I recently saw Sara Grey (still singing clear as a bell) and her son, Kieron Means, who plays guitar in a way that makes me remember why I fell in love with the instrument. I am an avowed Martin fan, but the guitar he was playing was as lovely (if not more!!) than any Martin. I believe he mentioned it was made in Canada, but I forgot the maker. Anyone know? It's one of those rare guitars that has full bass but resonance all across the tonal range. (Of course his exquisite, yet spare and meaningful way of playing may have helped augment the sound.) Thanks. |

27 Mar 11 - 08:00 AM (#3122527) Subject: RE: Tech: Kieron Means guitar From: bbc I'm not an expert on guitars, but, having seen Kieron & his mom recently in concert in Hyde Park, New York, USA, I can surely agree that he plays it well. The concert was a true pleasure--vocally, instrumentally, & in the blend of personalities between mother & son. Would that all families were that harmonious! best, Barbara |
27 Mar 11 - 09:42 AM (#3122592) Subject: RE: Tech: Kieron Means guitar From: Midchuck There is no finer guitar than a Martin, no matter what they may tell you... It's true! Except for Collings, Huss and Dalton, Manuel & Patterson, Mario Proulx, and Nick Apollonio. (Those are only the ones I can personally attest to. You can get testimony from other people as to innumerable others.) True, it may be fairly argued that there is no finer guitar than a fifty-year-old Martin in good condition. But that's because very few (acoustic flat-top steel-string) guitars as good as the Martins then being built were built fifty years ago, and there's no quick way to duplicate the effect of fifty years of aging and playing on the sound. Comparing new Martins to new guitars by smaller makers is a different matter. All IMNSHO, of course. Peter |
