Roots stuff in Ascot Uk now/soon

I normally haunt jazz & blues gigs but last night I made one of my rare forays into folkie stuff with the Phoebe Wright/Bob Fox gig at Jagz. Upcoming young singer-guitarist Phoebe was well into her set when I turned up, sorry to have missed the start- she has a clear pure voice & fingerpicks guitar. "Veteran" (ie much younger than me) NE England singer guitarist Bob Fox was excellent as expected and gave us plenty of chance to join in choruses. Tonight (17th Feb),the same venue presents Or, the Whale (named after the subtitle to Moby Dick of course) a "7-piece alt-country band playing everything from accordians to saw". Sounds interesting, but I'll be at South Street Reading for 3 National Steel players including Lewis Cohen.
Sonny Black's Roots & Blues, with guest Paul Critchfield, is back at Jagz on 3rd March (jammers welcome) and Artree, who promoted the Roots session with Bob Fox, are back with folk duo Hickman & Quinn on 9th March. I'll try to get to that, though I'll definitely be there the following night for jazz singer Linley Weir. Every Tuesday there is an open mic night that I haven't managed to catch yet but so far has featured a wide range of acts from blues duos to hammered dulcimer and hurdy gurdy ,and pianist/singer, Kelly Boazman. Slots can be booked at graham@jagz.co.uk. All details and updates at Jagz

Refresh before it drops off the bottom. Seems there's more interest in "What's on in Surrey" than in Berkshire! About 60 last night in Reading for Lewis Cohen & Stewart Cumberpatch National Steel. 7 Nationals on stage including, allegedly, one of only 6 remaining in the world with short-lived stylised palm-tree back. Next month in Reading (17th March): Paul Lamb & the Kingsnakes.

I enjoyed the Tuesday open mic last week, I'll go again. Everything from French chanson to hammered dulcimer & hurdy gurdy (Damian Clarke)via Skyport Ade's comic songs. The one singing the choruses out of tune was me. Also next week Sonny Black Blues and Roots club on Thursday 3rd March. Bill's guest is Paul Critchfield : Inspired via The Kingston Trio and skiffle in the 60's to begin playing, Paul was a regular at The White Horse Folk club in Reading where he hacked out versions of Martin Carthy, John Renbourne and Davey Graham songs, ending up in the early 70's in Blues Rock mode where he stayed for many years in the band "Blue rocket" ; a couple of soul and blues bands and many other diverse musical adventures. In the last 15 years Paul has regularly played for several ceilidh bands on guitar, bass, and drums; and an active member of Mark T's "root dogs"; "Scarlet Street" ( a blues jazz and soul band); a pub duo called "The Hired Hands" and for the past couple of years Bass player for "Clayson and the Argonaughts".

Open Mic as usual on Tuesday 5th May at Jagz, Ascot. - this week's Mardigrass bluegrass band were very good: even did a bluegrass version of Robert Johnson's Crossroads. Nest week's guests are Liam Coghlin band and Odette Michell. Sonny Black's Roots night on Wednesday 6th May with guest Bob Hadrell, the former keyboard player with the Dukes (& the man who had to work out what key I was singing in on my notorious appearance with Sonny B & the Dukes, nearly 8 years ago: most of the audience have now completed trauma counselling). Open mic spots available then as well. Bracknell South Hill Park Guitar Festival this Saturday, 30th April, still some tickets available.

Mind you they also said Leadfingers had been a folk singer since the 1860s! Should that be the 1880s, Terry? *BG*.

Roger - thank you so much for the time you take in promoting Jagz and especially the folkier side of things at the venue.

As I said in another thread - times are hard and audiences low at the moment. Things will I'm sure pick up, but it's really encouraging for promoters like myself to know that the shows are being appreciated and that people like yourself will take the time to plug them.

We're trying to get word of the events out to as many people, and keep the entry price as low as we can to get people through the door. We know the quality is always high - we just need more folks to give the events a chance!

Christine Collister this Thursday at Jagz (£10), Chris Ricketts at Folking Live (South Hill Park) in Bracknell next Thursday - 20th (£5).

Should be a great couple of shows.

Cheers

Phil

Sadly, the Salena Jones gig has been postponed to the New Year. Good news (for me) is that a monthly trad night at Jagz started this month though I missed the Vod-e-Oh-Do Orchestra as I was in Greece, also missed the Steve Summers monthly blues night. However, I'll be in Reading South St next Thursday (20th Sept)for Norman Beaker Band & Chris Farlowe and the local David Jones Band is the October 10th trad gig at Jagz.

Trad jazz with the David Jones Band 6th Feb & his Vo do O Do orchestra on 6th March.
The monthly blues club: 7th Keb Will Killeen and 14th March Sonny Black.

Phil's Folking Live sessions for Artree are 26th Jan, 2nd & 23rd Feb, March 23rd and April 27th. He may have some Jagz dates as well, but he'll no doubt post details here later.
