Lyr Req: Native North American Child (Sainte-Marie

Can anyone help with Buffy Sainte-Marie's "Native North American Child" from her "Moonshot Album"? I've got all the tribes down, but around the second verse she seems to be singing "sends a forty-niner up and won't change it" which makes no sense at all. Could be a liquor reference and I hardly think it's that in such an up-beat proud song about Native Americans and it still doesn't make sense. I'd like to play it for my daughter's First Grade class.

Thanks for any aid.

God Bless Everyone - No Exceptions!

look here under lyrics "N"
http://www.cshvof.com/buffy/

more about her and Moonshot can be found here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffy_Sainte-Marie
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moonshot_(album)

and here is her web site
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffy_Sainte-Marie

She is Canadian (Cree) and there the Native People are
called First Nations...she sings about Native North Americans
(it seems native americans would not actually include Canadians)

"who sings a 49-e4r autumnal changes"
is what that web page says, but then, again
it has a typo in the title and calls the song
Native North American Girl instead of "child"

As far as I've known, a 49-er is one who was seeking fortune, adventure or simply employment by going west to work the California gold rush of 1849. This can easliy make sense here following the line about pilgrims. But I would of course bow to someone who knows definitely.

I always thought it was "Who sings a 49-er rock and roll station"...but it looks like I may have been wrong. ;-) Good song!

I started with the lyrics given at http://www.cshvof.com/buffy/ (which is *not* Buffy's official site), and corrected a few obvious typos and misspellings. Then I used Wikipedia and tried to verify the tribal names—but it turns out someone who put together a video at YouTube has inserted the names as captions in the video. I wish she had done the same with the rest of the lyrics!

Verse 2 line 3 still has me stumped. I'm pretty sure "forty-niner" is correct, but I can't make sense of what comes after.

NATIVE NORTH AMERICAN CHILD
Buffy Sainte-Marie

Who's got a head o' hair to match up with the raven?
Who's got the prairie sun in every smile?
Who's got good credit yet with ol' Mother Nature?
Who? Native North American Child.

Who's got the rhythm of the universe inside her?
Who taught the Pilgrims how to make it in the wild?
Who sings a forty-niner ———(?)
Who? Native North American Child.

Sing about your ebony African queen.
Sing about your lily-white Lili Marleen.
Beauty by the bushel, but the girl of the hour
Is a Native North American prairie flower.

Seminole, Apache, Ute, Paiute, and Shoshone,
Navaho, Comanche, Hopi, Eskimo, Cree,
Tuscarora, Yaqui, Pima, Ponca, Oneida,
Native North American me!

Sing about your ebony African queen.
Sing about your lily-white Lili Marleen.
Beauty by the bushel, but the girl of the hour
Is a Native North American prairie flower.

Cherokee, Muskogee, Fox, and Passamaquoddy,
Winnebago, Haida, Mohawk, Saulteaux, and Sioux,
Chickasaw, Ojibwe, Cheyenne, Micmac [or "Mi'kmaq"], and Mandan,
Native North American you!

Thank you all for trying! I looked up the websites. Seems there's a bit of a mondegreen going on. "49er rock and roll station" made me laugh, Little Hawk!
Now I'm sorta inspired to make up something that fits. Wow, the folk process is alive and well in my kitchen.

Anyone have guitar chords?

Blessings.

The history of how Native American 49'er songs came to be isn't exactly clear, but they are songs sung after a Powwow...they have their own flavor to them, and often incorporate English words. One of my favorites is "John Wayne's Teeth" heard in the movie Smoke Signals!
