Now you've set me wondering, LH.. Are there any folk songs about cock fighting?

Well, I'm SURE the USA secretly supports exports toads to 3rd world countries to pass along defective sumo genes so that WE can be sure of dominating the next toad Olympics.

Yes, there's an excellent song about cock fighting, written by Tom Russell, and recorded by both him and Ian Tyson. It's called "Gallo de Cielo" (the heavenly cock...or "rooster", if you prefer). It's about an impoverished Mexican who tries to win a huge amount of money with a very fierce fighting cock named Gallo de Cielo...and he almost makes it to his objective.

That's very perceptive of you, Bill, to have figured that out, and I'm glad you brought it up. It goes right below most people's radar, I find. ;-)

Here's a new game. Read the quotes and guess who said it. Charlie Sheen or Charles Manson? It's not easy......

Considering our regular preoccupation with matters gastronomic, I am slightly surprised that I don't recall a thread on Toast Leaning.

Bill D... yes, it's been a rumour for quite a while but where is the money going to support the import and subsequent export of inferior toads? Where is the paper trail that tells us where the inferior toads are being obtained? We all know that the US toad is superior, as is it's cousin chronicled by Twain, and even an "inferior" Calaveras County frog or toad would be a step up... so where are these inferior toads being supplied from and then redirected in such a nefarious manner?

If you are going to consider olympic toads then the word spanghew may come in handy

Mark Twain wrote of a FROG, not a toad.

I don't think that the Antarctic "neutrino wells" have been mentioned Neither have the thermal spicules under Yellowstone Lake. And I'm certain that no one has pointed out the connection between manatees and the Magma People who live under the Earth.

Cheese rolling, is it just the South West UK that indulges in this foolhardy sport and are there any songs about this? Even more important has anyone here done it and managed to stay intact? Does the winner take the cheese home?

Seems like "subjects not yet covered by Mudcat" is getting close the realm of "Google Whacking"

Dwile flonking. I saw a TV programme the other day where someone was trying to revive it.

Dwile flonking DOES NOT NEED ANY REVIVING.

I dreamed I saw a dwile last night
As flonked as flonked could be.
Says I, "But dwiles have all died out".
"We never died", said he;
"We never died", said he.

I heard a story about a class in a physics course in Berkeley. A prof read aloud the first two hundred decimal places. Somewhere near 180 a student shot his hand into the air and said, "Sir, you made a mistake. The prof looked back about ten numbers and voila, he had. The student took it from there and gave the next 320 decimals places from memory. Seems he'd memorized the first five hundred.

I don't think there's ever been a thread about cup stacking, either, although it's a serious sport for some people.

"Schneeschlangen"? What's that - German ice worms? Maybe not - Click here (literally, it's "snow-snakes"). Alternatively, Click here.

999, I was really worried about your posting of pi giving me technical headaches.....but you did it with compassion, and it's fine. Admirable, even.

A thread of interesting but useless facts and trivia - i.e. A way to avoid Hyperthermia occurring is to hollow out a recently killed blood warm moose and climb inside. I am hardly likely to be in a situation like that but it might benefit somebody out there one day.

Snow snakes are a great and growing threat. There are at least 17 of them world-wide. You can tell when they're around because their venom turns snow yellow. I am working on an article about this wintertime danger.

"Research at Queen's University (Kingston, Ontario, Canada) indicated that the anti-freeze-like protein that allows snow fleas to operate in sub-zero environments may be useful for storing transplant organs and for producing better ice cream."

""Snow snakes are a great and growing threat""

What next? Another reason not to go outside.

Luckily, bed snakes become less lethal with age. At least there is one safe place for the timid. :)

Snow fleas no wonder they hop about brrrr! I wonder what makes them different to your average flea in UK ours tend to lie dormant in the colder whether until the warmer weather comes and then the pets have to be treated again!

Seems like they are not really fleas at all (unlike the true biting variety mentioned). But, they are related to the bugs that we don't normally see, that are busy eating decaying matter on the forest floor.

Other subjects not yet addressed on Mudcat:

The color scheme of the inner visions of Arthur Rimbaud.
Kipling's sexual preferences.
The mechanisms of cloud-evaporation by focused intention.

Many others come to mind, better left unmentioned for the sake of public sanity.

I tried out the cloud evaporation by focused intention thing after I heard about it, Amos, and I was quite surprised to find that it actually worked, provided I focused intently enough on the cloud in question and didn't let my mind wander or get distracted or bored. I dispersed quite a few smallish clouds into clear blue sky. That was back in the late 70s/early 80s It certainly raises some interesting questions...

I wasn't all that confident about it, though, so I only took on rather small and not very dense clouds...as I felt I didn't have enough "oomph", as it were, to disperse the bigger ones. I did manage to nibble away some holes in the bigger ones, but that was about all I felt like taking on at the time.

Then this Indian guy I knew said one day, "Why are you bothering the clouds? Why not just let them be?"

I thought he had a good point there, so I didn't do it anymore after that. ;-) Anyway, it was a fair bit of work in its own way, and to what purpose?

And I can just see BillD's mind writhing around like a snake on a hot griddle now. Heh! He can't stand this sort of speculative and unproven, airy-fairy, unverified stuff, stuff that hasn't been given the official stamp of approval by the National Bureau of Authoritative Science or the Federal Bureau of Bean Counters or someone else like that. He will have a very hard time resisting making a corrective comment or two about it to set me on the track back to reason and sanity... ;-D

Ed-

I'm not mature enough to watch the video.

I think "the perversity of inanimate objects" has been well addressed here at the Mudcat Forum, although I composed the definitive study years ago during a high school research assignment. I wonder where it's filed?

Cheerily,

It seems the perpetrator has already figured out that his thesis is on shaky ground cloud.

(What WOULD those clouds do if you followed wise Indian advice and left them alone? **grin**)

Now you want in impressive demonstration of mind power? Get some cloud to 'hold' in one shape for a few minutes. I'd pay to watch that....

It's in your liver, not your brain?

Your mind is there for more than merely making a continual noise between your ears, Bill. ;-)

I have no idea what the clouds would do if left alone, it would depend on a number of different factors, but one could find out by just sitting there and watching them for awhile. It is direct experience that counts in these things, because it answers all the questions that actually matter. As for the ones that don't, they're just grist for a restless mind, and there are many restless minds out there. Like Bob Dylan once said, "People got a lot of knives and forks, and they've got to cut something..."

LH... "I have no idea what the clouds would do if left alone..."

Ahhh... they evaporate.

gnu - What I meant was what they might do in, say, the next 5 minutes or so. ;-) That is, they might move this way or that way, at this or that speed, they might thin out some, they might thicken up some, they might combine or separate, etc...and that would depend on a number of different factors. If I wanted to know exactly what they would do, I'd have to sit there and watch them do it to find out. Direct observation would definity yield a more certain answer than theorizing about it...or calling up the local weatherman and asking him. That's why I say, nothing beats direct experience.

You could say that clouds evaporate, and you'd be right. You could also say that they form and you'd be right again, only at a different time in the life of the cloud, that's all. ;-) We also form and then we evaporate at some point. It's called birth, growth, life, aging, and death. Everything in this world appears to do that, although some substances (like gold) are very stable. If I may quote Mr Dylan again, "everything passes, everything changes".

If just about everything has been discussed on Mudcat BS, as some may state (not sure who these folks are at this point, but Bob Dylan is clearly not a suspect), could the BS mission be "spent"? Is it nearing the end (not intending to be a doomsdayer, not that there is anything BS'ly wrong with that)?

Or, could an ending be a new beginning, for BS to emerge in an altered state? Old BS does not die, it just evaporates, turning into new BS?

Snakes?

They waste your time
They're wastin' mine
California's got the most of them
Boy, they got a host of them
Swear t'god they got the most
At every business on the coast
Swear t'god they got the most
At every business on the coast
They got the flakes
Flakes! flakes!
They can't fix yer brakes
You ask 'em, "where's my motor? "
"well, it was eaten by snakes..."

Zappa... great tune.

So... more snakes?

Thanks, Bill. ;-D The fact is, I love to hear myself talk. And I also love words for their own sake, come to think of it. It's either something I inherited or its due to my spending my youth immersed in folk music, the wordiest of all popular music styles.

Has anyone done a poll on how many Mudcatters have or had a lucky charm, what they are and if they believe they bring them luck.

What about that old rabbits foot your father had on his key chain (as cruel as it seems today)? Did it bring him luck? Well, it may have brought him you, and associated luck in bed? Though it did not bring luck to the rabbit, (or cat)who once owned the foot.

Lucky charms
