Lyr Req: Stone outside Dan Murphy's Door

My grandfather used to sing this and other old Irish songs that I remember very fondly from my childhood. My mother was wishing she had the words to these songs, since she doesn't remember them anymore. So I'm on a memory search. If anyone can help me with this, I'd be very appreciative. I've found some of the songs I'm looking for at this site, but this one isn't here in any form that I can identify.

Thanks in advance. Joan

Here are the lyrics, I do not have chords :-(

THE STONE OUTSIDE DAN MURPHY'S DOOR
As recorded by The Dubliners

1. There's a sweet garden spot in our mem'ry.
It's the place we were born in and reared.
It's long years ago since we left it,
But return there we will if we're spared.
Our friends and companions of childhood
Would assemble each night near a score
'Round Dan Murphy's shop, and how often we sat
On the stone outside Dan Murphy's door!

CHORUS: Those days in our hearts we will cherish,
Contented although we were poor,
And the songs that were sung in the days we were young
On the stone outside Dan Murphy's door.

2. When our day's work was over we'd meet there
In the winter or spring just the same.
Then the boys and the girls all together
Would join in some innocent game.
Dan Murphy would take down his fiddle
While his daughter looked after the store.
The music did ring and sweet songs we would sing
On the stone outside Dan Murphy's door.

3. Back again will our thoughts often wander
To the scenes of our childhood's home.
The friends and companions we left there.
It was poverty caused us to roam.
Since then in this life we have prospered,
But still in our hearts we feel sore,
For mem'ry will fly to the days long gone by
And the stone outside Dan Murphy's door.

Joan of Barc - It is indeed a lovely song and tells of a tradition that goes back long before the Common Era. In ancient Celtic culture, people (especially the "upper crust" of tribal society) were expected to keep a bench out side their door. Such benches were often of stone, but not necessarily. People in need of hospitality and persons with a grievance against the householder would sit on the bench. Refusal to grant hospitality was considered bad form, to say the least, and to ignore an aggreived party was a serious black mark on the reputation of the householder, and almost sure to have the problem brought before the Brehons. I would imagine that many, if not most, other cultural groupings had or have traditions od similar effect.

Dear Mudguard: Thank you so very much! I never thought to have the words so quickly (the chords weren't that important, but if I could get them, we'd be that much farther ahead).

My mother is in her 70's now and I know this will mean a lot to her. Thanks. Joan.

Dear Paddymac: Thank you for the history! Although my grandfather came with his family from Ireland as a small child, and we have many Irish stories in our families today, I hadn't heard this one. Thanks for sharing! Joan.
