A.L. Lloyd biography - help needed

29 Mar 11 - 06:07 AM (#3123921)
Subject: A.L. LLOYD biography - help needed
From: Vic Smith

This from Stuart Booth:

Dave Arthur has written an excellent and much needed biog of the great A. L. Lloyd and it has been under consider action by Pluto Press for some time now. The Editorial Director, Anne Beech, is tremendously keen that the company sign it up, but is having trouble persuading the rest of the decision makers there that is is a an essential book... which we all know it is.

Can I ask you to join me in sending to Anne your enthusiasm, support and (above all) just how important Bert was and why Pluto MUST do the book?
Anne has said that she will welcome any such endorsements and the bigger the names/support, the better.

I am doing this in no other capacity than as an enthusiast. Feel free to copy this on too.....

You can email Anne at: beech@plutobooks.com

Please add your feelings to Anne that this biography of one of Britain's finest ethnomusicologists and a central figure to the development of the folk scene in the UK needs to be published.

Hi Vic,

Seen it. On it. Done it. Ms Beech is probably reading my heartfelt missive even as I key this in. Now, can everybody else pitch in and see to it that this book, the publication of which is massively overdue, sees the light of print at last. (As Bert would have said.)

I've just had a reply from Anne Beech, which reads

"Thank you so much for this: it will all go towards helping to educate colleagues here! I don't need persuading! But these young people ..."

Right folks. Get in there and educate the colleagues!

Ah so that is what happened! This was to be my birthday present two years ago from my wife and it has never become available - despite there having been a book launch at Cecil Sharpe House. I shall get on to Anne Beech and maybe it will be ready for my next birthday.

Done and Dusted.

A few years ago, at Whitby Festival, I heard Dave Arthur give a brilliant hour-long talk about his research into the life and work of Bert Lloyd. It convinced me that this book will be an entertaining read, as well as a major contribution to scholarship, and I've been waiting impatiently to buy it ever since.

If you aren't sure why we do need a good biography of Bert, just look at some of the threads about him on this forum. Everybody, please pile in and support Anne Beech now!

Wassail!

Hi Geoff,

Given your interest in the Spanish civil war, it would be helpful if you mentioned Bert's translation of Lorca, and his other anti-fascist activities.

Cheers,

Fred.

Anne Beech at Pluto emails Ian Anderson and says:-

Ian: I've had an incredible response from people all over the world - which only goes to prove my point, that with a book like this, if you target the right audience, using sites like yours, we can reach our readers easily.

Thanks for your support - the emails have been fascinating and heartening. I'm still trying to reply to all of them.

All the best

Didn't people lay down money for this as payment in advance of publication date two years ago? I'm sure a friend of mine said that she'd paid and was still waiting. If that's so, what happened to the down payments, and has somebody somewhere got a list of the people who are still waiting?

I've joined the fray!

Recently I got a copy of 'Shadow of the Swastika' a book based on the scripts of his (jointly with Igor Vinogradoff) 8 part radio drama for the BBC broadcast from November 1939 to January 1940. The series drew an audience of over 12 million listeners! The book presents a compelling history of the Nazi Party and was published in 1940.

Hi Surreysinger,
EFDSS collected advance payments as they intended to publish it but subsequently found such publication too costly (Did'nt expect so many pages). They have already offered a refund to those who got tired of waiting.

Thanks for that - however, I should point out that my friend has had no contact from EFDSS since the date that she paid money over at the launch, although had heard that some people had been offered that option. I think she may be happy to wait, but was surprised at having had no update from anybody about it at all.

Two interesting critiques of Lloyd by David Gregory, both published in The Canadian Journal of Traditional Music
1. A L Lloyd and English Folksong (1997)
and
2. Starting Over (2000)
Don't know if they are on line.

Both articles are online:

2. Starting Over: A. L. Lloyd and the Search for a New Folk Music, 1945-49

But beware that the scanned and OCR-treated text has not been proofread and has many errors, e.g. Vic Gwninon for Vic Gammon).

From Stuart Booth via Ian Anderson

I am just back form the London Book fair, where the Editorial Director of Pluto Press, Anne Beech, told me that she had well over 100 e-mails of enthusiasm and support regarding Dave Arthur's biography of A.L. Lloyd – as a result of which, the editorial board decided in favour of contracting the book after all!

So, well done comrades; and thanks from me (merely another by-standing enthusiast ) for all your efforts, etc.

It's to be a Spring 21012 publication, apparently.

Singing the century: the life and times of A. L. Lloyd, a 35-minute podcast from Pod Academy:
Folk is in vogue. So much so that in July 2011the folk scene's brightest young things splashed over the glossy pages of the world's most stylish magazine. It could be said, however, that without the efforts of A.L. (Bert) Lloyd, those floral dresses and lilting songs would have remained locked in the cupboard. Australian sheep farmer, Communist activist, whalerman, journalist, radio producer, folklorist, folk singer, Bert Lloyd was an inspiration for some of the richest and most exciting work to come out of England's traditional music scene. To mark the release of a new biography, Pod Academy brings together the author, Dave Arthur, and songwriter and journalist Alan Franks to discuss Bert: The Life and Times of A. L. Lloyd (Pluto Press, 2012).

With thanks to Veteran Records, Topic Records, Fellside Recordings, the Cecil Sharp House Community Choir, and the English Folk Dance and Song Society.

Written and produced by Alex Bingham.

Thanks to EFDSS on Facebook for the heads up. Listening now. (And Pod Academy as a whole looks interesting, especially since I'm always looking for interesting listening for the 8-hour drive between Tucson and Long Beach.)

Subject: RE: A.L. Lloyd biography - help needed
From: GUEST,Dave Arthur

Having just read through the letters in this thread I am writing to thank all of you for your interest in, and support for, my Bert Lloyd biography - oh, and patience! It's taken me many years of research, reading, listening and interviewing. Then as many years making some sense of all the material that I'd accumulated. EFDSS librarian, Malcolm Taylor's initial idea for an EFDSS 70,000-ish word biog soon outgrew its remit, and continued to grow until it ended up at over a quarter-of-a-million words, by which time we realized that it was too large for the EFDSS to handle alone. Thanks to the enthusiasm and foresight of Pluto's Ann Beech, and the remarkable response from folk enthusiasts around the world, Pluto Press decided to publish it. Then we had a year of going through the manuscript to try and cut it down to a more manageable size without losing the initial feel of the book. Eventually we managed to take out some 35,000 words (which was almost a book in its own right!). Then there was weeks and weeks of proof-reading, corrections, and creating a large bibliography, index and, of course the textual notes.
Not having realized what we'd let ourselves in for we had planned a book launch (the first one!), only to find that there was still a huge amount of work to do. But it was a great event .
Anyway, now it's all done and dusted, and all those patient people (and a couple of impatient ones) should by now (or very soon) will have the book that they ordered (and many paid for) at the first 'launch'.
The second, and final launch, is taking place at Cecil Sharp House on Thursday 31 May from 7.30. p.m. where I'll give a small chat and there will be music from myself and Rattle on the Stovepipe (songs I got from Bert given a Rattle interpretation), Frankie Armstrong (one of Bert's favourite singers), Martyn Wyndham-Read and Irish Bishop (Oz songs), Hylda Sims (of 1950s Skiffle Cellar fame) with her revived City Ramblers Skiffle Group, Tom Paley, John Foreman (The broadside King), Eddie Armer (harmonica wizard), and others..

The bar will be open, the books will be there, there will be good music covering all areas and time periods of Bert's life, and a chance to catch up with old friends (before we all snuff it). So if you can possibly make it, please come along, and have a chat and let me thank you personally. If you wish to sing, say or play, we'll try and find space and time for you.

I hope you find the book worth the wait.

There is a new Bert website at where over the next months and years I will be putting some of the material that didn't get into the book - letters, song lyrics, transcribed folk and tall-tales from Bert's repertoire, photos, articles and a Bert Q&A and general forum section, also an updated version of my Bert bibliography which originally appeared back in the 1986 collection 'Singer, Song and Scholar'.

Best wishes to you all - Dave

Dave

Got my copy recently having paid up front years ago! Worth the wait. Good work from dave it must have been a hard edit!

I grew up with the CPGB in the post war period and it was interesting to see the wide connections in Bert's compartmentalised life. He had a lot of contacts with working people who respected him but as was the case didn't write about their lives as much as the 'intellectuals' We will only glean more as their oral histories come out , often when retired, and then only patchily

Nowadays tweaking of songs and tunes is perfectly acceptable and we should be grateful for Sovay, Recruited Collier, Blackwaterside, Jack Orion, Tam Lin etc etc.

Now we have wider access to information people are less prone to claiming phony 'informants' and also romanticising their own biographies and experiences.

I look forward to reading my new purchase soon.
