I'm an ethnomusicologist at Cape Breton University and I'm currently working on a project examining disaster songs of Atlantic Canada. I'm working on this project with a sociologist of disaster (Joe Scanlon) and an historian (Del Muise).

We have recently posted a website chronicling our findings:

disastersongs.ca

We have begun with a case study of mining disaster songs in Nova Scotia and our next step is to start documenting ocean-based disasters, including shipwrecks and the 1982 Ocean Ranger disaster off the coast of Newfoundland.

However, there are still many gaps in our knowledge. We know about some songs but we don't always having their lyrics or a copy of a recording. Or we might know the name of a composer but nothing much else. If you can help us, we'd really appreciate it! Also, if you know of any songs we've missed, please let us know. We'd especially appreciate your feedback, stories, and questions in the associated forum.

Thanks!

I have one about the Ocean Ranger to tune of Southern Cross..I think you have it somewhere but the words might be altered somewhat...I did graduate work at MUN and had friends who worked on the rigs.

I have a good friend in the maritimes. He wrote "The Westray Mine Disaster." How can he get the song to you?

There is a woman here who was a teenager at the Greenhill Mine disaster...she ran the telephone or radio. Someone should interview her. mg

Take note, those of you who visit that link. Access to the forum is by clicking the word Forum in the upper right hand corner of the page.

There are also some mining disaster songs there. Click on "Mining Disasters" on the right side, in red, and perhaps 999's friend's song is among them.

Heather, if you type "disaster" in the filter box, and set the time to "All", you may find a lot of songs. It covers more than Canada, but I remember quite a few contributions were Canadian.

Heather already has my song Westray Remembered. I think she found on Mudcat in the DT. If it's to me you refer Bruce, thanks!
