I got that at the following site http://www.andyirvine.com/disc/sweeney-disc-new.html There is an mp3 version of it there. [A]I Shipped on board off a [E]Liverpool [A]liner Way [E]hey [A]roll [E7]and [A]go And we rolled all [D]night And we [E]rolled all[A] day For to[A] spend our money along with [E]sally [A]brown Sally Brown is a nice young lady Way hay roll and go And we rolled all night And we rolled all day For to spend my money along with sally brown She's tall and she's dark and she's not too shady Way hay roll and go And we rolled all night And we rolled all day For to spend my money along with sally brown Her mother doesn't like no tarry sailor Way hay roll and go And we rolled all night And we rolled all day For to spend my money along with sally brown She once had to marry a one legged captain Way hay roll and go And we rolled all night And we rolled all day For to spend our money along with sally brown Sally wouldn't marry me so I shipped across the water Way hay roll and go And we rolled all night And we rolled all day For to spend our money along with sally brown And now I am courting Sally's daughter Way hay roll and go And we rolled all night And we rolled all day For to spend our money along with sally brown. I shipped off board a Liverpool liner Way hey roll and go And we rolled all night And we rolled all day For to spend our money along with sally brown |

15 Mar 11 - 08:15 PM (#3114600) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sally Brown (as sung by Andy Irvine) From: GUEST,Ghirotondo Thank you very much, this is exactly the version I was looking for. I don't know if the same song has also a different title, I was listening at the Planxty version and I would like to sing it, but the only lyrics I found lacked two verses compared with Andy's. Thanks again. Lanfranco. |
15 Mar 11 - 08:16 PM (#3114601) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sally Brown (as sung by Andy Irvine) From: Gibb Sahib Lanfranco-- I know you asked for Andy Irvine's version. :) But my 2 cents -- Keep open to creating your own. There is nothing special that I see about Irvine's *lyrics*, and the trick of the shanty game is to invent your own or pick and choose from the best. Also (more unsolicited opinion) the "spend my money along with Sally Brown" is somewhat irksome because all evidence (there's plenty of it) indicates the traditional chorus was "spend my money ON Sally Brown." The "along with" lyric seems to be a bowdlerization to take the edge off of the reality of the singer's relationship with Sally Brown!...the "bright mulatter" that "chaws tobaccy" and sells rum. |

But English not being my mother tongue, I refrain to tamper with songs I like (I already had my fair share of nonsense while speaking or writing in a language which is not mine...) And I agree also about the "sweetened" version of some bawdy verses, could easily be. Thank you, have a good time! Lanfranco |
