I've heard the version sung by Dolores Keane! Folky or not, just sublime.

I've often wondered why this is always sung by women despite the fact that it is written from a man's point of view.

I didn't know of that recording mrdux, nor even that JT had covered the song. So thanks, all.

I don't want to enter the shit-storm that accompanies any defining of what is or isn't folk, but as a fan of both JT and the song I am not surprised at liking it. Maybe one day I'll get to hear it live, I would like that even better.

In my opinion the best version is the original one sung by Lale Anderson in German and recorded in 1939.

Tabor's statement that Hans Leip (who wrote the original words during W.W. I) was Jewish astonished me. I can find no mention of it elsewhere, and I am skeptical.

Hans Leip Jewish?    Who knows where that absurd idea came from?

Singers seem to want to make their presentation as dramatic as possible, it seems, and don't let facts stand in the way of this.

Among uncounted other arguments Leip was not Jewish, in 1942 Hitler gave Leip the "Kriegsverdienstkreuz" Class 2, for his "steady promotion of the push to the East, since the start of the war". My guess is this is due to the popularity of "Lili Marlen", especially when broadcast from Belgrade.

He was in fact no supporter of Hitler--(though involved in none of the conspiracies against him--), but   there were quite a few non-supporters who were not Jewish.

Heard it and loved it, beautifully sung. It's Folk for me, if modern war songs are Folk then surely this being fromthe war years must be to

On Lili Marlene: I'm only 18 and this was one of the songs I learned when I had singing lessons. It's one of my favourite songs. Don't care if it's from a male perspective (I love singing songs from male perspectives anyway. One of my other favourite songs is "The Riff Song", from The Desert Song, which is also meant to be sung by men as a group number and basically says "We are the most awesome guerrillas ever! The French have NO chance!") This song, IMO, is one of the best songs about love during wartime.

BTW, I always assumed that L.M. was a camp follower, although not necessarily in the sense most people would think of when they hear the phrase, as well as the narrator's girlfriend. Maybe she followed the camp to be near him.
