15 Feb 11 - 03:56 PM (#3095901) Subject: Oxford Folk Festival Cancelled From: GUEST,Mike Gibson from the website Cancellation of 2011 Festival The organisers of Oxford Folk Festival look to create the best live music and dance event in Oxford that we possibly can for our audiences, and for the performers, morris dancers, stewards and all those who make it happen. Despite having booked a great roster of artists for this year a number of factors are making it impossible for us to hold the festival in 2011. In the current economic climate people are, understandably, more reluctant to commit their hard-earned cash to buy tickets in advance, whilst also costs have increased, with the VAT rise contributing amongst other factors. We have made as many economies as we can but with the increasing costs of venue and equipment hire, insurance and so on it ís simply not financially feasible to continue the festival this year. We really hope to be back in the future and, in the meantime, we wish to express our sincere thanks for your support during the 8 years since we started. We assure you that all tickets sold already will be refunded, and we will not breach the trust we have built with our customers and suppliers at any price. |

16 Feb 11 - 05:02 AM (#3096273) Subject: RE: Oxford Folk Festival Cancelled From: Ruth Archer That's very kind, Matt. :) Oxford did some really interesting stuff (those late-night club DJ sessions in the festival bar with Verity Sharp and Eliza, for example) and, of course, they launched Bellowhead. I, for one, really hope they're back next year. |

23 Feb 11 - 02:20 PM (#3101361) Subject: RE: Oxford Folk Festival Cancelled From: GUEST Isn't it heartening when people pull together! Although Oxford Folk Festival is taking a break for 2011, there's quite a lot folk in Oxford didn't want to let the weekend of 15th - 17th April pass without some tunes, songs and dances. Ian Giles and many others are helping to make sure that there's a reasonably organised series of events that weekend. If you want to keep in touch with some fast moving developements have a look at. http://folkweekendoxford.co.uk/ |

23 Feb 11 - 04:22 PM (#3101454) Subject: RE: Oxford Folk Festival Cancelled From: Raggytash Will you please permit me a slight deviation from the theme, I lived in Oxford in the early 80's (student days). Whilst there I met a young singer/songwriter named Lance, for a young man he wrote some extraordinary fine songs, very powerful themes. One in particular was a song called Miss McIntyre which he gave me the words for, another was "Fair Blows the Wind to Australia" a rollicking good chorus song. In the intervening years he must have written other cracking songs and I would like if possible, and with his permission, to pinch some for my reportaire. If anyone could put me in contact with Lance I would be grateful. If anyone has the words to Fair Blows the Winds, I can still remember the tune, even after all these years. Cheers Ra |
