12 Mar 11 - 06:16 AM (#3112201) Subject: Tech: Speaker icon missing in Windows task bar From: Tootler The speaker icon that allows you to change the volume of audio has gone missing from my wife's computer. She is running Windows Vista. I had this happen previously on my old computer with Windows XP. You still have control of the volume and other audio settings but the icon which gives quick access from the task bar for some reason does not load on start up. My previous experience suggest that this is an intermittent fault but it would be very useful to know: 1. How to get it to display if it fails to load 2. Even better, how to ensure it does load every time. Presumably there are some settings that need adjusting somewhere? |

You can ienable or disable them by checkbox. see if some are unchecked. Have a think before disabling any though. I put a volume control icon on my desktop. Not as immediate but at least it gets the job done. On one of our Radio Station computers the icon is missing so I will be looking at the answers herein. |

12 Mar 11 - 11:04 AM (#3112360) Subject: RE: Tech: Speaker icon missing in Windows task bar From: JohnInKansas Since Vista arbitrarily and irrationally renamed everything in order to be more "idiot friendly" I'm unable to find a place to follow any of the above suggestions in mine. IF you can find a "blank area" on the Startup bar where the volume icon should be, and right click it and click "Properties," the popup may have a "Notification Area" tab. There is a check box at "Icons" to "Hide inactive icons." UNCHECK that box. In the "System icons" there is an instruction to "Select which system icons to always show" where you'll probably want to CHECK "Clock" and "Volume" - if they appear there. The default setup doesn't check the "always show" box for "Volume" or the "Hide inactive icons" box. With volume unchecked in the always show box, and with "hide inactive" checked, the volume control can easily slip out of view. Another obnoxious "feature" more often encountered in Vista is the offer to "remove unused icons" from the desktop, which can fairly often make things disappear there. (It's in a "feature" called "Desktop Cleanup," I believe.) If (or maybe one might say "when") that happens, the shortcuts should be saved in a folder called "saved icons" or "removed icons" or something similar so that you can put them back easily if you can find the $!%@@#% folder. (The folder usually disappears, or is never created, unless you've had an "accidental dissapearance.") An icon appears in the Startup Bar (usually lower right) if a shortcut to the program appears in a "Startup" folder. An icon apears in the Quick Start Bar (usually lower left) if a shortcut to the program appears in a "Start" folder. Unfortunately, there can be dozens of each of the above folders - Start or Startup - on a machine, and they're all "sytem" folders that won't appear in Windows Explorer (or in any search results) unless you turn off the "hide hidden and system files" in Control Panel - which is now located somewhere indiscernible among the "clever new meaningful-only-to-the-brain-impaired names" used for everything in Vista Control Panel. To remedy all I did was to right click on right-hand side of task bar. Click on Properties and then select "Notifications". There you will see various items that can be notified on Start-up. One of these is Volume. Worked for me. By the way this was in Vista. Cheers MikeL2 |
