Good to hear that Andy Kershaw is back presenting a new show called 'Music Planet' with Lucy Duran on BBC Radio 3 (thursdays 9pm till 10pm). I do hope we get something like his old programme back eventually. A great world folk music champion has returned for good, I hope !

7 out of 8 safely stashed away on my hard drive! Nice to hear Andy back at his acerbic best! My conundrum is that the BBC can afford to send two teams of people around the world for an esoteric (nonetheless fascinating) series of programmes, but won't support a programme like Folkwaves, which is cheap as chips!
I feel that some of the financing of the trips would have come from TV. Radio doesn't have that sort of budget.
Nevermind, a fascinating listen to be sure.

His book No Off Switch is due out later this year.

"Radio DJ, travel journalist and world music pioneer Kershaw speaks on breakdowns, break-ups and broadcasting. One year Andy Kershaw was Billy Bragg's roadie, the next he was presenting "Live Aid" on TV to 400 million people.

He is a passionate enthusiast for music and a man with an obsessive curiosity about the world. Over the next 25 years, he worked for "The Rolling Stones", shared an office with John Peel, and introduced world and roots music to radio 1 (and later Radio 3). He also filed a lot of reports for radio 4, majoring in "The Axis of Evil".

Most recently, his marriage disastrously broke down, which led to his spending time in prison on the Isle of Man for breaking a restraining order. Andy Kershaw writes about all of this with candour, insight and immediacy. This is a real book by a man who has no truck with celebrity nonsense."

The Kershaw Tapes - Andy's Kitchen and On the Road in the Americas
Sunday Feature.
Now available on BBC Sounds; September 2020.

During the 1980s and 1990s, DJ Andy Kershaw travelled around Africa and the Americas searching out great music and taping it on his Walkman Pro, a new broadcast-quality cassette recorder that was bringing about a revolution in mobile recording. He also used it to capture his celebrated Kitchen Sessions, held in his small flat in Crouch End.

In the first of two features, Andy delves into his boxes of cassettes and brings us music from his journeys in Africa - including his encounters with the then-unknown Ali Farka Toure, and the vibrant music scene of the newly-independent Zimbabwe - plus Kitchen Sessions from Cajun musicians Eddie Lejeune and DL Menard, also American singing legends Butch Hancock and Jimmie Dale Gilmore.

In the second of two features, Andy delves into his boxes of cassettes and brings us music from his journeys in the USA and the Caribbean, including his visit to Cajun country, a session with the Jolly Boys in Jamaica, his encounter with street singer Ted Hawkins in Los Angeles, and his interview with Trinidadian calypso legend The Roaring Lion. Plus Kitchen Sessions with Cuban singer Celina Gonzales and SE Rogie from Sierra Leone.

Andy Kershaw - that takes me back. I remember a very wet and cold weekend sitting at the sound desk at a festival in Leeds 30 odd years ago. Great line up with the likes of Paul Brady, Moving Hearts, Georgie Fame, somebody called Derek Brimstone, Neil Innies and a joung compare I’d never come across before called Andy Kershaw!
