27 Jan 11 - 11:39 AM (#3083389) Subject: BS: DB's daughter update From: Dharmabum Well,it's been about a year & a half since my daughter's first signs of a T.B.I.(traumatic brain injury)appeared. I've accepted the fact that this has changed both of our lives, although, periodically,I'm reminded just how much. About two weeks ago,Shalisa had a seizure. This is the first one that I'm aware of,& honestly, the first one that I've ever witnessed. I'm glad to say that she recovered in about a minute or two,& has no memory of it happening. I'm also happy to report that I managed to keep it together & did, what I discovered later, were all of the appropriate things to do while someone's having a seizure. (Although, deep down,It felt like an eternity,& I was sh**ing bricks!) We were at the University of Penn Medicine in Phila. last week for an E.E.G. & a visit with the neurologist. The testing showed a few "spikes" in brain activity & we were told that with the present brain damage, that Shalisa will more than likely suffer an occasional seizure. At this time, she's taking an anti seizure medication & I'm monitoring her for any extreme mood changes. I'm doing my best to keep Shalisa as active as possible, both, physically & mentally. Some days that's that's a fairly large task. Some days it's much easier. Other than this latest scare, she's ,for the most part, doing ok. Ironically,I've been so busy dealing with the changes in our lives, I hadn't realized how much our lives had changed. DB. |

27 Jan 11 - 06:24 PM (#3083654) Subject: RE: BS: DB's daughter update From: ragdall DB, Best wishes to you and to Shalisa as you deal with this new challenge. Is Shalisa still able to enjoy her music? Has her short term memory improved any since you posted here in June last year? You mentioned that repetition seemed to help, if Shalisa could repeatedly watch a video of her playing her music could she commit the event to memory? Thanks, rags |

27 Jan 11 - 06:54 PM (#3083671) Subject: RE: BS: DB's daughter update From: Dharmabum Thanks everyone for your support. Rapparee; We still don't know exactly what caused her TBI,but with continued testing,we're hoping to get a definitive diagnoses. Ragdall;Yes,she's still able to play some. But,so far we've been unable to trigger her brain to learn & retain new music. I've recorded one song multiple times onto cd & had her listen to it. She's able to play along with it note for note, but so far unable to repeat it on her own. I have to believe it's all still "in there" somewhere. I'm always hopeful that we'll find a way to it. DB. |
