Rog is home for his first Friday off. He will be working four day weeks from now on except in an emergency. I got a good night's sleep with the c-pap last night. The boot had been interfering with that, but we figured a way around it. I am wearing my pulse ox (thanks again El Swanno!) as a necklace as I have be quite disciplined and aware of when I need to breath more consciously, as in now when get to posting away and forget to take deep breaths. Funny old thing, that breathing. I missed the moon, Marigold. I think I was in bed.:-) I need more sun, maeve. Still just a little sallow from lack of...but, we've got clouds. 22 Feb 11 - 03:00 PM (#3100532) Subject: RE: BS: Kat needs your good thoughts From: katlaughing I have improved enough to take care of some bills and fold more laundry. I also had enough concentration to check out three artists for whom one of the housekeeping employees at the hospital played stand-up bass. His name is Rudy and he was just so sweet. We got to talking and found out he is a musician. Haven Quint flew him out to New England to cut a new CD; Peter Britt flew him to Nashville(I think) for a CD - I like the couple of songs I've heard so far.; and, Rick West also employed him. Quite different genres, there. I'd appreciate some extra energy/good thoughts along about 3p-530p ...that seems to be the toughest time of the day for me...waiting for Rog to come home. I know it will improve when I can have Morgan over again after school, but for now that is limited. I get bored and restless. I know it takes time to recover, but...:-< I am thinking about taking up crocheting again, nothing fancy, and we may get a cockatiel. Some of you may remember the one we used to have chiming in during Hear Me sessions. I miss that cheerfulness and the companionship, plus it would alert me when someone comes near or to the door. We're not ready for another dog. Anyway, thanks, again. luvyakat |

I think the cpap is becoming my "friend.":-) No doily for the boidee, gnu, the tiny fibers can cause problems as in get wrapped around their legs. I had that happen to a tiny zebra finch. By the time I noticed it, he'd almost lost his leg. As it was I was able to use tweezers and tiny scissors to cut it off and his leg was saved. I will sew a cover, though. We probably won't get the feller until we take the live Christmas tree out for planting, as a bird cage would fit just right where it is and would be out of cat reach, sorta. Meant to tell you, Sins, I had birds for years and learned to wire every connection shut tight and to hang bells off the corners, so any assaults will be heard immediately and water gun or can of pennies can be launched. These two cats know they are to leave them alone. We'll see how well they remember. Whew...got to rest now.:-) luvyakat |

That seems inadequate to express the gratitude I feel, but it's the simple best I can come up with.:-) It is helping a lot. I was at my reg. doc's for a follow-up by 830a and even washed my hair in the sink without help! An hour later, we went to the coumadin clinic, which was fine. Another hour later, we saw the ortho guy about my foot. I don't have to wear the boot any more! Full morning, but it felt good. Only thing was Rog pushed me in a wheelchair, except at the first stop as my stamina is still improving slowly. Now, off to a shower without gyrating about with the boot! Thank you, again. Perhaps it is time for a general focus thread for various of us going through things, borrowing from six years ago, an "In the Pink, On the Road to Wellville" with pledges to wear pink on those days when one of us may be having surgery etc. NOT to take away from their own threads, but to add positive focus in general. 19 Mar 11 - 10:09 PM (#3117337) Subject: RE: BS: Kat needs your good thoughts From: katlaughing Severn, somehow I missed your so kind posting. Thank you! At the risk of overloading the good thoughts capacity of Mudcatters, I would like to request some extra "In the Pink - On The Road to Wellness" thoughts to boost me up this coming week. I am to have a new sleep study done and a CAT scan of my lungs due to pulmonary hypertension. Funnily enough it was myself who chose to go to a specialist; none of the docs I've seen all these years, including in hospital most recently, seemed to think it was anything to look into. I have found out differently after a grueling four hours at the pulmonologist's last Friday (lots of breathing testing, missed lunch and nap, had to go get cat and take to vet after; Cat is fine:-). Anyhow, I'll post the times as soon as I know them. For now, I know I will be getting a new cpap or bipap machine as he said mine was so out of date we might as well use it for a doorstop! I'd appreciate thoughts of calmness and for my mind to let it go. Right now, right here, all is well and I am gratefull, but my mind is like a rat terrier; once it gets its teeth into something, they might as well call it Obsession!:-) Thank you, my friends. luvyakat |

20 Mar 11 - 10:41 AM (#3117539) Subject: RE: BS: Kat needs your good thoughts From: katlaughing Thank you all so very much. I had a good night of sleep last night, despite the cpap being such an old relic.:-) My mind was calmer, thanks to you lot, I am sure, and I did get an okay from the doc to take a benadryl which helped me get to sleep. I loathe the idea of the sleep study because all I remember from six years ago was tons of goop in my long hair, attached to wires and a tech who kept remarking on how he just couldn't understand why the stuff should bother me so. The doc, this time, said they've made it as non-hospital-like as possible. It is located in a hotel near the airport! But, I told him I am the original princess from the princess and the pea. I know this sounds negative, but I don't expect to get any sleep whilst there, though I will have my own pillow. No cats, no Rog, no adjustable comfort-air bed, etc. I am a cat and we do not like change! There, now that I've named it maybe it will purge and I can think better of it. I know it will be good in that we will know whether I need a bi-pap instead of a cpap, when done, and how to calibrate it, etc. I just don't relish spending a night away from home with a stranger, tied up to some machines.:-) The PH is rather scary sounding. Rog nor I remember the docs ever saying much about it until this year. We are both wondering why none of the docs, specialists included, and the ones at the hospitals just recently, never suggested a consult. I won't dwell on the past, but it is puzzling. Thanks for listening! luvyakat |

21 Mar 11 - 08:21 AM (#3118168) Subject: RE: BS: Kat needs your good thoughts From: JennyO I know what you mean about sleeping in unfamiliar surroundings. I'm another cat, like you. I'm hopeless sleeping on planes or other people's sofa beds or hospital beds. I like my own bed and my array of pillows, strategically placed to support my back and shoulders. Many of my friends will attest to my attachment to pillows - I'm known as the pillow lady. I try to take as many of them with me as I can when I am staying away from home - even managed to get a few in my suitcase when we went to San Francisco recently! Being comfortable in bed makes a huge difference to good quality sleep. Fortunately for me I've never had to have a sleep study - must be awful. Rob has had one and he says they are not exactly sleep-inducing. Still if it achieves something in the end, it will be worth it. Good luck! I'll be thinking of you, Kat. |

22 Mar 11 - 10:46 AM (#3119006) Subject: RE: BS: Kat needs your good thoughts From: katlaughing Thank you so much, my dear friends. I spent a good share of yesterday afternoon at the pulmonologist's. He is excellent and I trust him, as does my Rog. What he had to say and show me was rather scary, but he has some ideas of how to make it better. I've started on an antibiotic to stave off a cough getting any worse (caught from my dear, darling grandson) and three other drugs which are to help with pressure in the pulmonary arteries, which puts stress on the heart, and a bronchodialator. One of the kind of nice things he said was my lack of feeling like exercising and losing weight were not "virtue" things...there are legitimate physiological reasons.:-) I am working on visualising myself healthy and healed and giving thanks. At the moment, though, it seems kind of hard to keep the fear at bay. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I have too much to do to leave this all behind. luvyakat |

How inclined is anyone going to feel toward regimented diet and exercise when they feel like crap? When you are not getting oxygen rich blood to all moving parts like muscles, geesh it feels bloody awful just keeping them still. Working them doesn't bear thinking about. I am now reconsidering the stent for angina the cardio offered me, in the hopes that if it relieves pain and helps me get more O2 where it's needed then I can start moving and shifting the weight. But I am so scared. I did finally relent and purchase a wheeled walking frame with a seat. I was not going out at at all for a walk (weekdays or weekends) because of the pain and the fear of needing to rest and not having a place to sit. I hope this thing will encourage me to go out daily. Still sending my best wishes for you giggling kitty lady. |
22 Mar 11 - 07:53 PM (#3119403) Subject: RE: BS: Kat needs your good thoughts From: katlaughing The stent sounds like a good idea, VTam, esp. if it helps and protects your heart from any damage and.or your lungs. I wish some doc had sent me to a pulmonologist six years ago, so I would understand just how critical treating the sleep apnea is. I am working on giving thanks that all is in Divine order. Here's something which helps. You can put in the diety/ies of your choice or not: Prayer for Protection The light of god surrounds me; The love of god enfolds me; The power of god protects me; The presence of god watches over me. 03 Apr 11 - 09:52 AM (#3127579) Subject: RE: BS: Kat needs your good thoughts (Update) From: katlaughing Thank you, Charlie. I used to always say I give back what I receive. It is good to remind myself of that, amongst you, my dear friends who give so much, so willingly. The sleep study revealed a surprise, easily treated: Restlss Leg Syndrome, bigtime according to the nurse/tech. Also a mild form of sleep apnea and a form of REM disruption, so I basically have never had a good night's sleep in who guesses how long! Anyway, I have a prescription for a BiPap machine which will help with all of the above, AND should definitely help with the really scary diagnosis of the past couple of weeks. I may still have to go through more on that and/or listen to more dire docs' predictions, but I feel more able to cope and fight now. Thank yew, thank yew, thank yew! I am gratefull. kat |
03 Apr 11 - 10:26 AM (#3127596) Subject: RE: BS: Kat needs your good thoughts (Update) From: SINSULL There you go! No sleep = feeling like crap and eventually damaging both your physical and mental health. My brother's depression turned out to be at least partially related to sleep apnea. A word of advice aboyt the intake valve on your sleep mask. Do not put it anywhere near a sleeping dog with intestional malfunctions. My sister-in-law woke one night to find my brother choking. She immediately went into heart attack mode ready to do CPR, call 911, etc. So he's struggling against her and tryinf to get his mask off. High drama. The dog (a big old lab) had farted into the intake valve. Just a thought, dear. I am glad the news is good. Now get some sleep. M |

As well, one of my oldest friends ... and a fine fiddler in the Bush Music Club ... was the "laboratory craftsman" on the initial research, crafting in a laboratory sitting between Sydney University School of Medicine and the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. I saw the cardio for my annual, yesterday, and all is okay on that front other than what we already knew about. Saw the pulmonologist today - the guy who scared the bjeepers outta me last week. Now we've seen the sleep study, he sat down and explained his goals for me (same as mine, fancy that!) and how to achieve them. He was much more positive this time and Rog and I walked out of there feeling really good and very hopeful. Thank you, very much, for all of your aid and assistance. I know it is having a strong impact and I look forward to reaping the positive results as we go along. You all are wonderful friends! luvyakat |

08 Apr 11 - 11:29 PM (#3131697) Subject: RE: BS: Kat needs your good thoughts (Update) From: Stilly River Sage Information is power, so it's a good thing you've had the various studies done. What are you doing for the restless leg syndrome (or whatever kind of ailment it is considered?) Do you recall a discussion ages back, when it was suggested that (I know it sounds silly) a bar of Ivory soap under your bottom sheet down near your feet helps it go away? I've heard people call in to the People's Pharmacy on NPR and say it works. Have you tried it? SRS |
08 Apr 11 - 11:46 PM (#3131704) Subject: RE: BS: Kat needs your good thoughts (Update) From: katlaughing Thanks, folks. SRS, thanks. I was reminded by anudder Mudder about the Ivory soap, but it was for leg cramps from what I remember. Tonight will be the first night. |

10 Apr 11 - 11:49 AM (#3132454) Subject: RE: BS: Kat needs your good thoughts (Update) From: katlaughing The first night of the RLS med, I woke at 3a hurting terribly, I think from not moving enough. If I stay in one position too long, things get really tight. So, I got up and hobbled around hoping I had not done soft tissue damage to my feet the day before on the treadmill at the doc's. I was able to get back to sleep about 430a until 7 and it was a deep sleep so that was nice. The next morning, yesterday, I took the first of three daily doses of a new med and about an hour later couldn't stay awake and had a terrible muscle cramp across my neck and shoulders. Back to bed for an hour's nap. Called the pharmacist. She thinks it was the RLS med kicking in still; recommended holding off on it to determine which one was the culprit. She was right. I did not take the RLS med last night and only woke up an hour earlier, at 2a, with no pain. Was also able to get back to sleep until 7a. I don't really feel rested, but I feel we are on the right track. Will call the doc for an adjustment on Monday. My feeling is the BiPap will help with all of it, including the legs and, I hope I will be able to get by without any leg meds. The other med is much more important and I seem to be tolerating it well, so that's good. Thanks for asking. Hope that's not too much info!:-) |

10 Apr 11 - 02:39 PM (#3132525) Subject: RE: BS: Kat needs your good thoughts (Update) From: katlaughing I am glad to hear that, Sins! It should be in sometime near the first of the week, next. The O2 people know it is a critical, i.e. STAT, prescription and so will bring it as soon as they have it. NOT to make light of any of what I and many others have been going through, but I do see some humour in this (for me, at least:) The new 3x's per day med is Revatio which is an original drug developed to treat pulmonary hypertension...it just happened to have an unexpected, multi-billion dollar side effect which became known as "Viagra!" I've already heard one Mudcatter joke that my body will be so stiff I won't be able to bend. Not!**bg** It is good to have a little to laugh about in all of this. 21 Apr 11 - 02:34 PM (#3139802) Subject: RE: BS: Kat needs your good thoughts (Update) From: catspaw49 I think I found a possible cause for the RLS. Tell Rog to get it in gear!!! ScienceDaily (Dec. 17, 2008) — Persistent imminent orgasms in women are associated with restless legs and overactive bladder. This is the result of research by the Utrecht University and The Hague's HagaHospital. Neuropsychiatrist Dr. Marcel Waldinger and his colleagues studied 18 Dutch women with Persistent Sexual Arousal Syndrome (PSAS) and recently published their results in the Journal of Sexual Medicine. Women affected by this rare and mysterious syndrome experience persistent genital sensations as if they are continuously on the verge of an orgasm. All participants received in depth interviews and various medical examinations such as MRI-scans of the brain and pelvis. The study showed that most women in this research also had restless legs, symptoms of an overactive bladder and pelvic varicosis. "These results are a very important breakthrough in the research of this syndrome and show that this is a real physical disorder", Waldinger emphasizes. So did you forget to tell the Docs you are oversexed as well????? Spaw |

I KNOW it's going to be good because I have improved SO much and I am trying to live in the NOW, this moment and not get ahead of myself, but that little niggle of anxiety still comes up now and then. The changes have been fairly dramatic. Since starting on new meds and the bi-pap, I have done a lot of "firsts in I don't know how long" i.e. washed dishes, cleaned out the frig, pitched a baseball for Morgan, walked across the soccer field from Morgan's game, walked over an hour in the grocery store, swept the front steps and sidewalk, started a sidewalk/stair lap program...slow and steady AND played my dulcimer! Not 2-3 days before the meds and bi-pap, I was literally at the lowest I've felt in years and years. I am most gratefull for the upswing! Thanks for all of your help. luvyakat |

I have lost another eleven pounds since seeing him 12 days ago, which is good because it was water weight. He kept the scary stuff low-key today, focussing instead on the positives I reported and he saw. I don't mean to make light of something so serious, but I do accept peace and love, now, and so it is. Just 2-3 weeks ago, they told me I could pass on any minute. Good friends and family begged to differ and gave me the courage and strength to carry on, making peace with meds I didn't like and docs I didn't trust, at first. I am most grateful. I open my heart and send Love everywhere, but esp. to you, my dear, dear friends. Thank you, so much! luvyakat |
