BS: More Fun For Ryan Air

Do they work on this image thing, or do they just let things happen?

What image? Remember the old adage about paying peanuts & getting monkeys. A friend's daughter got married in Scotland not long ago. She missed the wedding coz she booked with a lowcost line [forget if it was Ryanair or that other one whose name I can't even recall & don't care anyhow coz I would never dream of travelling on it], & they just cancelled the flight, providing no alternative, boomboom just like that! becoz they hadn't sold enuff seats.

To blazes with them. Pay a proper price, for crying out loud, & get proper service, instead of trying to cut corners.

Some of us have no choice, either financially, or due to lack of alternative service providers. There's a heck of a difference to an OAP, between £7.50 on Easyjet to London, and £75 on BA, for the same journey. That's all the choice I have from my local airport.

The principle is more general. The idea that cheapest is best is often wrong. I see so many cockups by "will writers" and "licensed conveyancers" selected on price rather than expertise.

However mechanics it seems to be the other way round - the licensed stealer is often more per hour than many lawyers, yet can screw a mechanical job up better than any shade tree mechanic.

The question I ask is how can such providers as Ryanair provide such low airfares (extremely low) as compared to British Air, Lufthanza etc. .... something(s) must have been comprimised and I hope those somethings are not related to safety.

Guest John MacKenzie, I totally agree. Some of us don't have the option of travelling with the more expensive airlines. But nevertheless, I feel the cutprice ones have a minimum duty to passengers, to be quite clear about extras and 'hidden' charges, to have a seat for you if you've booked (and not to double book the thing!) , to depart and arrive on time unless unavoidably delayed (not on a whim), to provide a modicum of comfort especially sufficient legroom to avoid DVT, and to keep one informed of problems and changes. I find Flybe to be very good, not dirt cheap but I have no alternative here in Norfolk for domestic flights.Guest number 6, you're right, can we be sure they adhere to the minimum safety requirements? Gulp!

On the minimum safety thing you can be sure -- if they're based in a well-regulated jurisdiction with honest enforcement such as Britain or Canada.

Your question about how they stay in business is answered by their apparently whimsical cancellation of under-sold flights. For a cheapie airline, it's crucial to put a bum in every single seat on every single plane that takes off, and to serve only destinations where so many people want to go that full planes are the norm.

For a demonstration of this principle, compare flights between Toronto and Halifax with flights between Toronto and, say, the Bahamas. In February.

Ah well, letting the market find its level. The essence of Adam Smith eh?

Whilst being a dirty rotten stinking capitalist myself, I do accept that those who sell on price rather than quality could have a point.

Pubs that give huge proportions of crap food get a better reputation in many parts of the country than those who sell good quality in smaller plate sizes. An example of quantity rather than quality.

Ryanair understand their market. That's why the issue was for a flight from a set of resorts known for cheap booze & drugs.

Ryan air once cancelled my flight from Dublin as I got to the airport, and all I got in compensation was my £20.00 back. BMI had a half full plane to the same airport where interestingly, seats went up to £200.0 whereas you could have got them for £80.00 an hour earlier.

Welcome to my world.

Ah, fluids, which economist said something to the effect of "There is nothing in the world that a clever man can not make less well or more cheaply and the people who buy such things are his natural prey"?

I'm lecturing ethics of accountancy in a couple of weeks. Might well be a short lecture.

Ladies and gentlemen, and now Arthur Andersen.

Roll closing credits.

That's Gresham's Principle, Richard. It is also stated as "Bad money drives out good money."

In Europe, an airline cannot simply cancel a flight because it wants to, well it can of course, but then every passenger is entitled to quite substantial payments, in fact anything over two hour delay without good reason entitles you to claim something.

Can't it though, CH? Well, no; not legally. But in the case of my friends, related in 2nd post above, do you think they didn't suddenly discover engine trouble, &, oh dear, no other plane available, & offer next flight [2 days later], which would have been too late for the important family occasion for which they were travelling? Pure coincidence, of course, that that first plane happened not to be fully booked.

MtheGM, mechanical problems do not excuse them, all passengers could have claimed a couple of hundred pounds, plus hotel costs etc. It's European law; google is your friend

I'm only glad that we are flying Aer Lingus to Malaga on Friday.

Nevermind the environmental cost of flying of the destruction of the ozone in the upper atmosphere where ozone is a GOOD and NECESSARY thing, we are paying far less to fly than it actually costs. The airlines are simply trying to hand some of those costs back to us. We can choose to accept that cost structure, or we can get around in other ways, or not at all. that is the capitalist party line.

If patrons in sufficient numbers to overcome Republican gridlock do not like things as they are and they feel they must fly, we should insist on airline re-regulation where there is actual answerability by people who are somewhat chosen by a somewhat election process, and not by some mysterious black cape, skull and crossbones, blood-drinking, smoke-filled room strategy-making process. This is but one of many examples of capitalism eating itself.
