Sounds interesting. What will be the best places for English tune sessions. There are loads of youngsters (under 40 ;-)) in the Sheffield area playing English Ceilidh, I suppose they are catered for somehow?

On the corner of Russell Street and Bowling Green Street/Green Lane almost opposite the Kelham Island Tavern. It's site up for sale as a potential car park. Flat site surrounded by railings.

Or some indoor camping

Or any floor to lay on

I am a singer, so I was heading for the singing sessions Friday & Sunday

I've PM'd MC if that's any help

We'll probably be there mid-afternoonish depending on traffic, finding the pub, highway robbery etc.

Are you camping or do you live too close to bother?

I do indeed live close. Long walk or a short tram ride. I shall probably go for the latter since I have walked once this week already. I shall assume gin o'clock as an early time then. I'll try and get there around five-ish.

There will be some disruption on trams but that will be in the town centre between the station and cricket inn road to fitzallan square /ponds forge where there is a replacement bus service. The trams from town centre to hillsborough will be running as usual. Acorn beers deffo on sale at Kelham Island Tavern, they usually do Barnsley Bitter Gorklova Stout and sometimes a special. Hillsborough has mainly their own Crown Beers (which are good)

An evening at the University Arms led by Jim, with Jacks Rake entertaining us with delightful tunes and supporting whoever asked with fiddle and accordion. Apart from drinking too much and staying too long (and losing my voice) I enjoyed myself and there was a nice bunch of people and things going on. I got to Fagan's, The Grapes and University Arms. Highlight (of several) for me was getting to play a few tunes and songs with Patrick Walker at The Grapes - I think he is a wonderful fiddler.

But enjoyed lots of other things - apart from the hailstorm.

Thanks to everyone who took part and helped with the organisation,it's been a mega weekend. Teggi's shanty session was wonderfull and packed. Sunday night at Hillsborough Hotel saw an appearance from Gordon Tyrall. Final lne was good too. Absolutly bleeding knackered but after a break we'll start planning for next year which will be the Friday 6th - Monday 9th April 2012. Already some additions planned Simon Heywood wants to run a 'Story-a-Round' and Pete Shaw want to run a 'Hiring Fair'

26 Apr 11 - 01:12 PM (#3142768)
Subject: RE: Sheffield Folk Session Festival Easter
From: Jack's Rake

The Sunday afternoon "folk club" was particularly pleasing for us, though not for the expected reasons. When 3pm arrived there was only one recognisable folk person there besides ourselves (We assumed everyone was at the Shanty Session or that you all think we're rubbish) and the rest of the drinkers and diners were eying us and our range of instruments with varying degrees of suspicion.

Since we had only half the band this was quite worrying because we were limited to about an hour and three quarters worth of repertoire in the absence of Paul & Rob so it looked like we'd have to fall back on ceilidh tunes or, worse, (because the body count would be likely to scare the regulars away) Mark's solo repertoire.

All fears were dispelled once we started and the "locals" clearly enjoyed the stuff we were doing. One bloke went off home to get his flute, another, Sam Johnson aged around 15 ish, went off to get his bagpipes and, suddenly, we were off the hook. As the afternoon progressed other performers arrived and the local people continued to enjoy.

As it panned out, we had spots from David Paskell (the aforementioned only other recognisable person when we arrived), Pete Smith, Paul Errington and his baritone ukulele, Rachel Curry on Flute and unaccompanied singing and young Sam Johnson and his lively piping with his younger sister doing a spot of dancing.

We did a few short, themed sets consisting of our usual numbers with a few never-before-played-in-a-gig-situation songs plus we were able to have a special set from Kate & Sarah doing their own, non-Jack's Rake songs.

All in all, a great afternoon in the end but made even better by the fact that a few unwary Hillsborough Hotel regulars were exposed to some folk music and enjoyed it.

Thanks to Jim for asking us along!

All i all things were fab and I hope Jacks Rake will be part of the Fest next year
