Terry Clements, long time guitarist since 1970, for Gordon Lightfoot passed away on Sunday February 20, 2011 from the effects of a stroke he had several days earlier.
The Lightfoot 2011 tour will go on as scheduled (www.lightfoot.ca) with a replacement guitarist.

A very sad day for Lightfoot, his band, Terry's family and all fans.

He will be greatly missed. I feel so sad for Gord and the rest of the band. He was a true gentleman, and superb musician.

Terry was a great guy and an even better musician. I remember watching him give a lesson to a young player in a bar after Terry had just finished playing a set with Lightfoot. The kid didn't even understand who was giving him a lesson. My friend and I sat in amazement.

I was very saddened to hear about Terry's passing. He was truly a wonderful guy, and loved to laugh. I was fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to do a recording session with him for Lou Moore's CD. It was so apparent to me how much he loved playing. Lou, I know how close you were to Terry and I'm so sorry you've lost such a great friend. To Gordon Lightfoot, my deepest regards, you've lost a long time friend and member of your musician family. And though he will be sadly missed by all, his music will live forever. To his family, my sincere condolences to you, be proud, remember the hearts he touched. May he rest in peace.

He became my step brother over 25 years ago and though I spent limited time with him over the years I will miss him. He will live on through the wonderful music he has produced. Miss you Terry.   Love Keith

I just heard about Terry's passing yesterday, and I cannot shake the blues that I'm feeling over it.

The first time I met Terry, I was just a kid who had eluded the security and made it back stage at Massey Hall. That was March 1972. Terry was new to the band and this was my first Lightfoot concert. He actually spoke to me, and let me see his Martin and his Gretsch. He spoke of learning Red's licks, and was so gracious. We spoke several times since that day, and he made a huge impression on me. I spent many hours learning Terry's licks.

He will be sorely missed by not just his family and friends for the person he was, but by so many folks who appreciate his music and what he did for Gord's music. My sincerest condolences to everyone who knew and loved him.

I remember meeting Terry years ago backstage at Conatitution Hall in Washington, DC after a Lightfoot concert there. We became instant friends, and we always had jokes to share whenever we got to see each other over the years. My fondest memory was an after-concert late night evening over drinks at the hotel in Crystal City, VA with all the members of Lightfoot's band and his manager, Barry Harvey, who was taken from us just a couple of years ago. My friend, Roger Henderson, another singer/songwriter from the area, was there, too. So much absolute joy and comaraderie...it was a great couple of hours. I'll never forget that and so many other times Terry was around. Terry, you were a good 'un. You're going to be missed, pal. Godspeed.

I had the privilege of Terry signing my guitar strap and he was very gracious about it. When I think of Gordon Lightfoot's songs, it is always Terry's beautiful guitar work that shines throughout. I will miss him terribly and I've shed a few tears. I will continue to cover Gordon's and Terry's fine music, with an extra ear for Terry, just for now.

Guest, Char, the original poster in this thread, has also posted a link and article regarding Gordon Lightfoot's comments about his friend and fellow musician Terry Clements, here: Lightfoot remembers Terry Clements

Perhaps the two threads could be combined and this post deleted.

I was really sorry to hear of Terry's passing. The only time I actually saw him perform with Gord was in Belfast in the 70s. I have admired his sensitive playing for most of my adult life - he is, and always will be, an integral part of the "Lightfoot sound". My thoughts are with his family and friends - especially Gord and the rest of the band - at this sad time.

I was deeply sadden when I heard about Terry's death. I always listen to his playing in all of Gord's songs. I had the pleasure to meet him in 1974 and again this past October in Wisconsin. He was a great guitarist and down to earth guy. I will always remember him for he died on my birthday, not to feel sorry for me but for his family and friends. I am sure anyone who knew him will miss him. He had a great sense of humor and zest for life. Rest in Peace Terry

Pam

I've been going to Lightfoot concerts for nearly 40 years. I always went not only to hear Gordon perform his magic, but to hear the beauty of Terry's guitar playing. Whenever I go to future shows and hear the solos that were performed so masterfully by Terry, his memory will always be a part of it. Thank you for many years of great music Terry. May you rest in peace.

A very sad day. I just learned of his passing on Gord's site. And I just watched the Reno dvd last night, start to finish, and I NEVER do that, I usually skip a few. I am so shook by this. I have seen Gordon 4 times, the last in Ann Arbor about or 10 years ago. Great musicians. Terry will be missed. Godspeed Terry.
