that sounds like the BLACK VELVET BAND but I suppose. given the reference to Eileen McManus, that it isn't.

No, I have the Black Velvet Band, in fact I recorded it for Folk Legacy. What I'm seeking is titled Eileen McManus.

EILEEN McMANUS

One day as I strolled along Broadway
A vision came into my view
A vision of sadness and beauty
A beauty that's given to few
There I was in a land of the stranger
There she was I'd not seen her before
But somehow I knew she was Irish
Sweet Eileen from Erin's green shore

So softly a spell cast o'er me
As her lovely form moved on it's way
That I thought of the mother that bore her
And prayed she would love me for Aye
And as Eileen gazed sweetly upon me
Witht the charm of her grace evermore
I was a slave to sweet Eileen McManus
That fair colleen from Erin's green shore

I quickly approached this young maiden
I asked her the cause of her woe
And she said "I am crying for Erin
The land where the green shamrocks grow"
I said just make an end to your sorrow
Dear Eileen McManus asthore
For we'll marry and e'er it's tomorrow
I'll take you to Erin's green shore

We will travel the green hills and mountains
By the road to the gap of Dunloe
And along by the glens and the valleys
To a spot that is called Aghadoe
'Tis my joy just to see you contented
And your tears will be dried evermore
My own beautiful Eileen McManus
You'll be home on old Erin's green shore

Regards Mick Bracken

asthore which is a stor with accent marks (fada) over the a and or means "my love" as in an endearment and not a literal translation.

Also, Eileen McManus has been sung as Eileen MacMahon-same song.

Eileen MacMahon is a similar sort of song. I don't know if it's the same air, but I'll post the words for it later.

You're right Karin, it's near enough the same.

EILEEN McMAHON

One night as I lay on my pillow
A vision appeared in my view
Of a ship sailing over the ocean
And The wind it tremendously blew

On the deck stood a handsome young lady
Whose features I'd ne'er seen before
And she sighed for the wrongs of her country
Saying "I'm banished from Erin's green shore"

In thought I approached this fair lady
And asked her the cause of her sigh
Saying "Cheer up my handsome young lady
And I'll be your slave till I die"

She looked at me in meditation
As the tears from her blue eyes did flow
Saying "I'm a poor exile from Erin
The land where the sweet shamrock grow

My name is Eileen McMahon
My age it is scarcely eighteen
And I thank you, good sir, for your kindness
For you don't know how lonely I've been

For the want of employment in Ireland
I was forced as an exile to stray
Far away from my home in Killarney
Where in childhood I longed for to play

Far away from each mountain and valley
From Punch Bowl to Gap of Dunloe
All around by the shores of sweet Muckross
And that beautiful spot Aghadoe"

It was then I awoke from my slumber
To look for my Eileen machree
It was only the face of my mother
With a fond smile stood gazing at me

The ship on the ocean had vanished
But in fancy I see her once more
My beautiful Eileen McMahon
The pride of old Erin's green shore

Those lyrics are beautiful.. thanks. There must be some Irish in me somewhere, such sentiments touch me. Come to think of it, I had some Scotch in me last Sat. night, does that count?

There must be a number of versions of EILEEN MCMANUS.   The only ones I have heard do it are Irish singers, Daniel O'Donnell and Mary Duff ,as a duet.   The words are very similar but not the same as the one they do. I love Irish ballads and this one is so haunting. Daniel O'Donnell such beautiful Irish ballads.

Around 1957, my father purchased a 78 rpm record (in Manhattan) of "Kevin Barry"/"Eileen McMahon" by the fine singer Anne Greehy with, I believe, the Jackie Roche Trio. He bought it for me to use in a high school presentation of Ireland. I loved that record and played it frequently until it was destroyed by a drunken college roommate in 1961. The lyrics of Eileen McMahon were the same as posted by Mr. Bracken.

I will keep checking ebay for this disk. I don't know what happened to Ms Greehy. I think she was born c. 1939 and I hope she is alive and well.

While driving in my car listening to the haunting lyrics of Eileen McManus, from the 'Timeless' cd of Daniel O'Donnel and Mary Duff, I Googled to find out more about the story behind the song. I wonder whether the lyrics are just prose from a talented song writer, or an actual interpretation of events.
All that aside, goosebumps whenever I listen to it.

I was lucky enough to be present at the crowning of Mary of Dingloe at the festival in 1999. Daniel O'Donnel had Mary Duff as his special guest star and they sang the allad Eileen Mc Manus. I came back to Glasgow and ought the tape with the two of them singing it. I still play it from time to time oth at home and in my car. I will never get sick of this ballad.

Dervish do a fantastic version of Eileen McMahon on the CD "At the End of the Day". This is the only version I have heard so I can't compare it with the others but I love it.
