I want to use something a bit better than the basic music player that comes with the package from my web host. Most of them want to link to a URL for the sound file they will be playing, which is fair enough. However, the online file storage sites I've looked at don't seem to provide direct URL links to the sound files you upload - most of them seem to provide download links or to be set up to share via email etc. What I'd ideally like to find is something like Photobucket, but for music files. I have an account with Soundcloud, but it only lets you upload a relatively small amount of music before it starts to get quite pricey - and I'd be paying for features I don't need. Does anyone have any suggestions? I've tried MediaFire and SteekR but I don't seem to be getting anywhere... Thanks in advance for any suggestions. |

The free account lets you upload up to 2hrs playing time and puts no restriction on the file size so you can upload files that are are either uncompressed or use lossless compression. I believe they convert these to mp3 for the online player, but if you make the files downloadable they will download in the format you uploaded. I used Soundcloud to send files for the Mudcat CD. The 2hr limit is equivalent to 2 CDs (say ~40 tracks) which I feel is quite reasonable. It's certainly much more generous than myspace music which, IIRC, limits you to 8 tracks. 29 Euros a year (~20 pounds) gets you an extra 2hrs, though if I start to get close to the 2hr free limit, I would probably look to start replacing tracks. After that, I agree it does start to ramp up somewhat, but then, so does the time allowance - even more so. Another possibility is You Tube. You don't need to produce fancy videos. Simple slide shows or even just one image is fine and they give you a link for embedding the player in your website. It all depends what you are wanting to use the online storage for. Is it just for convenient storage, to transfer files or to showcase your music? If its for storage, then a better option might be to buy an external hard drive Around 60GBP will get a 1TB USB hard drive. If its for file transfer, then do you really need a player? Anyway, most storage sites have some sort of limit. If it's to showcase your music then online storage sites do not seem the most appropriate type of site anyway. Try this site which has links to a number of music hosting sites together with a brief review of many of them. |

There are some 'Catters on Soundclick and they will be able to tell you more. I tried to sign up for Soundclick but the confirmation email went astray and I never followed it up. SoundCloud suits me fine for the time being. |
