I've been around in Cambridge (UK, not the one over in Massachusetts) for a while, and I'm interested in finding out what's going on around here in the way of folk singing. I've looked through old mudcat threads, but a lot of the posts about Cambridge were a decade or so back, so I'm looking for any current information about (ideally) singarounds, or just generally any other chances to sing and enjoy hearing other people singing. Anyone got any suggestions? Thanks! |

From: treewind Crofters at The Boot, Histon 1st Tuesdays 8:30 - 11pm Folk at the Portland Arms every Sunday night with Robin Gillan and friends. These are both in singaround format - anyone can come along and participate. Cambridge Folk Club every Friday at the Golden Hind, Milton Road. Format varies: typically main guest + support or open stage with featured local artist for last half hour. As well as the Folk Club, Ely has a singaround on Monday nights at the Lamb. I think if you contact the folk club organisers they will be able to confirm details. Ely folk club is guest+support format, but the site also has a useful links page Whittlesford Red Lion and Cherry Hinton Unicorn both have folk clubs which are really singaround sessions. The Unicorn may cease to exist as a folk club venue soon, so contact Barry first. There are music sessions in various pubs in Cambridge - mostly Irish tunes. I don't know how much singing goes on there. Mardles magazine tries to keep up with club and session listings in the area. |

If you go along you are likely to come across the formal set up - paid guests and open stage - and the informal where people meet just to play. From: IanC If you make it to Ashwell (just over the border in Herts) we have a nice little session (mainly singing) in the bar of the Rose & Crown on the 1st Monday of every month (it was last night) starting at 8:30 pm. Ashwell's a really pretty place to come anyway. It's about half an hour away from Cambridge by car and there's a station on the Kings Cross-Cambridge line (though it's a couple of miles outside the village so bringing biks is a good idea (or ring me and I'll arrange a lift). :-) |

From: GUEST,Lin Hi: Go this web site: Cambridge-news.co.uk I tried it and it brought me to this page where if you scroll down the page under Listings, you will find a heading called, Folk/Country and it lists all the current folk venues around Cambridge. Also, I have found that you can call the club and find out what bus to take that will bring you close to their location, (if you don't have a car). Most venue managers usually know this information. Or else contact the transit agency and give them the address of the venue for bus information. Some clubs are not always by the central part of town, and may be just on the outskirts but hopefully you will be able to find some to go to. |
