03 Mar 11 - 03:15 PM (#3106428) Subject: RE: BS: Happy Birthday, Maine From: Naemanson Well, hell, Kendall, what has ever been free? Even in the first days of the new country we had taxes and oppression. Freedom was just a battle cry for the businessmen who were tired of dealing with an overbearing self centered government (British) so they installed they own government that quickly grew to be overbearing and self centered. |

03 Mar 11 - 03:19 PM (#3106431) Subject: RE: BS: Happy Birthday, Maine From: Naemanson By the way, most of my students have no idea what or where Maine is. They think it's somewhere near New York. I explain it by saying the Bible got the story of Genesis wrong. It goes like this: In the beginning God created Maine. And he looked on it and it was good. Then, he mused, where can I keep such a precious jewel? And so, he created the universe as a setting for the State of Maine. |

On the whole, I think Mainers are pretty alright. I also think there are lots of rocks and trees (and water) in Maine, so they almost ARE Canadians (especially in light of that island for which they both claim joint). |

05 Mar 11 - 01:37 AM (#3107272) Subject: RE: BS: Happy Birthday, Maine From: J-boy Sounds Aboot Right. You'll have to drop the Zed for Z,however. It doesn't quite fit our rebel colonist ears. But Mainers love the hockey almost as much as you do so we can make a few concessions on that point. Curling is still a complete goddamn mystery unfortunately. |
