Exports

"With domestic consumption of 280,000 bbl/d in 2009, Libya had estimated net exports (including all liquids) of 1.5 million bbl/d. According to 2009 official trade data as reported to the Global Trade Atlas, the vast majority of Libyan oil exports are sold to European countries like Italy (425,000 bbl/d), Germany (178,000 bbl/d), France (133,000 bbl/d), and Spain (115,000).

"With the lifting of sanctions against Libya in 2004, the United States has increased its imports of Libyan oil. According to EIA estimates, the United States imported an average of 80,000 bbl/d from Libya in 2009, up from 56,000 bbl/d in 2005 but, as a result of the U.S. economic downturn and subsequent decline in oil demand, 2009 levels were below 2007 highs of 117,000 bbl/d."

Utilizing the good soldier's reasoning, since the that country is not mentioned at all it is obvious that Gaddafi is the UK's stooge, not that of the US.

I'd love to laugt about him if it wasn't so bloody serious. There is civil war in Libya though that expression does not fit it really. Most of the army and the police have changed sides and fight with the demonstrators. On Gaddafi's side fight a lot of black African mercenaries. Libya with its 6.5 Mio inhabitants has in the last years seen an influx of 2 Mio black African illegal immigrants. Nearly all of them wanted to come to Europe.

The EU fearing illegal immigration by ship to close-by Italian islands has made a deal with Gaddafi that he prevents these poor people from embarking towards Italy or Malta. They have paid a lot of money for that deal and, on the political side, to close both eyes to his outrageous antics. With that money and oil money Gaddafi pays black African mercenaries. They have the choice between immediate deportation to South Sahara which for most of them would mean death or geting paid as mercenaries answering only to Gaddafi himself.

These people who have fear of losing a well paid job and have no ethnic bonds to the aboriginal population of Libya will not change sides and are easily used to commit crimes from which the Libyans in the Army would shirk back even if they still support Gaddafi. By now, the mercenaries have an additional reason to fight til death for the Libians are so outraged now that they lynch black African mercenaries even if these surrender without a fight. The mercenaries in a very verbatim sense fight for their lives.

France 24 has usually the best coverage about North Africa and right now have some really graphic videos.

This is a situation where I'd wish for an outside force to act quickly. But I fear the only strong outside force near by, the NATO, would make things worse, so the only option, sadly, is to stand by and watch the massacre. Let's hope it does not last long.

Wolfgang

Truly sad.

I haven't heard from my buddy for over a week. He is... was... setting up the beginning of BP ops there. Like Ebbie says, the UK controls Libya. But, for how long?

Will Muammar ever have another photo op with Tony? I'll guess yes after he flees to his overeas retreat(s).

Just saw a report that said 400 now dead.

I feel for the Libyan people. However, this sonuvabitch has been getting away with murder for decades. What makes these last few days any different. We ALL knew and suddenly it`s a big deal. Sorry, but some of yàll lost me here. WHY is today any different than the Lockerbie bombing or the disco in Germany in the mid 1980s. And why did not more people suggest Gaddafi be relieved of his position--one way or other--back then. Aw, fuck it. Forget I asked.

Associated Press
"Few countries have as much at stake in Libya as Italy, an energy-poor country needing both Libya's oil and its cooperation in keeping potential boat people far from its nearby shores."
ENI (Italian) and BP (UK) are the major oil producers in Libya.
Saudi Arabia says it will increase production to help replace European supplies currently lost in the uprising but it will take time to work out logistics.

Now not only 'boat people' but productive citizens are leaving the country. Unless Gadhafi is removed quickly, Libyans will suffer for a long time (Perhaps his friend, Berlusconi, should also go quickly).

During Jan 1919 the workers of Glasgow rioted....led by well known radical socialists, they fought and won running battles with police.

The British government fearing a socialist revolution sent into Glasgow 10,000 soldiers, tanks, machine guns, and a howitser.

They were prepared to blow their people to pieces to protect the system and would do so again if the Capitalist system were to come under serious attack.

Just give a few thoughts to that as the foreign "monsters" fall

Not strictly relevant to the thread, but it has come up: BP was a largely UK company in origin, but is only approximately 40% UK-owned now, just 1% ahead of the next-largest, 39% USA. More extensive info here.

Interestingly roughly 1 in 4 of its employees are from the States, and just over 1 in 10 from the UK.

Good Soldier Schweik: "He has been a CIA agent, and American stooge/uncle tom for many years, he reminds me of Mussolini with his fondness for posing and dressing up."

Yeah, like Edgar Hoover, Rahm Emmanuel, George W., Baracko Baby

Maybe the reason Hoover wanted Lennon deported so bad, is because Edgar always had a thing for Brian Epstein, and Brian only hit on John.

I am surprised that USA hasn't already gone in there, just like Iraq, to get rid of him.

If they need a reason, then they could always say that Libya has a man of mass destruction. Better known as MOMD.

They might even con vince Britain to go in with them.

Technically speaking of course, while a tragedy is a story with a tragic ending, a comedy is a story with a happy ending, regardless of whether they are funny or not.

So lets hope that in this case, in the long run, Bonzo is right.

For hundreds of libyan families it is already a tragedy.

Libya has 1.5 million foreign workers, in every field of activity. Bangladesh, India, Nigeria are trying to arrange transport.
Farm workers are fleeing to Tunisia. Oil fields are shut down and news reports last night said Gaddafi has ordered their sabotage.

It will be a long time before Libya becomes a viable country. A very sad situation.

Just for now. putting all invective on one side for a moment.
Gaddaffi's time is over. He states that he wants to be a martyr.
Fine. He has no chance of staying in power.
Well, let him choose the manner of his going. Only a matter of time, after all.
Comfy electric chair? hangmans noose? taken out and shot like Ceasescu and his wife?
Whatever. He'll be dead within the month. Thus do all despots perish. (remember Mussolini?) And good luck to the people of Libya in the task of rebuilding their lives....
Right then, who's next...I vote for Robert Mugabe.

I think we are being a bit hasty to condemn China.
Are we happy about the "democracy" we have installed in Iraq?

Is Muslim fundamentalism ant better than secular dictatorship?

Do the people really know what they die for?

By Tommaso Campanella

(Italian philosopher, 1568–1639. Translation by John Addington Symonds)

THE PEOPLE is a beast of muddy brain
That knows not its own strength, and therefore stands
Loaded with wood and stone; the powerless hands
Of a mere child guide it with bit and rein;
One kick would be enough to break the chain,         5
But the beast fears, and what the child demands
It does; nor its own terror understands,
Confused and stupefied by bugbears vain.
Most wonderful! With its own hand it ties
And gags itself—gives itself death and war         10
For pence doled out by kings from its own store.
Its own are all things between earth and heaven;
But this it knows not; and if one arise
To tell this truth, it kills him unforgiven

Bar the issue of 'fair game', it's worth noting perhaps that making a monster ridiculous is also a potent tool to undermine his credibility and subtley disempower him. It's an old tool too. It might not make him less literally powerful, but it undermines his public image which is particularly important if that image is one he deliberately uses to intimidate the public into submission and indeed garner his forces respectful obedience. We see this strategy employed everywhere from Bardic sources fatally ridiculing ancient Irish kings in verse to WWII propaganda (Hitler was of course much parodied) to techniques used by applicants in job interviews. Apart from all that, the video is spot on an very funny. Pity the Libyan people can't get to see it right now.
