Four songs from this CD were featured on Dave Eyre's "Thank Goodness It's Folk", in the first hour of the broadcast on January 28, 2011. The podcast of this hour is still available (as of mid-February, 2011) from a link on Radio Sheffield's web site.

Thanks Paul. Thanks Howard too, for those interested, the complete track list is as follows;
1. Spring Tide Rising
2. Stowe Brow
3. Glasgerion (Child 87)
4. Scarborough Sands
5. Judas (Child 23)
6. If I were a Blackbird
7. All on a Falling Tide (Child24)
8. Young Hunting (Child 68)
9. A Blacksmith courted Me
10. Davy Cross
11. Bendigo, Champion of England
12. The Thresherman
13. Tarry Trousers
14. Pilgrimage (J. Arrowsmith)
15. Grange Moor
16. A Rich Farmer from Sheffield (Child 283)
17. Jenny Storm
18. Captain Bart (Child 285)
19. Bring out the Banners (J. Warner)

Several of these tracks are recorded here for the first time. We're under no illusions about our place in the grand scheme of things folky so we try to record and perform songs that you're unlikely to hear anywhere else in a very traditional style.

Thanks John, we're pleased with the reviews so far…hopefully people out there 'get' what we do and understand why we don't do what they might expect.

Obviously not much interest out there but here's a review just in case anyone is reading this;

Paul & Liz Davenport: Spring Tide Rising, Hallamshire Traditions HATRCD04
This extraordinary offering is from a couple who understand every last syllable of meaning in the ballads they sing. Where the songs have any accompaniment at all, it is minimal, and where they sing together it is in unison. So here we have the very essence of the 19 ballads, every one gripping in their sincerity. Be brave, try it.
CWR 'Folknews Kernow' N0. 182, Jan-Mar 2011

The album is launched next Wednesday at the Hillsborough Hotel, Langsett Rd. Sheffield S6 2UB 8.00pm with support from a host of local stars. (see first posting above)

This was another review we were pretty pleased with, this reviewer gets what we do. Maybe its an east coast thing?

Paul & Liz's first two CDs were both very good and well received, yet this is even better. As it's not due for official release until early 2011, I'm not sure if it should be my album of the year for 2010 or 2011 – or both!

The album has well over an hour of playing time with 19 tracks, mostly traditional. There is a good mix of tracks with Paul and Liz singing together, mostly unaccompanied, Paul singing alone, sometimes accompanying himself on guitar or melodeon, and Liz singing on her own. It is these latter songs with just Liz's unaccompanied voice that makes this album stand out from the crowd. She sings amazing versions of Stowe Brow, Scarborough Sands, A Rich Farmer From Sheffield and others. Her singing of A Blacksmith Courted Me is easily the best that I've heard since that of Phoebe Smith in the late 60s or early 70s – simply beautiful. There are many other tracks that build this album into a most important collection such as a version of Judas, reputedly the oldest recorded ballad, and a couple of outstanding contemporary songs - Pilgrimage by Jess Arrowsmith and John Warner's Bring Out The Banners, which makes a superb final track to the album. If you only buy one CD this year, it must be this one.

What a night! Maybe not the biggest audience but some moments to savour. For me the highlight was the astonishing out-of-the-blue performance by 16 year old Megan Edgar. I shall remember that for a very long time as will others of the gathering. Great performances from Gavin Davenport and Ceiran Boyle too as well as two dances from the talented Maltby Phoenix Sword. Well worth the effort. Thanks to all. Album well and truly launched!

Many thanks for coming Ian. I really enjoyed myself despite a few worries at the start of the evening - don't know why I worried the team all played hard and the benchmark set at the beginning of the evening was so high we couldn't fail to have a great night. We'll try to get down to Mexborough again as soon as poss.
cheers,
Paul

It will always be a pleasure to see you Paul, let me know your whereabouts and I'll try and make it.

I remember bendigo, I used to box in Beeston in the early sixties and I remember a memorial, my trainer "Henry Hall" spoke of him admirably. Great song! I found the banner song very moving, lovely to hear the audience participation.

Take care

Ian

The songs all have a 'back story' Ian. 'Bendigo' is there because Liz used to spend time at Hull Fair visiting relatives with her Garndfather. The relatives owned a Boxing Booth. You heard the reason for 'Banners' being in there. Sometimes the back story only appears after we;ve learned the song, hence the note for 'Thresherman'. This is the trouble with downloads IMO, people only get the song, cherry-picked out of the album which itself has a story and context and then they don't get the sleeve notes either. The title track doesn't make sense without the sleeve notes which also expalain the picture on the front of the CD.
The audience were fabulous, I particularly loved the way that they eased Megan through that slight hesitation into a lovely performance. There were some serious names in the audience too I might add. Many thanks for your support
Paul
