"Adam and Eve" is the song for March 23 in Jon Boden's A Folk Song a Day project.

    A note about Adam and Eve

    The DT version makes less sense than it should because of the typos. Here are the 2 verses:

    Adam and Eve could never believe that Peter the miller was dead
    Shut up in a tower for stealing a flower
    And never could get a relief
    And never could get a relief

    They bored a hole in Oliver's nose and pulled therein a string
    And drew him around about the town
    For murdering Charles our King
    For murdering Charles our King

    They should be:

    Adam and Eve could never believe that Peter the miller was dead
    Shut up in a tower for stealing flour
    And never could get a reprieve

    They bored a hole in Oliver's nose and tied therein a string
    And drew him around about the town
    For murdering Charles our King

    The rhyme, as I remember it, didn't have the repeating the last lines either. BTW, the tune is supposed to be taken from the chimes of Christchurch, Dorset I think.

I found the song at Google Books in an 1893 songbook called English County Songs, by Lucy Etheldred Broadwood and John Alexander Fuller-Maitland:

    ADAM AND EVE

    Adam and Eve could never believe
    That Peter the miller was dead;
    Shut up in the tower for stealing of flour,
    And never could get a reprieve,
    And never could get a reprieve.*

    They bored a hole in Oliver's nose,
    And put therein a string,
    And drew him round about the town
    For murdering Charles our King,
    For murdering Charles our King.

    *possibly in the original this line ran "and forced to lose his head."

Hi Joe, there was a copy of this book in the auction just before Christmas I think. I remember bidding on it but did not get it.
Could you view the book from the google link?
It didn't seem to want to let me do that!.

Sorry Joe, I get the same thing with both links.
A picture of a generic book front cover and no way to open it.
Then "Related Books"
Then "Contents" showing the words "Section One" all the way to section 14 also with no way to open.
I am wondering if it has to do with a copywrite issue?
I would really like to see this book too, also another one which it links also by Lucy B.
