I think this is a Jimmie Rodgers song, but not sure.

Here it is as done by Flatt & Scruggs on "Foggy Mountain Jamboree", Columbia CL 1019 (ancient).....Tiger

SOME OLD DAY

Lyric: Louise Certain, Music: Gladys Stacey

I've been workin' all in the rain,
Tied to a dirty old ball and chain.
Oh, dear mother, I'll come home, some old day.
Some sweet day, they'll turn me loose
From this dirty old calaboose.
Oh, dear mother, I'll come home, some old day.

    CHORUS
Some old day, you'll wait for me and pray
Oh, dear mother, I'll come home, some old day.
Some sweet day they'll turn me loose
    From this dirty old calaboose.
Oh, dear mother, I'll come home, some old day.

Oh, dear mother, I've hurt you so.
I've been cruel to you I know.
Oh, dear mother, I'll come home, some old day.
Tell my brother, my sister and dad,
They're the best friends that I've had.
Oh, dear mother, I'll come home, some old day.

    CHORUS

Glenn Miller and his original orchestra (Tex Beneke sang)performed this little ditty on a 1938 live radio broadcast.

I have been told that the Glenn Miller Orchestra of the later 50's and 60's recorded it as an album cut for RCA. Can anyone tell me if it's true, and if so, is it possible to obtain a tape of the song? Thanks!

Here's the catalog data from Indiana University Sheet Music Collections:

WHEN PAW WAS COURTIN' MAW
Words, Jack Manus. Music, Leonard Joy. 1938
First Line: I asked my paw where did they go when folks went courtin'...
Chorus First Line: They didn't have no 'airyplanes', didn't have no streamlined...

According to allmusic, it has been recorded by The Five Keys, Glenn Miller & His Orchestra, Stuff Smith & His Onyx Club Boys, Dick Todd, and The King's Singers.

I pieced this together from several sound samples. It might be incomplete. The opening dialogue comes from the Glenn Miller recording:

WHEN PAW WAS COURTIN' MAW
Words, Jack Manus. Music, Leonard Joy. 1938

[Spoken/recited dialogue:]
–...I feel pretty fair. I just got a letter from my gal down there.
–Down where? –Down there. –Where's there? –Where's there?
My gal's down home in Texas.
–Don't give me that stuff. You do all right.
Why, I see you with a different chick every night.
Now, I'm not a bad guy, won't mention any names,
But what's the story with you and the dames?
–Well, Glenn, I guess I do do pretty well,
But there's really not an awful lot that I could tell.
My Paw was a pretty sharp cat in his day,
And says he used to court Maw in the old-fashioned way.
–Why that old-fashioned stuff wouldn't stand a chance
In the hustle and the bustle of modern romance.
–Oh, it wouldn't, huh? –No! –Well, you'll find out.
I'll show you just what I'm talkin' about.
–Well, go on then. –OK.

[Sings:]
They didn't have no airy-planes,
Didn't have no streamlined trains,
But they had lonely country lanes
When Paw was courtin' Maw.

They didn't have no ritzy bars,
Fancy drinks and caviars,
But they had lots of moon and stars
When Paw was courtin' Maw.

Well, they did have fun; they didn't miss. ... birds and bees(?)
And comin' home they'd steal kiss. Maw'd say "Gosh!" and Paw'd say "Jeez!"

Most important thing somehow,
And, folks, you will allow,
Love was not the same as now
When Paw was courtin' Maw.

They had no opera at the Met,
Hadn't heard of ... yet,
But oh! that barbershop quartet,
When Paw was courtin' Maw.

That heavy drama cast its spell.
Gosh! how they would clap and yell
When that hero saved our bell,
When Paw was courtin' Maw.

Now they didn't have no commentators or a news broadcast.
They listened on the party line and got the news darn near as fast.

Didn't have electric lights,
Just by lamp they'd spoon all night,
But still in all, they did all right
When Paw was courtin' Maw....

YouTube has a video of this song (called WHEN PA WAS COURTING MA) performed by a very young-looking Lawrence Welk and his orchestra. (He doesn't sing or speak but plays the accordion.) The vocalists are, I think, Lois Best & Parnell Grina. Here's my transcription:

WHEN PAW WAS COURTIN' MAW
Words, Jack Manus. Music, Leonard Joy. 1938

We asked our Paw where did they go
When folks went courtin' years ago,
With no amusements like we have today.
Oh, the radio was then unknown.
They just had grandma's gramophone,
But still they fell in love and life was gay.

They didn't have no airy-planes,
Didn't have no streamlined trains,
But they had lonely country lanes
When Paw was courtin' Maw.

They didn't have no ritzy bars,
Fancy drinks and caviars,
But they had lots of moon and stars
When Paw was courtin' Maw.

Well, they did have fun; they didn't miss a single husking bee.
Then comin' home they'd sneak a kiss, and Paw'd say "Gosh!" and Maw'd say "Gee!"

Most important thing somehow,
They all knew, for you'll allow,
Love was love the same as now
When Paw was courtin' Maw.

The bustle that you often wear,
The flowers in your pretty hair
Are so much like what made them stare
When Paw was courtin' Maw.

Now, say, you think you look your very best
In that checkered suit and that fancy vest.
Well, it seems to me that's how they dressed
When Paw was courtin' Maw.

Honey, if we had met in Pappy's time, how different would we talk?
Well, sweet nothings must truly sound alike to the square dance or the Lambeth walk.

"I love you" are the words we say,
And so they were in Pappy's day.
They did it in the same old way
When Paw was courtin' Maw.
