01 Mar 11 - 03:52 PM (#3105148) Subject: RE: folkinfo is back From: GUEST,Jon Thanks. btw. I'm toying with having another go (I seem to have lost my last source) at a couple of small jobs some time over the next week. Any here interested in a snapshot of the song database (main songs only - I doubt I'd include the "extra" snippets we sometimes add) in abc format or as a pdf file? |
02 Mar 11 - 02:06 AM (#3105389) Subject: RE: folkinfo is back From: GUEST,Jon Oh well, as I've been awake with toothache for the past couple of hrs, I've had a first attempt at a pdf snapshot. There are some problems with it but it seems mostly OK. 7.2Mb zip file at http://www.jonbanjo.com/songs.zip |
02 Mar 11 - 11:40 AM (#3105655) Subject: RE: folkinfo is back From: Geoff the Duck A PDF of 1320 pages of songs with dots. There's a heck of a lot of stuff in there, Jon! Quack! Geoff. |
02 Mar 11 - 08:14 PM (#3105930) Subject: RE: folkinfo is back From: GUEST,Jon Hadn't realised it was that many pages geof - maybe I'll have a go at the dt one day! Anyway, thanks dave for adding the bulk of the songs to the db. --- I've added the abc downloads and put all the links on the misc page (which I need to revise some time...). The abc links will generate a new file if needed so should always reflect the latest state of the database. I can't do that with the pdf. The conversion job takes a couple of minutes to run on that server, plus I have to ftp the pdf file to jonbanjo.com (don't really want to tie the limited home connection with long downloads). I'll sort some cron job out for it another day. |
02 Mar 11 - 08:37 PM (#3105938) Subject: RE: folkinfo is back From: Janie Hi Jon. It has been long enough that I can no longer remember my user name and password and couldn't readily find a link to recover same. Can you direct me? |

03 Mar 11 - 04:04 AM (#3106040) Subject: RE: folkinfo is back From: GUEST,Jon I'm not going to keep this one long and there are some errors... but for the fun of it, here is a dt pdf. Be warned its 34Mb. Its using 2002 (has anyone got a later download?) version and only has the ones that gave a song file entry. abcm2ps says 7678 pages, 4546 titles. |
03 Mar 11 - 04:49 AM (#3106057) Subject: RE: folkinfo is back From: Geoff the Duck Hi Jon - just spotted a glitch on the Folkinfo site. I've left you a message on your forum - "pdf snapshot available" thread. Quack! Geoff. |
03 Mar 11 - 04:51 AM (#3106059) Subject: RE: folkinfo is back From: GUEST,Jon Thanks Geof. Should be fixed now. |
03 Mar 11 - 04:53 AM (#3106060) Subject: RE: folkinfo is back From: Geoff the Duck And the DT converted to PDF clocks in at 7,678 pages from 'Ard Tack to Zuleika. Quack! GtD. |
03 Mar 11 - 04:56 AM (#3106062) Subject: RE: folkinfo is back From: Geoff the Duck Glitch gone. Very quick work Jon. Quack! Geoff. |
03 Mar 11 - 05:02 AM (#3106064) Subject: RE: folkinfo is back From: GUEST,Jon Ah, I knew what that one was as I've made that mistake before. Apache needs permission to write to the temporary files I use in the conversions. |
03 Mar 11 - 05:18 AM (#3106071) Subject: RE: folkinfo is back From: Geoff the Duck I suspected it might be a quick fix once you were aware that something wasn't happening correctly, but it's the sort of glitch you might not spot if you don't need the conversion. Quack! Geoff. |
03 Mar 11 - 05:29 AM (#3106074) Subject: RE: folkinfo is back From: GUEST,Jon Yep, it's always good to be informed of errors and I don't think I'd have spotted that one for a long while. |
09 Apr 11 - 12:03 AM (#3131718) Subject: RE: folkinfo is back From: GUEST,Jon Here's another one for you Geoff - something I meant to try a while ago but... Anyway, it's very much in it's alpha stages and it seems to need the odd click in the left panel to restore focus to highlight the words as the tune plays but just about "tryable", tempo change, pitch change, work and it works on both Vista and the Linux boxes I have here. folkplay If you want to try... It requires a current version a of Java and abc2midi. Compiled versions of abc2midi can be obtained from the abc plus page. Download and extract my zip file to a folder. Place a copy of the abc2midi executable in this folder. Run the jar file. Windows seems willing to do this with a double clik, on Linux, do java -jar folkplay.jar. On the first run it will say the database needs creating. Click create and it should download and install the tables (actually a series of sql statements - like a mysql dump file) and the data from folkinfo (it's not enabled yet but it a future version should be able to check for updates and keep itself up to date). |
09 Apr 11 - 01:39 PM (#3132013) Subject: RE: folkinfo is back From: nutty Welcome back Jon - You've been missed I'm so glad to see that Folkinfo is up and running again |
09 Apr 11 - 05:53 PM (#3132135) Subject: RE: folkinfo is back From: GUEST,Jon Thanks nutty. --- I've had a few tunes on Win locking up with the compiled abc2midi from the abcplus project. I don't know why but my own (djgpp) Window compilation doesn't seem to have the same problem. I've included it in my zip file. |
10 Apr 11 - 02:06 PM (#3132517) Subject: RE: folkinfo is back From: GUEST,Jon still very early stages but I've added a major change to the above zip. Folkplay is now both a folkinfo songdb and a Digital Tradition database (old version..,) player, allowing you to switch between the two. folkinfo is installed the first time the program starts as described above. the dt database is added by selecting it in the database menu at the top. Again confirm you wish to add. The dt download sql file (currently unzipped) is a 17+ Mb text file. |

11 Dec 12 - 01:07 PM (#3450551) Subject: RE: folkinfo is back From: open mike YES, but this does not mean that folk info is back now, just that Jon said it was back at one point a couple of years ago. but maybe like that proverbial cat....that came back.....???? perhaps a mod-elf or mudderator, could add the date to the subject line |
12 Dec 12 - 05:30 AM (#3450849) Subject: RE: folkinfo is back From: Geoff the Duck This thread is a very old one. The Folkinfo web site has finally been discontinued. Jon has made downloadable versions of the songs from the Song Database they compiled. These may only be available for a limited time. He has also found someone who is now hosting the ABC Music Converter. Read this thread for information FOLKINFO HAS CLOSED Quack! GtD. |
