The blurb and accompanying information on those shanties is worth the price alone.

Orders now coming in from accross the globe! Hopefully we'll get some CDs across to Mystic Seaport with Martin & Shan. What we'd really like to do at Mystic some time is the full Short Sharp Shanties presentation about his life & times & shanties!

I read somewhere the CD launch in Watchet is this Tuesday the 24th at the Esplanade Club in Watchet, from 9pm to midnight, and entry is free, but when we rang the Esplanade Club they said the evening started at 7.30 and they didn't know what time this show would actually start. Does anyone know any more about it than this? Tom and Barbara Brown were mentioned but we don't know how to contact them.

Hmm. Nevermind. We tracked down Barbara Brown and she sent us a message saying that this event is by invitation only and they are already full up. Oh well.... I guess that's ONE way to have a CD launch :(

Also, we can't go to the Chippenham one, because we're already committed to going to Bude Festival next weekend. Can't be everywhere *sigh*

Snuffy - you could if we had them there to sell - or even if we were there ourselves! We'll be [are] Hunting the Earl of Rone (except for a brief launch @ Chippenham FF). If you download the order form from the umbermusic.co.uk website before the end of the wekend, you can still get it at the pre-order/launch price of £10.99 +P&P. After that the offer stops and it's a pound more [we've got to get the costs back into the S&A Projects fund so we can do more stuff!].

KathyW - God bless the international postal services - hope you enjoy.

We had a Tremendous launch at Watchet on the 24th - real hairs on the neck job when you're rehearsing songs and a statue of the man who sang them to Cecil Sharp nearly a hundred years ago is sitting 20 yards away through the window looking back over his shoulder at you!

Nice launch at Chippenham too - although we'd lost Jackie Oates to the Nic Jones concert on the South Bank. Why, oh why, did they have to pick the same weekend as Chippenham FF's 40 anniversary? - a lot of people torn and a lot of people disappointed.

I had a little problem buying all three of these CDs in the U.S., although I know that CAMSCO carries them. I bought on CD from Jeff Warner when he came through on a house concert, and another from Keith Kendrick. I was missing Volume 2, so I downloaded it from emusic.com. The album notes are available from Wild Goose Records.

I found a very nice page with the biography of John Short [aka "Yankee Jack"] at www.everythingexmoor.org.uk

Reinhard Zierke has lots of information on the Short Sharp Shanties Project

Seems to me that Cecil Sharp's transcripts of John Short's singing should be available somewhere. Can anybody direct me to them? Seems to me most of them must be in Sharp's English Folk-Chanteys, but I'm not sure.

Joe,

The "transcripts," as I've understood it, are the original manuscripts.

The renditions of chanties collected in these manuscripts were used by Sharp to make up the versions he (Sharp) presented in the 1914 work you mentioned, as well as one or more (can't remember) that went into RR Terry's collection. Not all of the collected Short renditions (i.e. as represented in the manuscripts) were used for those collections, though most were. It is important to note, too, that they were often used as part of a synthesis of different individual's renditions to create the published version. In practical terms, Sharp, for example, might have presented the melody and a verse sung by Joe Blow Seaman and then tacked on a verse or two from the Short rendition.

According to my analysis, the Short chanty items in the manuscripts (i.e. judging from the content of the CDs) that did not make it into Sharp's English Folk-Chanteys or into Terry's work are:

NEW YORK GIRLS
SACRAMENTO
WHISKEY JOHNNY
DIXIE'S LAND
CLEAR THE TRACK
GOODBYE FARE YE WELL
LOWLANDS AWAY
PADDY ON THE RAILWAY
REUBEN RANZO
ROSABELLA
(The titles are generic ones I use...I can't be bother just now to locate Sharp's idiosyncratic titles.)

So, one will find notations of most of the other chanties from the CDs in English Folk-Chanteys. Incidentally, in some cases, Stan Hugill also reproduced versions presented by Sharp, if they were appreciably different from those familiar to him.

FWIW I have noticed that English Folk-Chanteys was not much utilized (relatively speaking) by the early Revival singers in constructing their renditions. One good, possible reason, is that the versions it contains did not supply enough verses for a performance. RR Terry, Joanna Colcord, etc, remedied this by combining verses from multiple sources, and so their collection were more handy. The effect of this is that to people steeped in particular established Revival "versions," renditions based in the John Short manuscripts sound "different/new"--regardless of whether they are being pulled from the archive or whether they have been in print for almost 100 years.

All 3 can now be bought as a package for £30:00, as well as indiviually from Wild Goose Records - or from Keith Kendrick, Jeff Warner, Tom & Barbara Brown.

The whole recording project worked from the copies of Sharp's original notebooks at the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library at Cecil Sharp House, London. He didn't publish them all. Short didn't give him too many verses - see the comprehensive notes on the website (umbermusic.co.uk), it'll save a lot of time and speculation!

I'm very nearly persuaded to publish all Short's versions in the forthcoming book on Short's life and times - or may do it as a companion volume.

In the meantime there are just two more opportunities to see the Short Sharp Shanties Show (I have to say it early in the evening!) with Jackie Oates, Jeff Warner, Keith Kendrick, me and the missus and Doug Bailey before Jeff flies home for Thanksgiving. They are at QUAD, Derby, on the 18th November and at Nettlebed Village Hall, Oxfordshire, on the 19th November. Details on the website. The show's been exceptionally well received although goodness knows if we'll get round to doing it again - there have been a couple of enquiries for festivals in 2013,so we'll see.

Thanks you for all the nice things people have been saying abpout the project, the recordings and the shows - it makes life feel worthwhile!

Sciencegeek, yes, you can get any of the three CDs individually, either from Umber music (see the blue clicky thing in the posting from me in disguise as Guest above on 17/03/2011 or from WildGoose Studios, see the blue clicky thing on Joe Offer's posting on 16/10/12 (hi Joe).

Cheers everyone - just over 3 hours to go before the performance in Derby at Quad.
