06 Mar 11 - 06:59 PM (#3108474) Subject: Origins: They're So Jealous of Me From: mucram Hi folks, I've spent a lot of time over the past few years tracking down old songs on the internet -- recordings/chords to play from, new verses to old songs, the lineage of folk songs -- and eventually I realized that most of the answers I was getting came from Mudcat. So now that I have a question I haven't been able to answer for, either here or through Google, I'm hoping that some of you can help me find out something about a song: When I was growing up (1980's) my great-grandmother had a player piano with a pretty large collection of rolls, and when I'd visit her I'd spend quite a bit of time playing it, or dancing to it. As a result, there are a lot of songs and snippets of songs, played extra-loud and slightly out of tune, left in my head from being exposed to that during my formative years. The one I'm wondering about specifically is titled (I think) "They're so Jealous of Me" and has a chorus that (might) go something like this: They're so jealous of me, oh so jealous of me 'Cause I make such a hit with the girls. Ladies all are helpless when they look in my eyes, When I'm on the street I have to wear a disguise. [. . . ?] 'Cause they're all so jealous of me. I think there were verses about being a cute little baby, and about getting in fights with other men. Ring any bells? |
