What maximum download speeds are being achieved by folks these days for bit torrent file sharing with non fibre optic internet connections? I know there is a big differential between fibre optic and other internet connections as I never get more than 380kbps on our BT broadband wireless connection, whereas a neighbour gets up to 1500kbps using his fibre optic connection - considerably quicker!!

I download a lot of folk progs that are on TheBox.bz mainly courtesy of McD's or Pret on The Cloud. However the speed of downloading really depends upon the speed of individual servers in the swarm releasing bytes requested, and also the number of servers in the swarm itself. It also depends upon the load and speed of the tracking server. The speed of the connection that the leaching server (recipient / computer doing the downloading) is not that critical. You can check this using the Speed tab. BTW I use uTorrent in preference to BitTorrent. uTorrent seems to be faster. Info. of how all this works can be found on Wiki - in more than great detail.

Fibre optic may well be expected to be quicker - after all the bandwidth there is technically possibly many times that of 'wireless' - because you can only, according to 'Shannon', stuff so much content into a transmission medium depending on the 'native bandwidth' - wireless has a 'frequency' of the possible 'on and off bits' that is orders of magnitude lower than that of visible light due to the relative 'frequencies of the possible on and off bits in a given period of time' - ie the wavelength/frequency.
