High Brooms Tun Wells Thur Feb 24th

It's coming around again quickly! The next High Brooms Tavern, Tunbridge Wells, "diddley diddley" session is Thursday 24th February from about 8pm.

The pub web site's still unfortunately corrupt, but this is an acoustic "anything goes" session with a mixture of play-along tunes, individual singers/ players doing accompanied or unaccompanied songs or tunes, both trad and more contemporary, plus full-on "sing-alongs".

The "feel" of the session's governed by who turns up, but there's a solid core of regulars who can be relied on to perform a broad range of songs and tunes.

No need to play or sing...there are always some people along purely to listen, too.

It'll be great to see you both there...really looking forward to hearing you again.

I'm still walking on air for getting up the nerve to do a floor spot at the Dave Swarbrick gig in Tonbridge on Monday and managing not to cock it up :-)

Don't worry too much, Rob - learn the words and guitar bits well, practice over and over live and up front at home - and then go and do it! Break a leg - but not a guitar string...

Thanks Will...it was last Monday, so already done.

Not 100% perfect, but "workmanlike", I think. Swarb said he enjoyed it (I did "Banks of the Sweet Primroses" on octave mando, and he said that particular song was one of his favourites of all time). And I had thumbs up from 2 people who would have told me straight if it was sub-standard!

The very idea of me playing at the same gig as Swarb seems faintly ludicrous in retrospect :-)

It's all getting up there and doing it- as often as possible (or so a bishop told me)...

@ Will,

I just want to give a small plug to Ian Chisholm here...just got my Martin back from him totally refretted and set up beautifully. He said he'd take a week to do it and that's exactly how long he took. It sounds great and those nasty soft frets that I managed to wear away in about 18 months have now been replaced with frets that will hopefully last a lot longer.

A great job, delivered on time, and at a very reasonable price.

Excellent Rob! I've just this minute returned from a band curry evening and he mentioned to me over the Lamb Kurma and Sag Aloo Bhajee that he'd done the refret for you. He's not doing any more minor jobs like refrets now until he 's finished his next two guitars. The first one in line is for him - and the next one is my parlour guitar. He has his annual exhibition at the Blue Shed Open House in Ditchling (part of the Brighton Festival) in May - and he wants both instruments completed by then.

He's a great luthier and, as you say, at a reasonable price.

Refresh....Looks as if Alan Day and Will Fly will be making their way to this one, so it should be even more excellent than usual. Hope landlord Roy has his voice back now...it's not the same without a contribution from him!

Well that was a really good one again, IMO. Lots of variety. Lots of humour and lots of contributors, plus a few listeners.

Mad-John-The-One-Man-Band was missing as was Jigging Lady, but a couple of newcomers really added to the proceedings.

As did Will Fly and Alan Day.....thanks for coming along guys. I really enjoyed all your contributions. A great balance between fun and musicianship!

And Bob's song celebrating 60s-70s folk-club "standards" by cramming lines from 46 songs often sung in that period into his own "roundup" was wonderful. Must learn it.
