pack" a proper bowl in the usual kinds of beer can bongs. Maybe if you smoked a whole can full all at once ...(?) But I doubt that's what's meant. John |

I don't smoke a tenth of what I used to now I'm banned at work and in the pub; these days it's a bit cold outside the pub, but I smoke there anyway, because a pint's good & a pipe of tobacco is good. But both together are glorious. |

Secondary school teacher said our older son's approach to, probably, maths or physics problems was 'this is interesting' and that he was metaphorically getting a pipe going. The lad's a consulting engineer now. One boss of mine smoked little but reckoned that pipes were great as a delaying tactic in negotiations. Used to smoke them, not vast volumes, until the mid-90s. In principle still would once in awhile and indeed have the necessary supplies, but just don't get round to it. Probably play music instead. Reminds me - man in our guitar group a bit back - a rather stressed solicitor - said playing the guitar stopped him drinking. |

When I was at Rutgers, a woman said to me "Gee, I just love a man who smokes a pipe." Switched over but never went much further with her. Eventually my collection grew to about 80 pipes, almost all of which I still have in storage. At one point, I worked as a blender for a tobacconist. About that time, I became enchanted with latakia blends, which I smoked until I stopped smoking in the mid 80's. I never quit but the most recent smoke I had was a really good cigar I enjoyed over the course of several hours during the last major blackout. |

I am also a "Sherlockian" in one of my other lives, so it gave me a bit of an excuse. Usually cherry-flavored tobacco. My late wife was the only woman I ever had anything to do with who smoked (cigarettes), as it contributed in a major way to my mother's death in 1987. Anyway, my wife tried to quit cigarettes any number of times over the years without success. Ultimately, she died in 2006 from lung cancer and an unexpected massive stroke. I never smoked again. Still have the pipes, but they are gathering dust. I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss the pipes and having a nice smoke once in awhile. Jay |

I never smoked cigarettes, nor have ever intentionally inhaled any tobacco product. I tried pipes, did not like them. Though, some pipe tobaccos smell OK at a distance. I tried smokeless tobacco, and found it foul. I occasionally smoke cigars. And have done so since I was 13. I still do. I enjoy about 20 to 30 V. good cigars a year. I have to be in the right mood, with the right outdoor setting. I enjoy the taste of good cigars, and find smoking them (with a good Scotch) relaxing in warm evenings. I especially enjoy them on vacations (such as in Cuba, Dominican Rapublic or the Ybor area of Tampa Florida. Smoking a good cigar with a friend who enjoys them is a treat to me. Atip, beware of smoking indoors. Outside of health concerns, the smell gets into porus material (like wood and cloth), to later "come out" in damp conditions. |

From: eddie1 Many moons ago when I was about 20, I decided to give up cigarettes in favour of a pipe and I went to a tobacconist in Edinburgh (There were lots thhen, don't think there are any now) He could not have been more helpful. He gave me a pipe, a cherrywood, and told me the advantages - cheap and didn't need breaking in. He then held bowls of various tobaccos under my nose until I found what I liked but also gave me reccommendations as to whether they burnt hot or cool etc. He then made me up a blend and the exact proportions were written down in a book with a page just for me. Each time I went back he took time to discuss my progress with the pipe and changed the blend a few times. He felt like a friend. Got stopped on the street once while I was smoking my pipe and was asked for directions. Great to be able to use the pipe as a pointer - "Turn left there, second on right" etc. As has already been said, the pipe was also a great delaying tactic. Got out of pipe smoking and back to cigarettes somewhere but I might look at returning to pipe smoking. Eddie |
