Bulgarian CDs Going Cheap

Passion Music have a set of 3 CDs of Bulgarian field recordings, recorded in the '60s by Yves Moreau, which are currently on special offer.

They are called "Beyond the Mystery" - Village Music of Bulgaria, and they can be seen at Passion Music .

The price reduction isn't great, less than four quid for the entire set. However;-

1. The discs contain some of the finest music I ever heard coming out of Bulgaria.
2. The fact that they are on offer at all makes me wonder if they're about to disappear off the market.

Either way, if you're into the music of Eastern Europe, and you haven't already got these, you will certainly want them.

Oh, and despite the title, the performances bear not the slightest resemblance to those awful apparatchik ersatz choirs which passed for folk music in the days of the Soviet Bloc.

Passion Discs list a lot of stuff I'm interested in, but I've never ordered from them because of their untraceability. You will not find a street address anywhere on their site (I wanted to pay by cheque, so I needed somewhere to post it). Whois info gives:

Registrant:
       Ian Morrison

    Trading as:
       Passion Music

    Registrant type:
       UK Sole Trader

    Registrant's address:
       37 Red Lion Lane
       Overton
       Basingstoke
       Hampshire
       RG25 3HH
       United Kingdom

But when I wrote to that address I never got an answer.

There is obviously something not quite on the up-and-up here. I suspect a tax fiddle.

I picked up the old Nonsuch Exoplorer CD of A Harvest, A Shepherd and A Bride on the same disk as In the Shadow of the Mountain for 50p at a car boot sale. Two albums but still only an hour or so, but quite stunning replacements for my old vinyl. Come Spring, I invariably turn to Eastern Europe...

How does the Passion disks compare?

The two Nonesuch LPs are absolutely breathtaking, as was most of the stuff which came out on Nonesuch. The recordings on Beyond the Mystery are very much of the same order. In other words, they are very highly recommendable.
