Lyr Req: Mo Ve'la Bella Mia da la Muntagna

Subject: Lyr Req: Mo Ve'la Bella Mia da la Muntagna
From: GUEST

Hello,

I'm looking for the Italian lyrics to "Mo Ve'la Bella Mia da la Muntagna." There are recordings of this song, sung by Matteo Salvatore, on "Chants de Mendiants en Italie"(Beggar Songs from Italy), "Lamenti di Mendicanti" and on the "Big Night" film soundtrack. The lyrics may be in the liner notes. If you find them, please send them along. I'm also interested in other information about this song (even if it's in French) or a translation of the song into English.

Thank you.

MO VE'LA BELLA MIA DA LA MUNTAGNA, sung by Matteo Salvatore, is on the album "Lamenti Di Mendicanti (Italian Beggar Songs)" (Harmonia Mundi, 195434, 2005).

You can also hear the song at YouTube.

The Harmonia Mundi web site says that Matteo Salvatore collected these beggars' songs in the Puglia province of Italy, so I suppose they are in one of the local dialects. The title does not seem to be in standard Italian.

That's all the information I was able to find.

Jim, thank you for your research including the language dialect info and audio.

Also, looking in the Mudcat forum, under the message: http://mudcat.org/detail.cfm?messages__Message_ID=2574025 , Mudcat member "Q" may have the CD "Lamenti di Mendicanti" with liner notes with the Italian lyrics and notes in French.

Looking for my copy- it seems to have wandered off. I can't remember if the liner notes had a translation.

Found my copy. Part of the lyrics differ from those posted by guest.
The album is by Harmonia Mundi France, with lyrics in the booklet notes only in the original, and French. I give both; perhaps Monique may translate the French for us.

Mo vé la bella mia de la muntagna
Coll. Matteo Salvatore

Ora viene la bella mia dalla *montagna *(as printed)
porta le mele a spalla al paese
Fai presto, bella mia, al mercato
le mele dobbiamo venderle tutte quante
Oi né oi là, il bene mio impazzire mi fa.

Maintenant ma belle arrive de la montagne

Maintenant ma belle arrive de la montagne
sur ses épaules elle porte les pommes au pays.
Fais vite, ma belle, au marché
il nous fautvendre toutes les pommes.
Ohi né, ohi là, mon bonheur me rend fou.

Q, your lyrics are in standard Italian, hence the differences. I wonder why they translated "Li mele vamm'a venne tutte quante" (lit. "the apples, we're going to sell them all") by "Le mele dobbiamo venderle tutte cuante" (lit. "the apples, we must sell them all)...

You can hear it sung and find a sheet music here

Btw, it says
Now my pretty one comes from the mountain
on her shoulders she carries the apples to our homeplace (1)
"Hurry up, my pretty, at the market,
we're going to sell all the apples"
Ohi ne, ohi la, my happiness drives me crazy.
(1)"paese" is "country, land" but here it's "their land" = their homeplace

Thanks, Monique.
I often wonder about translations in liner notes. Too often they are done by someone who is unfamiliar with the background.

At the end of the booklet, I see that translations were by Helga Perz and Derek Yeld, and the cd is a re-issue from 1973.

Any more requests?

If my feeling is correct in "porta li mele a spalla allu paiese" though "a spalla" means "on her shoulders" it's more about the way she carries them than where they are but I couldn't render that into English, it wasn't rendered in French either. If it were just about the location it'd be "sulle spalle" however they may say that in dialect. Just a feeling.
Searching if it could be said "sulli spalle" in dialect since it's "li mele", I came across that pdf doc where the lyrics can be found with Fr. and Eng. translations (#14), the lyrics were written (not collected) by Matteo Salvatore (1925-2005) (= there's a copyright). They give "town" for "allu paese".

A Mudcat practice is, if possible, to put the material from the link in mudcat, since websites come and go.

Mo ve' la bella mia dalla muntagne
Matteo Salvatore (1925-2005)
poeta e cantastorie di Apricenna (FG)

Mo ve' la bella mia dalla muntagne porta li mele a spalla a lu pajese
Fa' subite bella mia a lu mercate li meli l'amm' a venne tutte quante
Oi né oi na, lu bene mie 'mpazzi me fá

Voici ma belle qui arrive de la montagne

Voici ma belle qui arrive de l montagne elle apporte les pommes au village
Fait vite ma belle, au marché nous devons vendre toutes les pommes
Oi né oi na, je suis fou de mon amour

here's My Girl, Down from the Mountain

Here's my girl, down from the mountain, on her shoulder the apples she's carrying to town
Hurry, my girl, hurry to the market, those apples we've got to sell every one
Oi né oi na, I am crazy about my love.

Ah! "I'm crazy about my love" makes sense!!! I was wondering why his happiness was driving him crazy. Translations from translations from translations... you start with a novel you end with the phone directory!
I know about copying the material from links, but I'm always reluctant to post in Mudcat material under copyright.

If we keep to pertinent extracts, I think the copyright matter is under control.
Joe rides herd on this as well.

Are you still looking for these words? I have them in Italian and a rough translation in English.

Harry Wells: Our usual advice is, if you have the lyrics, please post them. Even if no one is looking for the words right now, someone will someday, and the words will be waiting here to be found. Mudcat has been in continuous use since 1996 while lots of other websites have come and gone, so this is probably the best place to put them, and they don't seem to exist anywhere else on the Internet.
