BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever

My vote is for Pepsi. Dreadful sickly-sweet stuff. It could gag a dead squirrel, in my opinion. ;-)

If it doesn't have to come from a bottle or can, it might be the un-sweetened strawberry KoolAid the Army liked to serve, commonly called "beetle juice".

Anything by Nehi, but especially grape.
Cherry Vanilla Flavored Diet Doctor Pepper.

Does beer count? Because Lucky Lager was/is a pollution of good water.

Gatorade... nobody but jocks... or people with intestinal flu or those about to have an innuendo. Gatorade is good stuff if you need it.

As for sugar stuffed and carbonated or not crap, including pure fruit juices, saving cranberry or grape juice, why?

Even better: Guy says "I tried Scotch & water... got drunk... tried Bourbon & water...got drunk. Same thing with Vodka, Gin. The common element was water, so I'm gonna give it up."

I prefer water and/or Green Tea to most other drinks, but I am partial to various fruit juices. Barely ever drink any carbonated drinks at all, but I thought it would be fun to single out Pepsi as the worst of them. Even back when I did drink soft drinks a lot, it was Coke I favored. I really did not like Pepsi at all. As for the diet sodas, I never drank them by choice. There's some interesting literature out there about the chemicals and harmful substances that go into making them.

Coke has more... ummm.. 'zing'. I worked at a place that had only Coke in a machine, and I drank Coke there for 3 years. I just prefer Pepsi...though I ONLY buy it on super sales anymore. The price has gone thru the roof.(I think the 'regular' price has almost doubled in the last 7-8 years. If I want a cola, and there's no sale on Pepsi, I'll buy Safeway's house brand...or just drink iced tea.

I'd drink Pepsi before coke any day. Except with rum that is. For some reason Pepsi just does not taste right with rum or any other alcohol.
Short story, but to protect the innocent i was just an observer.

Remember those dispensing machines that you lifted the cover placed your coins in a slot then take the bottle by the neck and drag it through until it came to a holding area and you would lift and the latch (door) would pop up and you would take your drink out? Well they installed one of those in our high school and in a few minutes all the bottles were emptied without leaving the machine. A simple bottle opener took care of the caps and a straw took care of the drinks. Needless to say the soft drink machine was remover shortly after.

I eat fish eggs regularly when I eat at Japanese restaurants. So what's the problem???

I didn't mention milk, because it's not a soft drink. If we're going to mention all kinds of drinks, then milk (cows' milk) is my choice for the very worst. It's awful stuff, no good for your health, tastes lousy, causes congestion, screws up your digestive system, just generally fucks you up bigtime, in my opinion. I don't drink it. I find it ludicrous and tragic that I live in a civilization which tries to get human adults to drink cow's milk every day of their lives.

I read somewhere that the five countries in the world with the highest per capita rates of osteoporosis are also the five biggest consumers of dairy products--a finding that is shocking.

06 Mar 11 - 08:08 PM (#3108524)
Subject: RE: BS: Worst Soft Drink Ever
From: Q (Frank Staplin)

Factors influencing osteoporosis include amount of sunlight, vitamin D intake, protein, exercise, etc.
Recent research indicates that vitamin D helps calcium adsorption.

Directly relating dairy products to osteoporosis incidence is not valid.

Jack, you say that as if you didn't like milk!

Seriously, I love almost anything dairy. Milk, cream, butter, cheese, yogurt. I probably will have osteoporosis one day. Oh well, no soft drinks involved.

Ad, I tried some of the "throwback" Pepsi (sugar, no hi-fructose corn syrup) with Black Seal rum. HORRIBLE! There's an aftertase of licorice. I like licorice, but not in my rum & cola. Meyers works better. Anyway, the "throwback" Pepsi is less unhealthy, but I don't think I like the flavor that much. Luckily, I don't drink sweetened soft drinks very often, and usually prefer ginger ale.

One thing I once drank that surprised me by tasting pretty good was celery soda.

I always wondered what the soda was in the big bottle from way before my time called "Jumbo". It had an embroider(not sure this is correct to say. Maybe, impressed in glass?)picture in the glass of the bottle of an elephant and was called soda. I sold one of these bottles a few years back at a garage sale for $25.00.
I'm guessing it was a form of ginger ale maybe.

Don't know what you all have against fish jizz (aka milt) -- it is food to some.

From Wikipedia:

In Russian cuisine, herring milt (молока, "Moloka") pickled the same way as the rest of the fish, but eaten separately, sometimes combined with pickled herring roe.

In Japanese cuisine, the milt (白子 shirako 'white children') of cod (tara), anglerfish (anko) and pufferfish (fugu) are a delicacy.

In Sicilian cuisine, the milt of Tunafish is called "Lattume" and is used as a typical pasta topping.

I mysel have often eaten it in a marinated herring dish my mother used to make.

Cheap Panda fizzy pops in any flavour made as an affordable drink with youngsters pocket money in mind and small enough not to be wasted. The taste is so synthetic especially the bright red cherry flavour and it looks really nasty too. I haven't seen them in shops for a while so I am assuming that shops have hopefully stopped selling them.

Although not the worst I was disappointed with the taste of Doctor Pepper I thought it was going to be a lot different and would make me want to buy it as a regular drink like Coke or Pepsi but I wouldn't go out of my way to buy it.

My favourite was the 'old' Tizer in a glass bottle not the updated version that is around now. With Coke and Pepsi I find the plastic bottles they come in spoil the taste of both brands anyway.

Then there are Royal Crown, Double Cola, and Kool-Aid, the last being only useful for hiding the taste of water retrieved from the wells in rice paddies or the over-chlorinated stuff from water points.

The mention of green tea (which I can sorta stomach) brings up the various flavors of "white tea" now available. I had a sip once. Like decaf coffee, I fail to see the point.

Diet drinks are often sweetened with aspartame. If you belive what a lot of people say on the internet you'll avoid this additive. I mainly avoid it as I prefer sugar.

But for the finest soft drinks I've found in any country, might I recommend Fentimans.

History of Jones from wikipedia...

from that article: "In 2004, it offered a complete, drinkable Thanksgiving dinner—five bottles—as a box set for $16. Turkey & Gravy was brought back, and the rest of the flavors were unique to this offering: Green Bean Casserole, Cranberry, Mashed Potatoes with Butter, and Fruitcake. The limited edition pack sold out in under an hour, temporarily crashing the company's email and Internet servers. As in 2003, people resold some seasonal bottles on auction sites such as eBay, with bids reaching as high as $100 a pack.

I SAW some of those, but was not smart enuf to buy some for resale.

The only reason was there was no local market for drinking milk, we could only sell cream, to make cheese, ice cream etc. And, we had too much for ourselves and our neighbours, who also had dairy cattle.

Today, in Canada, there is a supply marketing system. Unless farmers have a milk quota, they cannot sell milk to the dairies. Quotas are fixed, and expensive to purchase. That keeps the price in stores controlled and high.

That's interesting, EdT. I've been drinking a whole pint of milk daily, sometimes TWICE a day, all my life, I adore it. (Full milk that is.) But I don't think people do nowadays, they just put a drop in their tea or coffee. In school, we were all provided with a third of a pint in a glass bottle (just after the War) None of my friends (of all ages) actually drink a glass of milk. Yogurt is very popular here, but generally 'low fat' YUK! I don't much like drinking fizzy drinks or alcohol, so milk is my 'tipple'.

I very rarely drink soft drinks now - too sweet.
Back in the 1950s I used to love tizer, it had a lovely caramel taste as far as I can remember, but either my taste buds have changed or the taste of tizer has changed, because after reminiscing about it recently I bought a bottle. It was horrid. No other flavour apart from sickly sweetness.

I used to know an elderly Scottish lady who couldn't drink tea for medical reasons so when other people were having tea she would have a cup of hot water. She called it 'silver tea'.

Only one responder named TAB, far and away and hands-down the most awfullest soft drink ever. NASTY stuff! The only explanation I can imagine is that too few of us are old enough to remember it.

Tab was one of the very first artificially-sweetened "diet" sodas and had the most obnoxious aftertaste. It was a Coca-Cola product and supposedly "the same" as Coke but with saccharine instead of sugar, but it really didn't taste anything at all like regular Coca-Cola. What it tasted like, I suppose, was saccharine.

Female consumers bought it for it "non-fattening" properties, but consumption of Tab was virtually unknown among boys and men ~ not at all like today's Diet Coke, which is very popular among people of all genders (especially software developers, who are apparently conscious of the sedentary nature of their occupation and the subsequent need to cut calories).

I must agree about Moxie. I wanted to like it, and I've tried twice, but I think I'm done.

I had a Russian blackcurrant soft drink that was fairly vile recently, too, but the Moxie was far worse.

Has anyone here ever tasted that six-pack of bottled soft drinks flavored like the components of Thanksgiving dinner? I'm thinking the turkey gravy one must really be something....but I can't say for sure.

I am strangely fond of Cheerwine, but that may be temporary insanity.

Well, I only like diet sodas (diet coke and diet ginger ale especially) because now the regular sodas taste too sweet. I don't drink straight soda all that often. At home my favorite drink is iced tea mixed with diet ginger ale - it gives the tea some fizz and zip. And I often make my own 'sodas' - seltzer water mixed with some orange juice, cranberry juice, etc. I do enjoy fizziness!

Eliza do you remember a drink made with lemon sherbert like crystals I think it was called Eiffel Tower, it had the loveliest lemony smell? The worst lemon cordial back in the day was called PLJ non- sweetened it was so sour it felt like it would take the roof of your mouth off. It was designed that way as part of a diet to make anything sweet taste revolting (I think!). As a little girl I used to dare myself to drink it and keep from wincing.

In 1967, the Pure Spring pop company, which dominated the Eastern Ontario market up to about 1970, produced "Expo Chocolate" in celebration of the centennial exposition in Montreal that I'm sure you all remember. Expo Chocolate was dire -- almost as bad as Swiss Creme Soda, another Pure Spring product, which was fluorescent pink and tasted of sugar and not much else.

Those were the only losers of the Pure Spring line. Their ginger ale was wonderful and I miss it sorely.

Tab Cola was my first experience of artificial sweetener. It was, indeed, vile. Fresca has improved considerably since it first appeared; the grapefruit flavour assorted very oddly with its original sweetener, saccharine, but is now actually quite palatable.

I ran out of soft drinks.

The two worst alcohol drinks I ever tasted was:

1) Green Chartreuse liquor (alcohol, sugar, 130 plants and flowers) Chartreuse

2) "Golden Glow" Apple Cider, (East Coast Canada, Hardcore Cider) it came in a big jug (in the 60's and 70's)with a handle on it, so you could chug from the bottle.

Testimonials from:
Golden Glow

""On my 16th Birthday weighing in at a hefty 135lbs I drank a liter in under an hour. I have never been sicker, I spent the night into the morning being hosed down in a shower vomiting violently. I broke every blood vessel in my face and ...pulled my muscles stomach to shoulder, I felt it for a month.""

""I was the only one of my friends to drink this steadily and not get terribly sick. They called us Glow Worms, we called it "Corpse Juice""

""bumwash""

""burp""

""I just threw up a little in my mouth thinking about it""

""bahahaha, the memories with Golden Glow... One Bottle would last me a couple nights hahaha! gets you drunk Off your ass... And a very ugly drunk at that""

""This shit was the shit. Unfortunately they dont make the shit anymore. Dammit. It was great shit while it lasted though.""

When I've been to India the soft drink of choice is a home grown equivalent of Coke called "Thums Up" (no "B"). Similarly unpleasant and almost radioactive in hue is the lime drink, Limca, which apparently was sold to India by the Italians when it was discovered that it was too carcinogenic for domestic consumption. Dr Pepper had its origins in the early 1900s as a patent remedy for constipation. The old labels used to display a clock face with 10, 2, and 4 in bold print. Those were the times of day you were supposed to imbibe in order to stay regular.

Now I like Dr Pepper, but the flavor that many people object to in it is associated with its supposed anti-constipation properties....prune juice.
