Has anybody been? I'm planning on visiting on Sunday, when they also have a concert by Tim Eriksen, anyone know him? Will post a review after I visit. |

Haven't been yet, but have other muso friends from down here who really enjoyed it, and have been looking foward to it. The Musical Instrument Museum A pre-opening review in the New York Times was somewhat critical of the way that the museum is organized, but regular humans seem to have a good time. :-) I'm really impressed with their programming of live music; have a few criticisms of their web site listings for it, though. Tim Ericksen is an incredeible musician. He used to play with a group called Cordelia's Dad. He has been involved in the sound tracks of several movies..I think Cold Mountain is one of them. He is also interested in promoting and keeping alive the sacred harp or shape note music, and other "old timey" music. |

For the first part of the concert Tim played a solo set, playing fiddle, banjo, bajo sexto and singing both traditional and his own songs. As Open Mike mentions, he has been heavily involved in popularising Sacred Harp singing in the US and beyond. I'm sure it will be a great show in the evocative surroundings of the musical instrument museum. However .... museum is great. Musical instruments from everywhere, all well displayed & described. There is an "Artists Gallery" (I think that's what it was called" where they currently have on display John Lennon's "Imagine" Steinway, George Benson's Gibson, which he used on his "big" album, (forget what it was called) Paul Simon's black Yamaha & even Clapton's "Brownie". The "Artist's Gallery" reminded me of the "Hendrix Experience Museum" in Seattle. |

We arrived just in time, so didn't have time to see the museum itself, except for the tantalizing orientation area with the ~20 kinds of guitars and the octabass (and a lot of other stuff). (not our picture: it's the only one in North America and pretty photogenic!) Definitely have to get back there and drag the son along. (He's commented that he's not into going and looking at objects, this should be a bit more than that.) ~ Becky in Long Beach, now. |
