Michael Gough, best known for playing Alfred the butler in several 'Batman' movies, has died. He was 94.

Gough passed away early Thursday morning at home with his family.

Born in 1916, the BAFTA-winning star began acting in the 1940s. He went on to appear in more than 150 films and TV shows during his 65-year career, including 1967's 'Pride and Prejudice', 'Doctor Who' and several Hammer horror movies.

Known for playing villains in his early years as an actor, he was once described as "the cheaper version of Vincent Price". As he got older he was often cast as a distinguished British gentleman.

He first played the role of the Caped Crusader's right hand man in 1989's 'Batman'. He reprised the role in three more films afterwards.

Gough was one of Tim Burton's regulars. He starred in 'Sleepy Hollow', 'Corpse Bride' and performed the voice of Dodo Bird in last year's 'Alice in Wonderland'.

Other notable screen credits include 'Out of Africa' and 'The Age of Innocence'.

My wife and I have been addicted to British dramas, often costurme dramas, as presented on "Masterpiece Theatre" for many years. We were familiar with Michael Gough long before he appeared as Alfred in "Batman." Good, solid actor. We're sorry to hear that he's gone.

I seem to recall Joan Crawford putting an axe through his head in 'Berserk' a sort of circus movie.
He always seemed to epitomise that certain 'Englishness'
RIP Mr.Gough

From The Times obituary, when Gough played the Prime Minister, Anthony Eden, in a big TV dramatisation of the Suez crisis:

"Sir Anthony Nutting, Eden’s Minister of State at the Foreign Office, drily observed: 'Michael Gough acting Eden has made a much better case for Suez than Eden ever made for himself.'"

I primarily remember Michael Gough from a bunch of horror films made by Hammer (and other studios), years before I was aware of his other roles.

And the "killer stalks the circus" film that fat B****rd mentioned earlier was Berserk from 1967, and it also featured Judy Geeson, Diana Dors and Ty Hardin. As I recall, Gough was leaning against a large wooden post (with a knothole or something similar in it) when a large spike was hammered through it from behind, impaling him through the forehead. Was the murderer Joan Crawford, getting her revenge for agreeing to star in this film?

I'll never tell...

That's another of the good ones gone...RIP

On a folkie note, Michael did a reading on "The Complete Dancing Master" by Ashley Hutchings and John Kirkpatrick. He read an extract from "The Analysis of Beauty" by William Hogarth - beautifully.

Well worth getting hold of that album, because apart from the music, which is great, there are other readings by respected actors. The star turn IMHO is a piece fom "Sketches by Boz" read by the wonderful Michael Hordern. Apparently the fee paid for a fishing trip which he postponed!
