Lyr Req: A Stripper in the Public Bar (M Wootton)

Subject: A Stripper In The Public Bar
From: GUEST,Topic 56

In 1975 when doing some recordings at my local folk club I left the tape recorder on while the floor singers were on. One of the singers sang a song which was commenting on the "moderisation of Pubs" at that time. The chorus was

Cos there's a stripper in the public bar, a monster fruit machine
There's chinsey chinsey paper on the wall
And I hear there going to get a telivision set
Oh it isn't like a public house at all

Anybody know the song title and who wrote it, I have asked around over the years but with no luck.

It was written by Miles Wootton of Brighton. I have sent you a PM with his email address.

... Oh! I can't because you are not a member. I won't put Miles' email address here because spam web crawlers could get it but it is his first and second names together in lower case (at) btinternet.com

The corruption of pub culture takes many forms:

I heard that song a long time ago and I think it goes:

"There's a stripper in the public bar between the fruit machines
An insurgency poster on the wall
And I hear they're going to get a television set
Oh it isn't like a public house at all".

I would like to read/hear the rest of the lyrics again though. It's a good song.

In these days of equality surely there should be four rooms of strippers, for the four main sexual preferences...

And maybe another for sheep.

I suppose they might have been women. It was hard to tell in the dark.

Good Lordy, Max, my eyes are crossing at the mere thought!

I never realised how pretty the real Gypsy Rose Lee was...being raised on the Natalie Wood version and never having looked into the real lady before this thread...Mudcat, eh? :0)

Vic Smith I tried your criptic e-mail address for miles but it just bounced back. I am now a member on Mudcat so if you want to e-mail it to me you may be able too. I take it you could not remember the title of the song.
Cheers

alanabit here is the words as I have them I have copied and pasted them from my file. It is a bit disjointed reproduction but I think you should be able to make them out

THERE'S A STRIPPER IN THE PUBLIC BAR
(Miles Wootton)

CHORUS: 'Cause there's a stripper in the public bar, a monster fruit machine,
There's chintzy-chintzy paper on the wall,
And I hear they're going to get a television set.
Oh, it isn't like a public house at all.

1. Now they used to brew the beer in barrels made of wood.
It made you drunk, and boy it tasted fine,
But the new stuff that is made tastes like fizzy lemonade.
Give me the good old brewing every time. CHORUS

2. Now once there was a dartboard where we went for double top,
And the rattle of the skittles could be heard,
But since the juke box came, no one plays the game,
And nobody can hear a bloody word. CHORUS

3. Now Mick and me's been coming here for twenty years or more,
And we'd hoped the pub would always stay the same.
The walls were rather bare, there were cobwebs everywhere,
But at least the barmaid always knew your name. CHORUS

4. Now there's chrome around the counter and there's plastic on the bar,
And everything is beautifully clean,
But the barmaid's had to go, so the beer is going to flow
Automatically dispensed by a machine. CHORUS

FINAL CHORUS; REPEAT LAST LINE OF CHORUS.

Adverts for farm workers were noted for their brevity. Words cost money.
Around 60 years ago the following could be found in the local weekly press:--

Ploughman wanted, wife to strip.

Tim Broadbent and Fiona Gibson performed that at the Alice Springs Folk Festival in 1985. Their show was broadcast on ABC Radio at the time. I don't think they mentioned the origin of the song however.

There's chinsey Chinsey paper on the wall

I'm not familiar with the song, but I suspect "chinsey" = chintzy

Also that "Know" at the start of V 3 should be "Now", as it is in the other verses...

Lizzie, thanks for those links -- they're great!

Yorkshire Yankee.
I know it should be chinzy I just wrote it down phonetically (and thats probably spelt wrong. Also Know is just a typo saw i had made a mistake when I printed the song off for my file but could not be bothered to change it.Guessed that alan abit would work it out.
I have also been it touch with Miles Wootton and he said he wrote the song and it was so long ago he coul;d not remember if he gave it a title. I had enclosed the words I had for him to correct any I had got wrong but he did not seem to find anything wrong. So I guess I will have to use my own title for it. He did however say feel free to sing it.

Hi Topic 56,

I understand... didn't mean to criticise. But I also thought that even though alanabit (and I, and many others) probably know the word chintzy, I wouldn't assume everyone does. Especially years from now, there could be folks looking at this thread who don't -- and just sing or pass on whatever they find here, no questions asked. There are words -- especially in older songs -- that aren't used much these days, and younger folks don't seem to be familiar with them. If they don't know the word -- and don't know how to spell it, it's gonna be almost impossible for them to look it up (if they bother to), so I thought it was worth mentioning... hope you don't mind.

No Offence taken in any way. Just wish I had a title for the song. I will probably use There's a Stripper in The Public Bar. That may get folks dashing there.
