Larry Hanks Heading East . ... Finally !

The Berkeley-based folksinger LARRY HANKS will be heading east this spring with his wife and singing partner DEBORAH ROBINS-HANKS. The two have recently issued a brand-new CD, NO HIDING PLACE, which is already drawing enormous praise.

Larry is a national treasure, one of our greatest purveyors of traditional and tradition-based American song. Unfortunately, he leaves the west coast so rarely that many Americans have never had the chance to hear him. And now that he and Deborah have paired up, we'll also get wonderful harmonies and another great performer.

Here's what our very own "Anglo" (John Roberts) had to say about Larry last April, here on Mudcat:

"LARRY IS GREAT!

"I've known him for more than 30 years - he embodies the essence of traditional American music - Go and see him, you won't be disappointed, and will curse yourself for missing him when your friends tell you how good he was."

That's quoted with Anglo's permission, which tells you he means it.

For Midwest Bookings (month of May), contact Deborah Robins-Hanks. She's a loyal Mudcatter, so you can PM her here at BabyPix.

I'm in charge of East Coast Bookings (month of June). PM me at Martha Burns.

Meanwhile, Larry and Deborah made a grand tour of the UK last April. Would love to hear feedback from Mudcatters who were able to hear them.

i seem to connect his name with KPFA--did he have a radio show there?

Although Larry didn't have a radio program at KPFA, he was a frequent live guest on various shows there. He did, however, host a radio program from Bellingham, WA, for several years.

Warmest thanks to Martha Burns for her indefatigable work in setting up the East Coast portion of our tour. I heartily recommend HER considerable talents for this service, as well as her many musical gifts!

Kindest regards,

Deborah Robins-Hanks

If you live on the east coast and have thus been denied the pleasure of Larry's music these past forty-plus years, here's a wonderful (unlisted) video of Larry singing "Maquiladoras," with Jody Stecher accompanying on mandolin.

Larry is the one that gave us "Apple Pickers' Reel." For a very silly (unlisted) video, see "Apple Pickers' Reel" Like You've Never Heard It. .

Martha ... Thank you muchly for starting this thread. And the videos are a delight to see. I probably first met and heard Larry back in the mid 70's. Beyond his superb playing and performering, he's always impressed me by the company he keeps and the value that other musicians place on him. He is HIGHLY REGARDED.

For those who are not yet familiar with him ... you are in for a treat.

Another thing I'm impressed with is his energy. I'm 173 now, and I have to do some traveling road shows over the next three months. Just the thought of being on the road (again) is daunting. I think we're of similiar vintage, and now he's taking himself ("hisself" as Walt Robertson used to say) clear to the East coast! SHEEUH ... by now I would have figured that he'd learned better! bob(deckman)nelson

And he toured the UK last April!
But if you're truly 173 years old, as you say, Bob, then you're doing very well for yourself. Take off a century or so, and you wouldn't flinch at an east coast tour, either.

What good news for those who haven't heard Mr. Hanks in person. Sorry we won't have that treat here in the St. Louis area. sigh.
I've always liked hearing him perform. I first heard him at Faith Petrick's (also known as the San Francisco Folk Music Club)back in the dim past. I think he used to work at or hung out at Lundberg's for I vaguely recall buying a banjo mute from him there. I'm 173 too, stuff doesn't always pop into my mind when it should. I'll contact Herb Jaeger about dates, especially "sessions" at the Blue Unicorn.
